Mechanical properties of bio-cementation materials in pre-precipitation mixing process.

Urease-producing bacteria (UPB) could be used to cement loose sand particles. The UPB would produce free ammonia and carbon dioxide during the process of hydrolyzing urea, and part of the free ammonia would be discharged into the air to cause certain pollution to the atmospheric environment. The carbon dioxide could react with alkaline oxide to form carbonates and improved the strength in GGBS comparing with medium containing different concentrations of urea. By adding hydrogen phosphate ions and magnesium salts, free ammonia could be converted into environmentally friendly magnesium ammonium

Thrombotic microangiopathy: a role for magnesium?

Despite advances in more recent years, the pathophysiology and especially treatment modalities of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) largely remain enigmatic. Disruption of endothelial homeostasis plays an essential role in TMA. Considering the proven causal association between magnesium and both endothelial function and platelet aggregability, we speculate that a magnesium deficit could influence the course of TMA and the related haemolytic uraemic syndrome and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. A predisposition towards TMA is seen in many conditions with both extracellular and intracellular

Synthesis, Characterization, and Cellular Uptake of Magnesium Maltol and Ethylmaltol Complexes.

Magnesium deficiency and/or deficit (hypomagnesemia, <0.75 mmol/L in the blood) has become a recognized problem in healthcare and clinical settings. Concomitantly, supplementation has become recognized as the primary means of mitigating such deficiencies. Common magnesium supplements typically suffer from shortcomings: rapid dissociation and subsequent laxation (magnesium salts: e.g., magnesium chloride), poor water solubility (magnesium oxides and hydroxides), poor characterizability (magnesium chelates), and are/or use of non-natural ligands. To this end, there is a need for the development …

Magnesium sulfate for persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn.

BACKGROUND: Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) occurs in approximately 1.9 per 1000 newborns and may be more frequent in developing countries. There is strong evidence for the use of inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) and extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in the treatment of PPHN. However, many developing countries do not have access or the technical expertise required for these expensive therapies. Magnesium sulfate is a potent vasodilator and hence has the potential to reduce the high pulmonary arterial pressures associated with PPHN. If magnesium sulfate were found to

The role of magnesium as an adjuvant during general anaesthesia.

Magnesium sulphate is used extensively in the treatment of eclampsia, and is also used to treat refractory arrhythmias, asthma, myocardial ischaemia and acute respiratory failure. We studied the interaction between magnesium sulphate and the anaesthetic agents propofol, rocuronium bromide and fentanyl citrate. This randomised, double blind study was conducted in 50 patients. The magnesium group A (n = 25) received 30 mg x kg(-1) magnesium sulphate before induction of anaesthesia and 10 mg x kg(-1) continuously intra-operatively until the end of surgery. Group B (n = 25) received the same volum

Influence of low magnesium concentrations in the medium on the antioxidant system in cultured human arterial endothelial cells.

Using cultured human endothelial cells, we investigated the contribution of concentrations of magnesium to the antioxidant system and oxidative stress. Cells were cultured at decreasing magnesium levels (569, 380, 190 and 95 microM) for 72 h. We then measured the amount of released hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from the cells, the consumption of exogenous H2O2, the intracellular reduced glutathione (GSH) and the oxidized glutathione (GSSG) contents and the activities of glutathione reductase and catalase. Magnesium at a level of 949 microM was used as a control. The effect of magnesium deficiency o

The Role of Txnip in Mediating Low-Magnesium-Driven Endothelial Dysfunction.

Magnesium deficiency is associated with a greater risk of developing cardiovascular diseases since this cation is fundamental in regulating vascular function. This clinical evidence is sustained by in vitro studies showing that culturing endothelial cells in low concentrations of magnesium promotes the acquisition of a pro-oxidant and pro-inflammatory phenotype. Here, we show that the increase in reactive oxygen species in endothelial cells in low-magnesium-containing medium is due to the upregulation of the pro-oxidant protein thioredoxin interacting protein (TXNIP), with a consequent accumul

Protective effect of magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate on ethanol-induced testicular injuries in mice.

OBJECTIVE: Ethanol treatment induces an increase in oxidative stress. As licorice compounds are potent antioxidants, our aim was to examine whether magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate attenuated lipid peroxidation, the major end-point of oxidative damage resulting from ethanol administration. METHODS: Four groups(18 animals in each group) of male Kunming mice were used. The first group served as control and received 0.4 ml normal saline daily for 18 days orally. The second group of mice was given 56% ethanol at 16 ml/kg body weight per day for 18 days orally. The third group was given the same dose

Effect of dietary magnesium on the susceptibility of mice to infection by protozoan parasites of the Apicomplexa and Mastigophora phyla.

