OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy and safety of temporary pacing with an active fixation lead placed trough the internal jugular vein and/or subclavian vein.
METHODS: We analyzed a consecutive series of 25 out of 73 patients that had a pacemaker extraction and were pacing dependent requiring temporary pacing with an active fixation lead until the new pacemaker implant, from 2017 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: Gunshot wounds require surgeons to decide whether to remove or leave bullet fragments in the body. Surgeons also decide how to follow up with patients who have lead fragments retained in their body. Lead poisoning from gunshot wounds is unusual. Awareness of this rare but serious complication can guide the physician in making a prompt diagnosis. We present a case of a 30-year-old male who had a remote history of a gunshot wound in the right knee and presented with right knee pain. Plain film showed intrarticular invasion of the bullet fragments. He was also found to have microcytic anemia with high blood lead levels. Gout secondary to lead-induced nephropathy is a long-term complication of occupational lead exposure. We report a case of this now-rare condition. The patient was a 63-year-old man who had been a miner from 1950 to 1970. Thirty years after cessation of his exposure to lead, he experienced onset of inflammatory symmetric polyarthritis with joint deformities.
