Uterine leiomyosarcoma: a rare clinical entity.

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare aggressive malignant mesenchymal tumour, accounting for 1% of all uterine malignancies. It spreads rapidly through the intraperitoneal and haematogenous pathways. It is often diagnosed postoperatively following myomectomy, hysterectomy or supracervical hysterectomy for presumed benign disease. It has a predilection for perimenopausal women with a median age of 50 years. Individuals may describe symptoms of vaginal or abdominal pressure. Physical examination may reveal a large palpable pelvic mass, which may haemorrhage. Surgery remains the mainstay of treatment. Hyster…

Prostate Leiomyosarcoma: A Rare Misleading Tumor.

CASE REPORT: 73 year-old patient present with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and a low serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) diagnosed with a prostate leiomyosarcoma following a TURP. Afterwards, he was submitted to radical prostatectomy. A multimodal approach with radiotherapy was considered although death occurred less than three months after surgery. DISCUSSION: Prostate leiomyosarcoma is a rare aggressive tumour with misleading clinical features which may delay the diagnosis. The rarity of prostate sarcomas makes it very difficult to have prospective studies and appropriate clinical …

Primary parapharyngeal leiomyosarcoma: A case report.

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant soft-tissue tumor whose cells resemble smooth-muscle tissue. It has been reported to arise in different areas of the head and neck region. Primary leiomyosarcoma of the parapharyngeal space, however, is extremely rare, as only 4 cases have been previously reported to date. We describe the somewhat urgent case of a primary leiomyosarcoma of the right parapharyngeal space in a 30-year-old man. We also review the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges that clinicians face in managing this rare tumor.

Pulmonary artery leiomyosarcoma: A clinical dilemma.

Leiomyosarcomas are rare neoplasms of the smooth muscles. Primary pulmonary leiomyosarcomas, which constitute approximately 0.2%-0.5% of all primary lung malignancies, are extremely rare and highly lethal. They may originate from the smooth muscle cells of the bronchial wall, the blood vessels, or the pulmonary interstitium, and their rare occurrence, localization, and nonspecific clinical symptoms mean that correct diagnosis and proper management are often delayed. Here, we report a rapidly growing primary pulmonary leiomyosarcoma, which invaded the right atrium, vena cava superior, mediastin…

Extensively Metastasizing Leiomyosarcoma: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Uterine leiomyosarcoma (ULMS) is a rare malignancy of the female genital tract and carries an extremely poor 5-year survival rate. It is known to metastasize early and to distant sites owing to a high propensity for hematogeneous spread. Lung, peritoneum, liver, and bone are relatively common sites of metastasis. Patient age, tumor size, FIGO stage, and grade of the tumor are important criteria for predicting metastasis. The incidence of ULMS is increasing, probably due to the use of improved imaging techniques and as a result of cancer patients' prolonged life expectancy. An early well though…

Primary pulmonary leiomyosarcoma: A case report.

Primary pulmonary leiomyosarcoma (PPL) is an extremely rare malignant tumor. It has been revealed that PPL may originate from the smooth muscle of the pulmonary parenchyma, pulmonary arteries and bronchi. Patients with PPL may be asymptomatic or present with symptoms similar to those observed in other primary lung tumors. The present study reports the case of a 48-year-old man who presented with a lung mass and underwent a right upper-middle lobe bronchoscope tumor resection. The patient was subsequently diagnosed with PPL. Following the bronchoscopic tumor resection, chemotherapy was administ…

Recurrent uterine leiomyosarcoma: an atypical location.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a malignant tumor of smooth muscle cells and comprises 5-24% of all soft tissue sarcomas. Although the most frequent symptoms are vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain, the symptoms are generally associated with dimensions and localization of the tumor. The current study presents a case of uterine leiomyosarcoma that metastasized to the rectus abdominis muscle, which has only been previously reported in two cases in the literature. A 57-year-old multigravid patient presented with a palpable mass in her abdomen. The patient's past medical history revealed a hysterectomy pe…

Rare Endobronchial metastasis from uterine leiomyosarcoma.

Uterine sarcomas are rare and represent approximately 3.2% of all invasive uterine cancers. The annual incidence rate is less than two per 100,000 women. The median age at which uterine sarcoma diagnosed is 56 years. The most common histologic pattern is leiomyosarcoma (LMS) which originates from the myometrium or myometrial vessels. Uterine LMSs are aggressive tumors with high rates of recurrence. The most common mode of spread is hematogenous, with lymphatic spread being rare. Recurrences of up to 70% are reported in stage I and II disease with the site of recurrence being distal, most commo…

[Epithelioid bilateral ovarian leiomyosarcoma: a study].

Primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma is extremely rare and generally affects post menopausal women. It is usually unilateral and more than 10 cm in diameter. Its histogenesis is not clear its prognosis seems to be improved by radical surgery and adjuvant therapy. We report a case of a 54 year-old, nulliparous, post menopausal woman who had abdominal distention. Physical examination revealed a large pelvi-abdominal mass. The excision of tumor with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and hysterectomy was carried out. A diagnosis of bilateral ovarian epithelioid leiomyosarcoma was made on pathological exam…

Ovarian leiomyosarcoma: an autopsy case report.

Primary non-specific sarcoma of the ovary is extremely rare, and only 22 reported cases of pure leiomyosarcoma (LMS) are known to the authors. We present an autopsy case of a primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma in a 73-year-old woman. She had noticed an abdominal mass after difficulty in defecating for several months. The excision of tumor with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and hysterectomy was carried out. A diagnosis of pure leiomyosarcoma of the left ovary was made on pathological examination with immunohistochemistry. Adjuvant radio-chemotherapy was not given. At 18 months' follow up, abdomin…

[Two case reports of retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma].

Two cases of retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma are presented. The first case was in a 67-year-old female, whose chief complaint of right upper abdominal mass and dull pain. The tumor, 13 x 12 x 8 cm in size, developing in the retroperitoneum was removed with the right kidney and vena cava. The pathological diagnosis was reported as leiomyosarcoma. The second case was in a 62-year-old male, whose complaint was left abdominal swelling, also with general fatigue. A large tumor mass, invading over all of the left flank organs, was palpable by physical examinations, from which the mass was far beyond …

[Penile leiomyosarcoma. Ultrastructural study (author's transl)].

A case of leiomyosarcoma of the penis in a farmer aged 70 is described. The patient was treated by excision/biopsy, and six months later three little tumors recurred on the glans and prepuce. A wide local excision and direct suture was carried out. No troubles happened in the next eight months. The ultrastructural study confirmed the histogenesis showing: polymorphic cells, as well as clear and dark ones, reduction of intracytoplasmic myofilaments, anisocytosis and poikilokaryosis and wide infoldings of the nuclear membrane; very vascularized areas with confluent vesicles on the endothelial ce…

Leiomyosarcoma With Dedifferentiation Mimicking a Benign Neoplasm.

Superficial leiomyosarcoma is a rare soft tissue sarcoma that typically presents as a firm, painful nodule in adults older than 50 years. We report a unique case of a 35-year-old woman with a slow-growing, mobile, subcutaneous nodule on the upper arm, initially presumed to be a benign lesion, most likely an angiolipoma. After excisional biopsy, histopathologic evaluation revealed an intermediate-grade leiomyosarcoma with focal dedifferentiation, demonstrating an abrupt transition from well-differentiated leiomyosarcoma to a high-grade, immunophenotypically undifferentiated sarcoma. Immunohisto…

Case Report: Primary leiomyosarcoma of the breast.

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the breast is an extremely rare tumor originating from the mesenchymal tissue of the breast. The clinical data of a case of primary leiomyosarcoma of the breast admitted to our hospital on September 11, 2024 were analyzed. A 58-year-old woman had a right breast mass for a week. Physical examination revealed an irregular mass at approximately 2-3 points in the right upper quadrant of the breast. Laboratory tests showed normal results for the tumor marker CA153. Color Doppler ultrasound considered solid nodules (BI-RADS Class 4b). Modified radical mastectomy and tertiar…

A congenital periocular leiomyosarcoma in a dairy calf.

A mass was removed surgically from the right orbit of a 1-d-old Holstein calf. Grossly, the mass filled the rostral part of an enlarged orbi … and skeletal muscle actin. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry results confirmed a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma. To our knowledge, congenital periocular leiomyosarcoma has not been reported in cattle previously. This rare tumor could be included as a differential diagnosis in newborn calves with periocular masses.

Primary leiomyosarcoma of epididymis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcoma is a tumor that can develop in any organ that contains smooth muscles. Although leiomyosarcoma is common, its epididymal localization is quite rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 79-year-old male Chinese Han patient presented with mild pain in the right groin and scrotum for 3 years concomitant with right scrotal swelling. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging of the scrotum showed a irregular and heterogeneous mass that was extratesticular. Right high orchiectomy was performed, and pathological examination of the resected specimen confirmed the diagnosis of leiomyo…