Severe magnesium deficiency protects mice against infections by Plasmodium Spp. and Babesia hylomysci which invade mature erythrocytes. By contrast severe magnesium deficiency does not protect against parasite infections by P. berghei which invades reticulocytes, Toxoplasma gondii which invades macrophages, and Trypanosoma brucei which lives free in blood. The results indicate that the infectious response depends on the severity of magnesium deficiency and on the parasite species. The decrease in red blood cell magnesium and increased oxidant stress are possible explanations for the protective

The role of minerals in ischaemic heart disease.

This review focuses on analysing existing research to offer a comprehensive understanding of the complex role minerals play in the pathophysiology of ischaemia. By examining changes in mineral levels, we aim to uncover the mechanisms by which these elements influence the onset and severity of ischaemic heart disease (IHD). Imbalances in key minerals (biologically active metal ions present in blood plasma and/or cells in dissolved form) such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese and copper have been closely associated with the onset and progression of IHD. Disrupted calcium and magnesium level

On the prevention and treatment of calcification disorders of old age.

From several investigations it is known that magnesium oxide or hydroxide therapy causes a considerable delay of kidney stone recurrence in man. Further, it is known that the mortality of populations due to cardiovascular disease in areas with hard drinking water containing more magnesium and having a higher Mg/Ca ratio than soft water, is considerably lower than in soft water areas. In the present study a physiological model for the homeostasis of calcium and phosphate is given. It is shown that and why a slight magnesium deficiency causes the pH of bone extracellular fluid to decrease at or …

A critical evaluation of anti-peroxidant effect of intravenous magnesium in acute aluminium phosphide poisoning.

The anti-peroxidant effect of intravenous magnesium was evaluated in 50 patients with acute aluminium phosphide poisoning. The patients were divided into two groups, one who received magnesium sulphate therapy (Group I) and the other who did not (Group II). The clinical and biochemical parameters in both groups were comparable. Finding of increased mean malonyl-di-aldehyde (MDA) levels in group I (3.18 +/- 0.93 micromol/L) and group II (3.15 +/- 0.78 mmol/L) combined with low blood levels of reduced glutathione (18.5 +/- 1.6 mg/dl in group I) and (17.8 +/- 1.4 mg/dl in group II) indicated oxid

Implications of magnesium deficiency in type 2 diabetes: a review.

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant cation in the body and plays an important physiological role in many of its functions. It plays a fundamental role as a cofactor in various enzymatic reactions involving energy metabolism. Magnesium is a cofactor of various enzymes in carbohydrate oxidation and plays an important role in glucose transporting mechanism of the cell membrane. It is also involved in insulin secretion, binding, and activity. Magnesium deficiency and hypomagnesemia can result from a wide variety of causes, including deficient magnesium intake, gastrointestinal, and renal losses.

AANA Journal course: update for nurse anesthetists--magnesium homeostasis and deficiency.

Magnesium is the second most abundant intracellular cation in the human body and serves as an obligate cofactor in approximately 300 essential enzymatic cellular reactions. Magnesium is crucial for the generation and use of adenosine triphosphate and is required for oxidative phosphorylation. A wide variety of internal and external stresses have been found to increase a person's requirement for dietary magnesium. Magnesium deficiency may develop during a variety of pathological states, or it may have an iatrogenic basis. Magnesium deficiency complicates the management of hypertension and cardi

Beneficial antithrombotic effects of the association of pharmacological oral magnesium therapy with aspirin in coronary heart disease patients.

The use of magnesium in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction remains controversial despite preliminary experimental evidence that magnesium plays a beneficial role as a regulator of thrombosis. The aim of our study was to determine whether oral magnesium treatment inhibits platelet-dependent thrombosis (PDT) in stable patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). In a randomized prospective, double-blind, cross-over and placebo controlled study, 42 patients with stable CAD (37 men, 5 women, mean age 68 +/- 9 years) on aspirin received either magnesium oxide tablets (800-1,200 mg/day) or…

Role of Magnesium Deficiency in Promoting Atherosclerosis, Endothelial Dysfunction, and Arterial Stiffening as Risk Factors for Hypertension.

Arterial hypertension is a disease with a complex pathogenesis. Despite considerable knowledge about this socially significant disease, the role of magnesium deficiency (MgD) as a risk factor is not fully understood. Magnesium is a natural calcium antagonist. It potentiates the production of local vasodilator mediators (prostacyclin and nitric oxide) and alters vascular responses to a variety of vasoactive substances (endothelin-1, angiotensin II, and catecholamines). MgD stimulates the production of aldosterone and potentiates vascular inflammatory response, while expression/activity of vario
