Evaluation of a systematic digitized training program on the effectivity of subgingival instrumentation with curettes and sonic scalers in vitro.

OBJECTIVES: Whereas the key role of subgingival instrumentation in periodontal therapy is well known, the influence of operators' experience/training with different devices on treatment results is yet uncertain. Therefore, we assessed untrained undergraduate students, working on manikins, as to how effectively they learn to use curettes (GRA) and sonic scalers (AIR); hypothesizing that AIR will result in higher relative cleaning efficacy (RCE) than GRA. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Before baseline evaluation (T0), 30 operators (9 males, 21 females) received a 2-h theoretical lesson for both instrume…

Effect of a head strap on the function of an eyelid warming compress.

PURPOSE: Warming eye masks, provide relief from symptoms of dry eye associated with meibomian gland disease along with other related eye conditions such as blepharitis, hordeolum and meibomian cysts. Certain eye mask designs use head straps to potentially improve mask retention on the face and heat transfer to the eyelids. Straps may increase pressure on the eye, the chance of tissue damage from direct heating, or pose a vision hazard for the user if they move around with the mask in place. This study investigated whether the presence of a strap clinically influences the performance of such ey

INTRODUCTION: Foreign body airway obstruction is a time-critical emergency. Traditional techniques such as back blows and abdominal thrusts are widely recommended yet may be ineffective in certain populations. Antichoking suction devices such as LifeVac and Dechoker have gained popularity in out-of-hospital settings, despite limited supporting evidence. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Studies involving humans or simulation models in which antichoking devices were used for forei

D-Cycloserine and performance under different states of anxiety in healthy volunteers.

RATIONALE: There is interest in the development of augmentation therapy in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Recent publications have shown that D-cycloserine can benefit exposure therapy in a group of acrophobic (height phobic) subjects and in patients with social anxiety disorder. These studies were based on the animal data suggesting that drugs acting to enhance glutamate function may be developed to accelerate the behavioural treatment of anxiety disorders. Perhaps by enhancing glutamate/N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor function, learning is thus enhanced. This study examines the effects of

A laboratory protocol for shoulder-head and head-ground dummy head accelerations during player high-speed rugby tackles.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of a novel laboratory testing protocol for dummy head biomechanics of the shoulder-head and subsequent head-ground impacts during rugby tackles. Currently, no research in tackles utilizes a real player as the tackler and considers the second impact when the opponent's head hits the ground. METHODS: A dummy was instrumented with an inertial measurement unit (IMU; 1,200 Hz) behind the right ear. Eleven rugby players with a shoulder placed IMU executed right shoulder high tackles to the left side of the dummy's head at tw

Assessment of blast lung injury risk using an advanced surrogate System: Evaluating chest protection efficacy in blast exposure scenarios.

When designing protective equipment for soldiers and law enforcement, blast threats are often overlooked, with the focus primarily on ballistic, stab, and fragment protection. However, primary blast injuries, which affect air-filled organs like the lungs and gastrointestinal tract, can be exacerbated by certain thoracic protective equipment. Using an anthropomorphic mannequin, BOPMAN (Blast OverPressure MANnequin), the effectiveness of a soft ballistic vest against blast threats of varying intensities was evaluated. The study involved detonations ranging from 85 g to 4 kg of C-4, with blast wa
