Transcranial direct current stimulation over the sensory-motor regions inhibits gamma synchrony.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique able to induce plasticity phenomena. Although tDCS application has been spreading over a variety of neuroscience domains, the mechanisms by which the stimulation acts are largely unknown. We investigated tDCS effects on cortical gamma synchrony, which is a crucial player in cortical function. We performed a randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind study on healthy subjects, combining tDCS and magnetoencephalography. By driving brain activity via 40 Hz auditory stimulation during magnetoencephalography,…

Language laterality determined by MEG mapping with MR-FOCUSS.

Magnetoencephalography recordings were made on 27 patients with localization related epilepsy during two different language tasks involving semantic and phonological processing (verb generation and picture naming). These patients underwent the semi-invasive intracarotid amobarbital procedure (IAP), also referred to as the Wada test, to determine the language-dominant hemisphere. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) data were analyzed by MR-FOCUSS, a current density imaging technique. A laterality index (LI) was calculated from this solution to determine which hemisphere had more neural activation duri…

[Site and propagation of focal epileptic activity: multichannel MEG/EEG analysis].

Electrophysiological examinations provide the basis for a deeper pathophysiological understanding of focal epileptic activity. In addition to electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography from field measurements is now available for biomagnetic diagnosis. As magnetoencephalography (MEG) is basically better suited for the localization of focal epileptic activity than EEG, an increase in MEG measurements has taken place over the last years. In this study we discuss magnetic source localization which was combined with anatomical 3-D-MR-images and compared with the results of EEG-registration car…

Sensor-level MEG combined with machine learning yields robust classification of mild traumatic brain injury patients.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is challenging despite its high incidence, due to the unspecificity and variety of symptoms and the frequent lack of structural imaging findings. There is a need for reliable and simple-to-use diagnostic tools that would be feasible across sites and patient populations. METHODS: We evaluated linear machine learning (ML) methods' ability to separate mTBI patients from healthy controls, based on their sensor-level magnetoencephalographic (MEG) power spectra in the subacute phase (<2 months) after a head trauma. We recorded resting-state

Automaticity in the reading circuitry.

Skilled reading requires years of practice associating visual symbols with speech sounds. Over the course of the learning process, this association becomes effortless and automatic. Here we test whether automatic activation of spoken-language circuits in response to visual words is a hallmark of skilled reading. Magnetoencephalography was used to measure word-selective responses under multiple cognitive tasks (N = 42, 7-12 years of age). Even when attention was drawn away from the words by performing an attention-demanding fixation task, strong word-selective responses were found in a language…

Early Preferential Responses to Fear Stimuli in Human Right Dorsal Visual Stream--A Meg Study.

Emotional expressions of others are salient biological stimuli that automatically capture attention and prepare us for action. We investigated the early cortical dynamics of automatic visual discrimination of fearful body expressions by monitoring cortical activity using magnetoencephalography. We show that right parietal cortex distinguishes between fearful and neutral bodies as early as 80-ms after stimulus onset, providing the first evidence for a fast emotion-attention-action link through human dorsal visual stream.

Model-based cardiac field artefact correction for OP-MEG.

Each heartbeat creates an electro-magnetic field that propagates throughout the body and is superimposed on measured brain activity in electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings. Being several orders of magnitude larger than a typical evoked response in the brain, the Cardiac Field Artefact (CFA) is especially problematic in studies where cortical activity time locked to the cardiac cycle is of interest, such as in interoception research. In this work, we develop a model-based CFA correction method, which exploits the fact that the magnetic field propagates relati…

Eavesdropping on Tinnitus Using MEG: Lessons Learned and Future Perspectives.

Tinnitus has been widely investigated in order to draw conclusions about the underlying causes and altered neural activity in various brain regions. Existing studies have based their work on different tinnitus frameworks, ranging from a more local perspective on the auditory cortex to the inclusion of broader networks and various approaches towards tinnitus perception and distress. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) provides a powerful tool for efficiently investigating tinnitus and aberrant neural activity both spatially and temporally. However, results are inconclusive, and studies are rarely mapp…

Spatiotemporal stationarity of epileptic focal activity evaluated by analyzing magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data and the theoretical implications.

BACKGROUND: The emitted brain neuromagnetic activity was recorded from patients suffering from idiopathic epilepsy, using a Superconductive Quantum Interference Device (SQUID). This activity will be referred as magnetoencephalogram (MEG). METHODS: The MEG recording which were obtained from 32 equal spaced points of a rectangular 4 x 8 matrix were analysed using Fourier statistical analysis. Then, a two dimensional brain mapping technique was utilized in order to detect the possible existence and the accurate localization of epileptic foci. The applied technique was based on the construction o

Dystonia: lessons from brain mapping.

Functional neuroimaging with positron emission tomography, single photon emission computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and magnetoencephalography have provided powerful tools to elucidate anatomo-functional impairment underlying movement disorders such as dystonic movements. They have revealed that presymptomatic cerebral abnormalities may be a common feature in dystonia whatever the clinical status. Techniques using specific markers have recently focused on the type of receptors that may be dysactivated and on the kind of neurotransmitter that may be dysregulated in dystonia.

