INTRODUCTION: Although abortion care has been an established routine since decades in India, 8% of maternal mortality is attributed to unsafe abortion. Increased knowledge and improved attitudes among health care providers have a potential to reduce barriers to safe abortion care by reducing stigma and reluctance to provide abortion. Previous research has shown that medical students' attitudes can predict whether they will perform abortions. The objective of our study was to explore attitudes toward abortion among medical interns in Maharastra, India.

Abortion as allowed by law in Brazil is a right that is rarely enforced, due to the multiple barriers to access. Another troublesome issue related to the health system's organization is the difficulty in obtaining reliable and easily accessible records to back monitoring and evaluation of legally authorized abortion. The current study thus aimed to analyze the patient records of women that had undergone legal abortion in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, from 2013 to 2018 and to identify the procedure's prevalence in the Hospital Information System (SIH). The study analyzed on

Although men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV and other sexually transmissible infections, sexual health services for MSM in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) remain under-resourced and are poorly understood. A scoping review of literature on MSM sexual health in LMIC was conducted in order to identify key clinical services and gaps in knowledge. Three databases were searched, in addition to hand-reviewing key journals and bulletins, to identify literature with a focus on MSM sexual health. Key services related to providing care to MSM in LMIC that emerg

BACKGROUND: Abortion and its complications have always been associated with challenges such as the lack of awareness, high cost of receiving in-person services, lack of access to the skilled healthcare workers, distance from healthcare centers in remote areas, and cultural sensitivities. Therefore, the use of mobile health technology in post-abortion care has been suggested. This study aimed to investigate factors influencing the acceptance and use of mhealth technology in post-abortion care.
METHOD: A mixed-methods study was completed in 2023. Initially, a literature review was conducted. Th

BACKGROUND: Drug users and female sex workers are among the groups most vulnerable to HIV infection in Vietnam. To address the HIV epidemic within these communities, former drug users and sex workers established the first community-based organizations (CBOs) in 2009. The study provides a focused assessment of CBOs' expanding efforts to advocate for their members that identifies existing collaborations with Vietnamese government programs. This assessment explores the barriers to and facilitators of expansion in order to propose recommendations to improve the working relationship between CBOs an

Previous research has demonstrated that veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are at higher risk for aggression, hostility, and anger, potentially leading to problems with the law or disciplinary action while in the military. There have been calls for increased consideration of the unique aspects of the judicial system in legal matters with veterans involved. The bulk of the research so far has considered the link between PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and combat exposure, but little is known about the potential role of chronic pain and Military Sexual Trauma (MST) in a veter

Introduction: The high risk associated with bariatric procedures prompts an analysis of the civil liability of bariatric surgeons towards patients. This liability may arise from medical errors, lack of appropriate patient consent, or insufficient information about possible procedure outcomes. The high risk of postoperative complications, independent of physician errors, makes bariatrics a particularly significant field for considering the "no-fault" principle.Aim: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the need to introduce the "no-fault&qu

This exploratory study contributes to the sparse literature on sexually assaulted sex workers. We examined 462 sexual assault cases seen at an emergency department-based sexual assault service and reported to the police between 1993 and 1997. More than one fifth of victims were sex workers. We compared them to other victims on victim characteristics, assault characteristics, and medical-legal findings. Relative to other victims, sex workers were younger, had lower incomes, and were more likely to be heroin and/or cocaine users. They suffered a greater number of injuries and forensic samples co

This study examines how the criminalization of women's drug use during their reproductive years affects their access to reproductive healthcare, legal treatment, and psychosocial wellbeing. Using a qualitative research design, the study employed semi-structured interviews with women affected by drug-related criminalization, healthcare providers, legal professionals, and policy-related stakeholders in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, China. The findings reveal that criminalization functions as a major barrier to timely healthcare access by generating fear, stigma, and mistrust of formal instit

The COVID-19 pandemic has raised significant concerns for population mental health and the effective provision of mental health services in the light of increased demands and barriers to service delivery [1]. Particular attention is being directed toward the possible neuropsychiatric sequelae of both COVID-19 and of the stringent societal mitigation steps deployed by national governments, concerns that are informed by historical increases in the incidence of psychotic disorders following influenza pandemics [2]. However, so far there has been scant attention paid to other important areas of ps

