Congenital Microphthalmia, Anophthalmia and Coloboma among Live Births in Denmark.

PURPOSE: This study aims to quantify the occurrence of the congenital eye malformations anophthalmia (AO), microphthalmia (MO) and coloboma among liveborn infants in Denmark, and to estimate the rate of chromosomal abnormalities in this group of patients. METHODS: A cohort of patients born in 1995-2012 with diagnoses of MO/AO or coloboma was identified from the Danish National Patient Registry (DNPR), and their ocular and extra-ocular diagnoses were reviewed. In order to assess the occurrence of chromosomal abnormalities in the cohort, the data were cross-referenced with the Danish Cytogeneti

Maximum number of live births per donor in artificial insemination.

BACKGROUND: The maximal number of live births (k) per donor was usually determined by cultural and social perspective. It was rarely decided on the basis of scientific evidence or discussed from mathematical or probabilistic viewpoint. METHODS AND RESULTS: To recommend a value for k, we propose three criteria to evaluate its impact on consanguinity and disease incidence due to artificial insemination by donor (AID). The first approach considers the optimization of k under the criterion of fixed tolerable number of consanguineous mating due to AID. The second approach optimizes k under fixed a

Are women with recent live births aware of the benefits of folic acid?

Each year, approximately 4,000 pregnancies result in spina bifida or anencephaly, serious and often fatal conditions for the newborn. The B vitamin folic acid can reduce the incidence of these conditions by 50%-70%. To examine folic acid awareness among women who had recently delivered a live-born infant, CDC analyzed Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) data for 1995-1998. The question used to measure awareness was, "Have you ever heard or read that taking the vitamin folic acid can help prevent some birth defects?" During the study period, overall folic acid awareness increase

[Incidence of congenital hip dislocation in 40,243 live births (I)].

During the period between 1981 to 1985, 40,243 children have been born. Among these children, 1,747 suffered from dysplasia, subluxation or dislocation of the hip. In this paper the following parameters are examined: frequency, sex, the hip affected and the order of birth. Dislocation of the hip is more frequent in females with a ratio of 5.3 to 1. The hip more frequently affected is the left. Fifty percent of the children affected are first-born. In this study we want to emphasize the importance of a thorough explanation of the newborn, due to the frequency of the affection and especially its

[Incidence of congenital hip dislocation in 40,243 live births (II)].

We study 1,747 children who presented luxating hip disease evaluating the following parameters: a) Frequency of breach presentation. b) Weight at birth. c) Inheritance. It was observed that out of 1,747 children affected, 159 were by breach presentation, representing 9.10%. With regard to weight, it seems that under-weight babies are more affected than those of average weight. Lastly, we observed greater incidence in patients with a family history of hip dysplasia.

The association between mountaintop mining and birth defects among live births in central Appalachia, 1996-2003.

Birth defects are examined in mountaintop coal mining areas compared to other coal mining areas and non-mining areas of central Appalachia. The study hypothesis is that higher birth-defect rates are present in mountaintop mining areas. National Center for Health Statistics natality files were used to analyze 1996-2003 live births in four Central Appalachian states (N=1,889,071). Poisson regression models that control for covariates compare birth defect prevalence rates associated with maternal residence in county mining type: mountaintop mining areas, other mining areas, or non-mining areas. Predicting live birth, preterm delivery, and low birth weight in infants born from in vitro fertilisation: a prospective study of 144,018 treatment cycles.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which baseline couple characteristics affect the probability of live birth and adverse perinatal outcomes after assisted conception is unknown. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We utilised the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority database to examine the predictors of live birth in all in vitro fertilisation (IVF) cycles undertaken in the UK between 2003 and 2007 (n = 144,018). We examined the potential clinical utility of a validated model that pre-dated the introduction of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) as compared to a novel model. For those treatment cycles

Exploring determinants of cumulative live birth rates in IVF: insights from the EELI study in Lebanon.

BACKGROUND: Infertility affects a significant proportion of couples worldwide, yet data from low- and middle-income countries, including Lebanon, remain limited. Cumulative live birth rates (CLBR) are a key indicator of assisted reproductive technology (ART) success. This study aimed to assess the demographic and clinical predictors of CLBR among Lebanese patients undergoing ART, focusing on maternal age, oocyte yield, embryo transfer stage and strategy. METHODS: Anonymous medical record of 1,243 patients undergoing their first ART cycles at a fertility center in Beirut, Lebanon, between June

Successful Live Birth Following Treatment of Persistent Endometrial Dysbiosis and Recurrent Chronic Endometritis: A Case Report.

CASE: To study the cause of recurrent endometritis, which recurred after standard antibiotic therapy, we report the case of a 40-year-old woman with a history of recurrent pregnancy, preterm birth, and CE. The endometritis recurred following a standard antibiotic regimen. OUTCOME: Microbiome analysis via 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed persistent dysbiosis in both vaginal and endometrial samples despite antibiotic regimens. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) identified rare variants in TRPV3 and CD36, potentially associated with epithelial barrier dysfunction. Following an extended course of anti

High live birth rate among recipient couples who require a replacement lot of vitrified donor oocytes.

PURPOSE: To analyze characteristics and subsequent outcomes of patients who failed their first cycle using vitrified donor oocytes (no available blastocysts) and required a replacement lot to those who did not. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study at a multicenter assisted reproductive technology practice. Patients were included if no blastocysts were suitable for transfer after using a vitrified donor oocyte lot from a large, national donor oocyte consortium between 2018 and 2022. Patients were excluded if they opted out of using a replacement lot for the exposure group, or if they

Successful live birth in a woman with partial 17α-hydroxylase/17,20 lyase deficiency: a case report.

BACKGROUND: 17a-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase deficiency (17-OHD) is a rare form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia caused by mutations in the CYP17A1 gene, resulting in impaired activity of the corresponding enzymes. Its typical manifestations include hypertension, hypokalemia, and disorders of sexual development. Cases presenting with atypical clinical manifestations are exceedingly rare and affected individuals are susceptible to being overlooked or misdiagnosed. Additionally, successful pregnancies in such cases have rarely been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: We described a 28-year-old Chinese fem

Live Birth Rate After Transfer of a Single Euploid Blastocyst With and Without a Multinucleated Embryo.

BACKGROUND: Multinucleation, a deviation from typical embryonic development, is frequently observed during in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles. The relationship between multinucleation at the two-cell stage (2MN), chromosomal status, and live birth remains poorly defined. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether 2MN is associated with chromosomal status, determined by preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A), and live birth outcomes following single embryo transfer. METHODS: This prospective study, conducted from January 2023 to December 2023, included 152 patients un
