INTRODUCTION: A resected mandibular edentulous ridge resulting from an ameloblastoma and marginal mandibulectomy is a restorative challenge. To maintain oral hygiene, recurrent examinations, and for long-term maintenance, a removable dental prosthesis is preferred to an implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis.

Numbness of the lower lip, the skin of the chin, or the gingiva of the lower anterior teeth secondary to various dental diseases is a common manifestation that is largely underappreciated. The association of numb chin syndrome (NCS) with serious disease like metastatic malignancy and systemic conditions is frequent enough to warrant a search for these possible etiologies. In this paper we report a case of NCS that occurred secondary to malignant disease; we discuss our findings with special emphasis on metastatic malignancies leading to NCS, when the survival is only for a few months.

The authors report a case of mandibular condyle osteochondroma on a 33 years-old woman, similar to osteocartilaginous exostosis of the long bones. The lesion was revealed by a facial asymmetry and a change of the occlusion. The diagnosis was performed on the computed-tomography examination and histopathology. The removal of the lesion has conserved the condyle without recurrence after 20 months following-up. The authors remind the uncommonly location of osteochondroma in the facial skeleton and discuss the histogenesis of this lesion in its mandibular condyle site.

A case is presented of a massive osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle leading to marked facial asymmetry, painful mastication, disturbed occlusion and impaired hearing on the affected side. The diagnosis was confirmed by radiological and histological examination. A tentative treatment plan including surgery on both jaws was proposed but had to be modified because of the patient's reluctance to undergo any surgery on the maxilla.

A 16-year-old female complained of loosening of several teeth in the lower jaw. Radiography revealed bone resorption of the tooth sockets. The osteolytic process extended throughout the alveolar crest of the mandible and caused a complete loss of teeth within 2 years. Microscopic sections showed angiomatous tissue of Gorham-Stout-syndrome. Radiotherapy with 35 Gy controlled the mandibular osteolysis. Recurrent meningitis and osteolytic defects of the frontal skull base hint at an additional manifestation of the disease at this site.

The focal osteoporotic bone marrow defect is seldom considered preoperatively when a differential diagnosis is considered for focal, ill-defined radiolucent areas of the jaws. Clinicians should be aware of the existence of this abnormality and understand that it appears radiographically similar to other lesions, some of which are malignant; therefore a biopsy is necessary to establish a diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastoma is a benign neoplasm composed of epithelial tissue with invasive and infiltrative behavior at the local level and a high recurrence rate, with various histopathologic patterns and clinical forms. Approximately 85% of conventional ameloblastomas occur in the mandible, most often in the body, angle, and ascending ramus area.
