Heterogeneous iron oxide nanoparticles anchored on carbon nanotubes for high-performance lithium-ion storage and fenton-like oxidation.

In this work, heterogeneous hematite (Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles are jointly engineered on the external surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to construct a composite material (Fe2O3@Fe3O4/CNT). A simple one-step redox reaction is triggered in a hydrothermal reaction system containing functionalized CNT (FCNT) aqueous suspension and iron foils. Both Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles with controlled size are generated and well dispersed in the interconnected CNT framework. Controlled samples of Fe2O3@Fe3O4 and Fe3O4/CNT have also been prepared and used to investigate the s

Flash nanoprecipitation of magnetic particle imaging tracers with tunable performance.

Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a novel biomedical imaging modality where biocompatible magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) tracers produce a quantitative signal for imaging applications like pharmacokinetics studies, blood pooling, cell tracking, and more. Improvements to tracer performance are generally made through the alteration of the synthesis mechanism and post-synthesis surface modification tailored to different applications. However, relying on synthesis alone to modify MPI performance can be difficult and time consuming. This study utilized flash nanoprecipitation, a method of MNP encapsu

Magnetizable flow diverters can magnetically capture and retain endothelial cells to promote healing in rabbit arteries.

Flow diverters are effective endovascular devices used to treat intracranial aneurysms by facilitating aneurysm occlusion through endothelial growth across the aneurysm neck. Rapid endothelialization reduces complications such as thrombosis and stenosis. This technical note describes braided, magnetizable flow diverters made from stainless steel alloy 2205 (SS2205) wires designed to magnetically capture autologous blood outgrowth endothelial cells (BOECs) labeled with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs). Preclinical rabbit artery deployments demonstrated successful magnetic cap

Superparamagnetic Superparticles for Magnetic Hyperthermia Therapy: Overcoming the Particle Size Limit.

Iron oxide (e.g., Fe3O4 or γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles are promising candidates for a variety of biomedical applications ranging from magnetic hyperthermia therapy to drug delivery and biodetection due to their superparamagnetism, nontoxicity, and biodegradability. While particles of small size (below a critical size, ∼20 nm) display superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature, these particles tend to penetrate highly sensitive areas of the body such as the blood-brain barrier, leading to undesired effects. In addition, these particles possess a high probability of retention, which can lead to g

Biomineralization of magnetic nanoparticles in stem cells.

Iron is one of the most common metals in the human body, with an intrinsic metabolism including proteins involved in its transport, storage, and redox mechanisms. A less explored singularity is the presence of magnetic iron in the organism, especially in the brain. The capacity of human stem cells to biosynthesize magnetic nanoparticles was recently demonstrated, using iron released by the degradation of synthetic magnetic nanoparticles. To evidence a magnetic biomineralization in mammalian cells, it is required to address the biosynthesis of magnetic nanoparticles in cells supplied exclusivel

Dual-Responsive multifunctional "core-shell" magnetic nanoparticles promoting Fenton reaction for tumor ferroptosis therapy.

Ferroptosis is a newly found promising cell death pathway, which bypasses apoptosis and overcomes multidrug resistance of tumor. In this study, acid and redox dual-responsive multifunctional magnetic nanoparticles loading with Sorafenib (Sor), namely FMMHG/Sor, were prepared for tumor ferroptosis therapy. Fe3O4 nanoparticles as the core provided sufficient iron ion for ferroptosis and magnetic targeting. Mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (MON) was coated on the outside of Fe3O4 to form "core-shell" structure, which contained the disulfidebond with redox-responsive. MnO2 was dropped on the

Phosphocholine-decorated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles: defining the structure and probing in vivo applications.

Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs) are performing contrast agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). A functionalization strategy for SPIONs based on hydrophobic interactions is a versatile approach easily extendable to several kinds of inorganic nanoparticles and suitable for obtaining stable and biocompatible systems. Here we report on the original preparation of functionalized SPIONs with an 8 nm radius exploiting the hydrophobic interaction between a phosphocholine and an inner amphiphilic. With respect to other similarly functionalized SPIONs, characterized by the typi

Co-encapsulated fluorescent magnetic nanoparticles for potential applications in breast cancer therapy: Exploratory in vitro and in vivo studies.

This study describes, for the first time in the literature, a suitable approach to develop co-encapsulated magnetic nanoparticles based on fluorescent biotinylated N-palmitoyl chitosan, hydrophobic magnetite, Docetaxel and Verapamil. The multicomponent nanostructures were obtained using a two-step method: ultrasonication-induced self-assembly followed by ionic gelation. Structural composition was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy; the magnetic nanostructures displayed an average hydrodynamic diameter of 322.20 ± 2.50 nm, a positive surface charge (5.63 ± 0.16 mV), good magnetic saturation (13

Biocompatible capped iron oxide nanoparticles for Vibrio cholerae detection.

We report the studies relating to fabrication of an efficient immunosensor for Vibrio cholerae detection. Magnetite (iron oxide (Fe(3)O(4))) nanoparticles (NPs) have been synthesized by the co-precipitation method and capped by citric acid (CA). These NPs were electrophoretically deposited onto indium-tin-oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrate and used for immobilization of monoclonal antibodies against Vibrio cholerae (Ab) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) for Vibrio cholerae detection using an electrochemical technique. The structural and morphological studies of Fe(3)O(4) and CA-Fe(3)O(4)/ITO were

Magneto-Optical Properties of the Magnetite-Graphene Oxide Composites in Organic Solvents.

