[Mumps in Poland in 2002].

In 2002, 39,978 cases of mumps were reported in Poland. The incidence (104.6 per 100,000) was higher then in 2001 (43.3), which corresponds to a periodical increase of mumps incidence occurring in Poland every 3-4 years. This year's peak is much lower than the previous ones, which can be attributed to the growing vaccine coverage. Even though the mumps vaccine was not included into the national immunization program, the coverage in the 3-year old children reached in 2002 35.5%. Approximately 3.5% of cases were hospitalized (1400) and no mumps deaths were reported. Children 5-9 years old consti

The intent of students to vaccinate is influenced by cultural factors, peer network, and knowledge about vaccines.

Young adults are the future vaccine decision-makers as parents or health-care professionals. To understand their attitudes and behaviors tow … rceived in this age-group. Recent meningococcal vaccination campaigns and public discussions around mandatory vaccination in Italy may have influenced these results. We show that the intent to vaccinate was correlated with two main clusters of variables linked to culture (country, family, lifestyle), and to scholarship (knowledge, attitudes, data source) that together …

Beyond Rational Decision-Making: Modelling the Influence of Cognitive Biases on the Dynamics of Vaccination Coverage.

BACKGROUND: Theoretical studies predict that it is not possible to eradicate a disease under voluntary vaccination because of the emergence of non-vaccinating "free-riders" when vaccination coverage increases. A central tenet of this approach is that human behaviour follows an economic model of rational choice. Yet, empirical studies reveal that vaccination decisions do not necessarily maximize individual self-interest. Here we investigate the dynamics of vaccination coverage using an approach that dispenses with payoff maximization and assumes that risk perception results from the interaction

[Assessment of liberal physician's occupational risks management on the exposure to biological fluids].

INTRODUCTION: During their practice, liberal physicians might have a risk of viral exposure to biological fluids. That risk is well-known in … ys recapped needles and 40 % hadn't a complementary health cover. More than 82 % were up-to-date on mandatory vaccinations (hepatitis B and diphtheria-tetanus-poliomyelitis). In private practice, 97.6 % of physicians sort out blunt objects (prickly or sharp), which is quite satisfactory in comparison with only 60.5 % of them who sort out soft wastes and 44.6 % of blunt …

The efficacy of mouse-brain inactivated Nakayama strain Japanese encephalitis vaccine--results from 30 years experience in Taiwan.

An intensive mandatory vaccination program has been underway, combating Japanese encephalitis (JE) since 1968 in Taiwan. Long-term collection of immunization records has been developed from 1967 to 2000 in this study to retrospectively assess the efficacy of the mouse-brain inactivated Nakayama JE vaccine. The vaccine efficacy (VE) of completing at least two doses of the JE vaccine was 96.98%. Among 1 to 14-year-old children, the efficacy of completing 1, 2, and 3 doses of immunization was 85.59%, 91.07% and 98.51%, respectively. Furthermore, the long-term efficacy for a single dose vaccinated…

A second-generation anti TB vaccine is long overdue.

Mycobacterium bovis BCG vaccine significantly reduces the risk of tuberculosis by 50% and continues to be used to prevent tuberculosis around the world. However, it has been shown to be ineffective in some geographical regions. The existence of different BCG strains was described more than 60 years ago, these vary in their antigenic content but the genetic mutations in BCG strains have yet been shown to affect their protection. After the declaration of tuberculosis as a global emergency in 1993, current research attempts to develop a novel more-effective vaccine. Using new technologies, recomb

[Vaccines for adults: an update].