AIMS AND METHOD: To explore existing knowledge on autism in medical education and early clinical training, examine the lived experiences of autistic doctors, review relevant National Health Service policies and legal frameworks, and propose a practical framework for improving inclusion. This study comprised a narrative review of the published literature on autism in medical education, foundation training and healthcare settings, supplemented by a positionality statement informed by the author's clinical experience.
RESULTS: Common barriers include the hidden curriculum of clinical placements,

In Zimbabwe, abortions are legally restricted and complications from unsafe abortions are a major public health concern. This study in 2012 explored women's and providers' perspectives in Zimbabwe on the acceptability of the use of misoprostol as a form of treatment for complications of abortion in post-abortion care. In-depth interviews were conducted with 115 participants at seven post-abortion care facilities. Participants included 73 women of reproductive age who received services for incomplete abortion and 42 providers, including physicians, nurses, midwives, general practitioners and ca

INTRODUCTION: There is a strong evidence base that the stigma, discrimination and criminalization affecting adolescent key populations (KPs) aged 10-17 is intensified due to domestic and international legal constructs that rely on law-enforcement-based interventions dependent upon arrest, pre-trial detention, incarceration and compulsory "rehabilitation" in institutional placement. While there exists evidence and rights-based technical guidelines for interventions among older cohorts, these guidelines have not yet been embraced by international public health actors for fear that international

IMPORTANCE: To facilitate access to mental health treatment for minors who are unwilling to involve parents or guardians in their care, states have enacted statutes granting minors the legal capacity to independently consent (ie, without parental/guardian consent) to mental health services. Understanding changes in these laws over time may facilitate research that assesses whether these laws increase access to care, and support legal and clinical interventions to advance minors' access to mental health care.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the adoption and amendment of minor consent laws for mental hea

BACKGROUND: Efforts to distribute naloxone have equipped more people with the ability to reverse opioid overdoses but people who use drugs are often reluctant to call 911 due to concerns for legal repercussions. Rural communities face unique challenges in reducing overdose deaths compared to urban communities, including limited access to harm reduction services as well as greater concerns about stigma and privacy.
METHODS: The Rural Opioid Initiative was funded in 2017 to better understand the health-related harms associated with the opioid crisis in rural US communities and consists of eight

UNLABELLED: POLICY POINTS: Workplace wellness programs that provide incentives for completing a health risk assessment are a form of participatory programs. There are legal and ethical concerns when employers assess penalties for not completing a health risk assessment, raising questions about the voluntariness of such a program. The Departments of Treasury, Labor, and Health and Human Services' 2013 regulations for participatory programs and employers' current practices conflict with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's prevailing interpretation of the Americans with Disabilities Act

Abortion was practiced in most cultures for millennia, but was often disapproved and banned. The 20th century witnessed a progressive conditional legalization, often with limitations for the duration of pregnancy. Legalizing abortion was driven by multiple factors, including a desire to limit population growth, the emergence of movements that promoted reproductive freedom, women's empowerment and control over their own bodies, and an increased awareness of the risks inherent in abortions carried out without proper medical care. Today, there is a definite trend towards safer and more efficient

In Dobbs v. Jackson, the Supreme Court found that 'the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion.' Rather, individual states must determine whether a right to abortion exists. Following Dobbs, state abortion laws have diverged significantly. This has generated confusion over what the law permits. Consequently, some pregnant women reportedly have not received timely treatment for life-threatening conditions. Clear guidance on abortion policy is essential, therefore, since continued confusion risks lives. Sweeping calls to improve patient access to abortion will not provide clear guidance

Objectives. To examine the abortion frequency among incarcerated people before Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization was decided. Methods. We used data from the 2020 Abortion Provider Census to examine the number and distribution of facilities that provided abortions to incarcerated patients. Results. Sixty-seven clinics across 25 states and the District of Columbia provided more than 300 abortions to incarcerated patients in 2020. Eleven of these clinics are in states that now have total or near-total abortion bans. Public Health Implications. People in jails and prisons face many struc
