On the model of transplanted leukemia p-388, cytophotometry has shown that tumors' impact on the body includes two stages: direct affection of the target organ, indirect affection through changes in functional relations with cell populations of other organs due to the impact of transformed cells of the damaged target organ. Moreover, the progress of tumor growth alters functional relations between the organs.

T- and B-cell distribution in thymus, spleen, and lymph nodes has been investigated during chemical lymphomagenesis. N-nitrosobutylurea (0.04 g/100 ml) in drinking water was administered to 35-day-old male C57BL mice for a period of 60 days. The transplantable murine B-cell leukemia, BCL1, was examined by light and electron microscopy. The results show that the BCL1 cell closely resembles the prolymphocyte of human prolymphocytic leukemia (PLL). The spleen of animals transplanted with BCL1 is diffusely infiltrated by BCL1-prolymphocytes. Splenectomized animals given transplants of BCL1 develop a lymphomalike disease with less leukemia and bone marrow involvement than the nonsplenectomized transplant recipients. Ultrastructural features of the BCL1 cell are identical in the splenectomized and nonsplenectomized animals.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Normal B cells that have failed to productively rearrange immunoglobulin V region genes encoding a functional B-cell receptor (BCR) are destined to die. Likewise, the majority of B-cell malignancies remain dependent on functional BCR signaling, whereas in some subtypes BCR expression is missing and, apparently, counterselected. Here, we summarize the recent experimental evidence for the importance of BCR signaling and clinical concepts to target the BCR pathway in B-cell leukemia and lymphoma.

We investigated the significance of milky spots for malignant cells in peritoneal dissemination using three mouse carcinomatous peritonitis models. The cytotoxicity of 2 rifamycin derivatives, rifazone-82 and rifampicin, on mouse ascites cells was studied, using the [125I]iododeoxyuridine (IUDR) method of labeling the tumor cells. This technique allows a distinction to be made between a cytocidal and cytostatic effect. The 2 drugs exerted a cytocidal effect against 2 non-leukemic cell lines, but had no effect against 3 leukemic lines.

Mumps virus replication was examined in various culture cells derived from mice. Eight of 16 lymphoid cell lines and 4 of 13 non-lymphoid cell lines supported the replication of Vero cell-adapted Enders strain (EY) of mumps virus. EY strain replicated more efficiently in lymphoid cell lines than in non-lymphoid ones. T cell preference, however, was not observed in this study.
