INTRODUCTION: A girl presented with achondroplasia manifested as mild knee pain associated with stiffness of her back. A skeletal survey showed enchondroma-like metaphyseal dysplasia and ossification of the spinal ligaments. Magnetic resonance imaging of the spine further clarified the pathological composites.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old girl presented with the classical phenotypic features of achondroplasia. Radiographic documentation showed the co-existence of metaphyseal enchondromatosis and development of spinal bony ankylosis. Magnetic resonance imaging showed extensive ossification

UNLABELLED: Lumbar intrathecal ligaments have recently been demonstrated to randomly bind dorsal nerve roots to the dura within the lumbar vertebral column. Lengthening of the vertebral column and associated lumbar back pain experienced by astronauts is common in microgravity. This study was designed to investigate the relationship of lumbar intrathecal ligaments in spinal lengthening as a possible mechanism for back pain.
METHODS: A two-part study was designed using 36 vertebral columns from embalmed cadavers. There were 12 vertebral columns studied in mid-sagittal section to demonstrate the

The ligamentous structures of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) and their attachments were examined anatomically and histologically using fresh and embalmed cadavers. The TFCC was observed to have a three-dimensional structure consisting of three palmar ligaments--the short radiolunate (SRL), ulnolunate (UL), and ulnotriquetral (UT) ligaments. In addition, the attachment site of the ulnocarpal ligament (UC), which had been previously unknown, was identified. The dorsal components of the TFCC have been previously reported to consist solely of the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) subsheat

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The ligaments consist of collagen bands intermingled with elastic fibers that support hundreds of pounds of stress per square inch. In the spine the basic functional unit comprises vertebrae, intervertebral disc and ligament tissues. The interspinous ligaments with the function of limiting the spine flexion are exposed to a traumatic and degenerative process that promotes pain or instability. It has been shown that aging induces structural changes to capsular, fascial and ligamentous structures, mainly to the elastic and collagen fibers. However, the relative changes with a

The integrity of the ligamentous network of the wrist is critical, as disruption of this network may result in carpal instability and pain. The extrinsic (radiocarpal) and intrinsic (intercarpal) ligaments that maintain carpal stability can be evaluated with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The major extrinsic ligaments are the radioscaphocapitate, radiolunotriquetral, short radiolunate, and dorsal radiocarpal ligaments. The scapholunate and lunotriquetral ligaments are the most important intrinsic ligaments and the primary wrist stabilizers. The most common causes of carpal instability are un

Thirteen patients with clinically diagnosed sprained ankles underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Five of these cases are presented to illustrate the potential of MR imaging to enable identification of both primary and associated ligament injury sites, grading of the severity of the injuries, and visualization of the associated findings of tendon sheath and joint effusion. The appropriate combination of foot position and imaging plane is essential to achieve full-length visualization of each ligament. Two patients demonstrated findings compatible with total gross disruption of the anterio

The palmar radiocarpal ligaments were studied with use of fifty-four dissected adult cadaver wrists and serial sections on twenty-three wrists from fetuses ranging in size from 23 to 230 millimeters crown-rump length. Three palmar radiocarpal ligaments were clearly identified: the radioscaphocapitate, long radiolunate, and short radiolunate ligaments. The radioscaphocapitate ligament originates from the radial styloid process and inserts into the radial aspect of the waist of the scaphoid, hemicircumferentially around the distal pole of the scaphoid and interdigitates with fibers from the palm

Arthrography was performed in 105 cases with freshly sprained ankles and signs of rupture of the anterior talofibular ligament. They were subsequently operated upon. The arthrographic films were examined retrospectively to assess the value of different criteria for the differential diagnosis between rupture of the anterior talofibular ligament and combined rupture of this and the calcaneofibular ligament. The diagnostic value of arthrography was found to be high in isolated rupture of the anterior talofibular ligament, and is acceptable in the combined ruptures.

Duplicate thumb is a common congenital difference with complex management. Surgical treatment includes reconstruction of the collateral ligaments to optimise future function and cosmesis. We present the use of the "U-ligament" to further refine collateral ligament reconstruction. We have found it to be a simple and reliable technique.

OBJECTIVE A fibrous structure located dorsal to the dura at the posterior craniocervical junction stretches horizontally between the bilateral occipital condyles and the upper borders of the C-1 laminae. Partially covered by the occipital bone, this structure is always encountered when the bone is removed from the foramen magnum rim during approaches to the posterior cranial fossa. Although known to surgeons, this structure has not been defined, studied, or named. The most appropriate name for this structure is "the suboccipital ligament," and a detailed rationale for this name is provided. ME

BACKGROUND: Pediatric knee ligaments undergo substantial morphologic change throughout growth and development, yet normative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based data across all 4 major knee ligaments remain limited. The aim of this study was to characterize developmental changes in the morphology of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in pediatric patients using MRI-based measurements of length, width, area, and volume.
METHODS: Knee MRI examinations performed between 2015 and 2025

OBJECTIVES: Facial retaining ligaments (RLs) are well-characterized for their role in soft-tissue support and in rhytidectomy. This study investigates whether RLs also act as anatomical barriers that influence the spread of basal cell carcinoma (BCC). We hypothesized that the dermal insertion of RLs impedes the dermal spread pattern of BCCs, specifically causing them to grow along the RL.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 163 patients who underwent Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) for BCC. Post-MMS defects were used as a proxy for the BCC size and shape. The defects were ca

BACKGROUND: Injury to both cruciate ligaments and both posterior meniscus roots occurs in multiligamentous knee injuries; nonetheless, osseous avulsion-type injuries of these structures are rare. This study outlines the surgical technique for anatomically repairing these structures while preserving the surrounding cartilage fragments.
INDICATIONS: Distal osseous avulsions of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial and/or lateral meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRT and LMPRT).
TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION: Arthroscopic primary repair of the ACL, PCL, MMPRT, a

The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) consists of an articular surface and a large posterior ligamentous region, both essential to its function. However, the detailed histological structure of the posterior ligaments, including enthesis characteristics, is not well understood, which obscures our understanding of SIJ-associated pain. This study aimed to determine their histological features and potential contribution to pain generation. The SIJ-related ligaments, including the ligament-bone attachment sites (the sacrotuberous ligament [STL]: the sacrum site and the ischial tuberosity site, the sacrospinou