Magnetic source imaging localizes epileptogenic zone in children with tuberous sclerosis complex.

The authors assessed whether magnetoencephalography/magnetic source imaging (MEG/MSI) identified epileptogenic zones in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). In six TSC children with focal seizures, ictal video-EEG predicted the region of resection with 56% sensitivity, 80% specificity, and 77% accuracy (p = 0.02), whereas interictal MEG/MSI fared better (100%, 94%, and 95%, respectively; p < 0.0001). Interictal MEG/MSI seems to identify epileptogenic zones more accurately in children with TSC and focal intractable epilepsy.

Combining video telemetry and wearable MEG for naturalistic imaging.

Neuroimaging studies have typically relied on rigorously controlled experimental paradigms to probe cognition, in which movement is restricted, primitive, an afterthought or merely used to indicate a subject's choice. Whilst powerful, these paradigms do not often resemble how we behave in everyday life, so a new generation of ecologically valid experiments are being developed. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) measures neural activity by sensing extracranial magnetic fields. It has recently been transformed from a large, static imaging modality to a wearable method where participants can move freel…

Increased visual gamma power in schizoaffective bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies have identified alterations in gamma-band (30-80 Hz) cortical activity in schizophrenia and mood disorders, consistent with neural models of disturbed glutamate (and GABA) neuron influence over cortical pyramidal cells. Genetic evidence suggests specific deficits in GABA-A receptor function in schizoaffective bipolar disorder (SABP), a clinical syndrome with features of both bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. This study investigated gamma oscillations in this under-researched disorder. METHOD: MEG was used to measure…

Functional evaluation of arteriovenous malformations.

Detailed knowledge of the angioarchitecture of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) is necessary in determining the optimal timing and method of treatment of these challenging lesions. Many techniques are available for studying the functionality of surrounding cortical structures of AVMs. These include the use of positron emission tomography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, magnetoencephalography, and direct provocative testing of cortical function. The use of these methods to determine flow dynamics and tissue perfusion is also reviewed. These techniques are discussed in the present stud…

Training Working Memory in Childhood Enhances Coupling between Frontoparietal Control Network and Task-Related Regions.

UNLABELLED: Working memory is a capacity upon which many everyday tasks depend and which constrains a child's educational progress. We show that a child's working memory can be significantly enhanced by intensive computer-based training, relative to a placebo control intervention, in terms of both standardized assessments of working memory and performance on a working memory task performed in a magnetoencephalography scanner. Neurophysiologically, we identified significantly increased cross-frequency phase amplitude coupling in children who completed training. Following training, the coupling …

Magnetocephalography: a noninvasive alternative to the Wada procedure.

OBJECT: In this study the authors evaluated the sensitivity and selectivity of a noninvasive language mapping procedure based on magnetoencephalography (MEG), for determining hemispheric dominance for language functions. METHODS: Magnetic activation profiles of the brain were obtained from 100 surgical candidates (age range 8-56 years) with medically intractable seizure disorder by using a whole-head MEG system within the context of a word recognition task. The degree of language-specific activity was indexed according to the number of consecutive sources (modeled as single, moving current di…

Magnetic source imaging evidence of sex differences in cerebral lateralization in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: It has been postulated that schizophrenia represents a disorder of anomalous cerebral lateralization. This study is a replication of earlier preliminary findings using a multichannel neuromagnetometer, suggesting altered lateralization in schizophrenia in male subjects, with an extension of the findings to female subjects. METHODS: We used magnetoencephalography-based magnetic source imaging to estimate the intracranial location of the 100-millisecond latency auditory-evoked field component (M100) in both left and right hemispheres of 20 patients with paranoid schizophrenia and 20…

Focal cortical myoclonus in rolandic cortical dysplasia presenting as hemifacial twitching.

A 2-year-old girl presented with brief episodes of left hemifacial twitching. On ictal electroencephalography, repetitive focal spike discharges appeared at the right fronto-centro-temporal regions; these discharges preceded the onset of each twitch by 12 ms. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a linear abnormal signal intensity in the subcortical white matter at the right postcentral gyrus, where a cluster of dipole sources was detected by magnetoencephalography. These findings suggested that the patient had focal cortical myoclonus due to rolandic focal cortical dysplasia.

Intractable focal epilepsy contralateral to the side of facial atrophy in Parry-Romberg syndrome.

We report an unusual case of Parry-Romberg syndrome in which medically refractory focal epilepsy with ongoing epilepsia partialis continua (EPC) arose from the hemisphere contralateral to the side of facial atrophy. Unilateral cerebral involvement was confirmed by multi-modal brain imaging, as well as by electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). While in many cases of Parry-Romberg syndrome, the side of cerebral involvement is ipsilateral to that of the cutaneous lesion, these "discordant" exceptions imply that other yet undefined mechanisms may be responsible for the dist…