Graphene oxide (GO) aqueous solutions are known to form liquid crystals that can switch in electric fields. Magnetic fields as external stimuli are inefficient toward GO because of its diamagnetic properties, and GO is known to be insoluble in most of the organic solvents. In this study, composites of GO with oleate-protected magnetite nanoparticles were prepared as stable colloid solutions in the mixed isopropanol-chloroform solvents. The structure of the composite particles and the optical properties of their solutions can be controlled by the ratio of the mixing parent components. The as-pr

Overcoming the detection limit of GMR sensors using disk-shaped nanostructures.

Superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPNPs) and magnetoresistive (MR) detection have gained significant interest due to their potential in personalized medicine; therefore, they have been investigated for decades in medical diagnosis. However, they present certain limitations due to their superparamagnetic state. This study presents novel magnetic nanostructures (MNSs) with a specifically designed spin configuration to overcome these limitations. The MNSs were used to monitor infliximab, a reference anti-tumor necrosis factor biological drug employed in the treatment of inflammation, using specifi

Study on Thermal Damage in 3D Tumor During Magnetic Nanoparticle Hyperthermia Using Space-Time Fractional Dual Phase Lag Bioheat Model.

Magnetic nanoparticles for hyperthermic cancer treatment have gained significant attention in recent years. Magnetic hyperthermia ablates malignant cells by dissipating heat from magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) when subjected to an alternate magnetic field. Living tissues are highly non-homogeneous, and non-Fourier thermal behavior in biological tissue has been experimentally observed. In the present work, two important treatment parameters-the therapeutic temperature distribution and the degree of thermal damage to a three-dimensional, randomly shaped tumor encompassed by healthy tissue during

Quantifying platinum binding on protein-functionalized magnetic microparticles using single particle-ICP-TOF-MS.

This work describes an analytical procedure, single particle-inductively coupled plasma-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-TOF-MS), that was developed to determine the platinum binding efficiency of protein-coated magnetic microparticles. SP-ICP-TOF-MS is advantageous due to its ability to quasi-simultaneously detect all nuclides (7Li-242Pu), allowing for both platinum and iron (composition of magnetic microparticles) to be measured concurrently. This method subsequently allows for the differentiation between bound and unbound platinum. The 1 μm magnetic microparticles were fully charact

Using Hybrid PDI-Fe3O4 Nanoparticles for Capturing Aliphatic Alcohols: Halogen Bonding vs. Lone Pair-π Interactions.

In this study, Fe3O4 nanoparticles (FeNPs) decorated with halogenated perylene diimides (PDIs) have been used for capturing VOCs (volatile organic compounds) through noncovalent binding. Concretely, we have used tetrachlorinated/brominated PDIs as well as a nonhalogenated PDI as a reference system. On the other hand, methanol, ethanol, propanol, and butanol were used as VOCs. Experimental studies along with theoretical calculations (the BP86-D3/def2-TZVPP level of theory) pointed to two possible and likely competitive binding modes (lone pair-π through the π-acidic surface of the PDI and a hal

Magnetic Control of Protein Expression via Magneto-mechanical Actuation of ND-PEGylated Iron Oxide Nanocubes for Cell Therapy.

Engineered cells used as smart vehicles for delivery of secreted therapeutic proteins enable effective treatment of cancer and certain degenerative, autoimmune, and genetic disorders. However, current cell-based therapies use mostly invasive tools for tracking proteins and do not allow for controlled secretion of therapeutic proteins, which could result in unconstrained killing of surrounding healthy tissues or ineffective killing of host cancer cells. Regulating the expression of therapeutic proteins after success of therapy remains elusive. In this study, a noninvasive therapeutic approach m

Magnetic Nanoparticles Linked to Pyridinium Hydrotribromide Groups as Catalysts for Selective Oxidation of Alcohols and Protection of Alcohols.

In this research, a novel magnetic nanocatalyst based on iron oxide nanoparticles linked with pyridinium hydrotribromide (Fe3O4@PyHBr3) was synthesized in three steps. In the first step, 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) was reacted with 4-(bromomethyl)pyridine hydrobromide. In the second step, the product obtained in the first step was reacted with iron oxide nanoparticles. In the last step, a grinding reaction was carried out with KBr and HIO4 in a mortar. The Fe3O4@PyHBr3 nanocatalyst was characterized by FT-IR, CHN, XRD, SEM, TGA and VSM analysis. The magnetic nanocatalyst was used as

On-demand pulling-off of magnetic nanoparticles from biomaterial surfaces through implant-associated infectious biofilms for enhanced antibiotic efficacy.

Biomaterial-associated infections can occur any time after surgical implantation of biomaterial implants and limit their success rates. On-demand, antimicrobial release coatings have been designed, but in vivo release triggers uniquely relating with infection do not exist, while inadvertent leakage of antimicrobials can cause exhaustion of a coating prior to need. Here, we attach magnetic-nanoparticles to a biomaterial surface, that can be pulled-off in a magnetic field through an adhering, infectious biofilm. Magnetic-nanoparticles remained stably attached to a surface upon exposure to PBS fo

Current trends in chemical modifications of magnetic nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery in cancer chemotherapy.

Nowadays, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been rapidly investigated and attracted worldwide attention due to their great potential as mediators of heat for treating hyperthermia and their possibility to deliver drugs at specific locations, which can thereby limit systematic effects. Cancer therapy via MNPs proposes novel properties rather than normal methods such as almost zero side effects and a high-efficiency rate of effectiveness. The key aim of targeted drug delivery is to reduce side effects of the main cancer treatment that other usual chemotherapies will attend to the body, and thus