Vaccination practices in Germany are driven by scientific developments and a complex regulatory environment. Some important developments in 2019/20 are described here: Work-related vaccination recommendations for measles, rubella, and chickenpox have been streamlined and expanded. In addition, measles vaccination or documentation of immunity is now mandatory for employment at and attendance of many institutions, specifically including day care centers and schools. Owing to the shift of pneumococcal serotypes since the introduction of conjugate vaccines the US ACIP no longer recommends these fo

Meningococcal prophylaxis in neurological diseases treated with complement inhibitors: an expert consensus for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Inhibition of terminal complement activation is an effective therapeutic strategy for acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) and aquaporin-4 antibody-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), but it increases the risk of invasive meningococcal infections. Consequently, vaccination against meningococcal serogroups A, C, W, Y, and B is mandatory for all patients receiving complement inhibitors. This article provides expert consensus recommendations for managing meningococcal vaccination in patients with NMOSD and gMG receiving complement-inhib

Vaccination Coverage during Childhood and Adolescence among Undergraduate Health Science Students in Greece.

High rates of vaccination coverage in childhood represent one of the most important cost-effective tools of primary prevention and have substantially reduced the incidence of and mortality from vaccine-preventable diseases globally. Vaccination coverage of young people has not been well estimated in Greece. Anonymous self-completed questionnaires and the participants’ Child Health Booklet were used to estimate complete vaccination coverage of mandatory vaccinations against vaccine-preventable diseases of undergraduate students at the University of West Attica during the academic year 2020−2021…

Combining quantitative and qualitative approaches to determine viability of a potential Salmonella Typhimurium vaccination program in pigs in Belgium.

Vaccinating pigs against Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) might be a way to control ST infections at farm level and reduce human infections. Two main issues have to be addressed before such a mandatory vaccination program can be implemented: the effective reduction of attributable human incidence has to be demonstrated and all socio-economic barriers impacting the attitude and motivation of the pig sector have to be lifted. The present research used a quantitative microbial risk assessment model to estimate the effect of different hypothetical Salmonella spp. and ST mitigation strategies on the ann…

[Vaccination of newborns with high risk of tuberculosis in a French maternity hospital].

BACKGROUND: The early vaccination with BCG of children with a high risk of tuberculosis straight from the maternity hospital has been recommended since October 2005. However, this recommendation has not often been followed. Practitioners feared that the suspension of the mandatory character of the BCG vaccine dating from July 2007 would result in a decrease in vaccine coverage. The goal of this study was to assess a program for early vaccination with BCG in the maternity hospital for high-risk children. METHODS: Intradermal vaccination with BCG-SSI of high-risk newborns, as defined by the Con

[A rare case of myocarditis and pulmonary embolism after BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine].

In the clinical research arsenal, the COVID-19 vaccines are the strongest weapons against the most important worldwide sanitary crisis of the last centuries. Even if vaccine adverse events have mild clinical relevance, several thromboembolic events occurring after adenoviral recombinant vaccine administration have been reported. Cases of myocarditis and pericarditis after administration of mRNA vaccines have also recently been described. We report the case of a patient who suffered from two rare adverse events after BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine administration (Pfizer-BioNTech): acute myocarditis and

[Vaccination schedule, present and future].

The french calendar of vaccinations is devised by the General Directorate of Health (Technical Committee of Vaccinations, High Council of Hygiene) and is regularly updated. The 1990 calendar has recently been published. Primary combined immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis and pertussis has been brought forward from 3 to 2 months for better prevention of pertussis in young infants. BCG remains mandatory and can be administered in the first days of life without any risk of failure. Immunization against measles, mumps and rubella is performed between the ages of 12 and 15 mont

Residual Humoral Immunity Sustained Over Decades in a Cohort of Vaccinia-Vaccinated Individuals.

Serological testing of Singaporeans who received childhood smallpox vaccination found anti-vaccinia IgG binding and neutralizing activity indicating long-term humoral immunity. There was correlation between IgG and neutralizing titers indicating IgG could be used as a surrogate marker for humoral immunity. In 2019, Singapore experienced a case of imported monkeypox. As with smallpox, disease can be prevented through vaccination, which was mandatory for Singaporean infants until 1981. However, the degree of residual immunity in older vaccinated Singaporeans remains unknown. Sera from individual
