Drug use by men admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

OBJECTIVE: to assess risk related to drug use in men admitted to a psychiatric hospital and to identify associations with sociodemographic, socioeconomic variables, and risk conditions. METHOD: a cross-sectional study with the application of a screening test in 209 participants hospitalized for mental and behavioral disorders due to the use of psychoactive substances. Statistical analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and adjustment of a binary logistic regression model for moderate or high risk of drug use. The odds ratio measured the strength of association. RESULTS: high use

Postural syncope after marijuana: a transcranial Doppler study of the hemodynamics.

Twenty-nine volunteers participated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Cerebral blood velocity (CBV), pulse rate, blood pressure (BP), skin perfusion (SP) on forehead and plasma delta9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) levels were quantified during reclining and standing for 10 min before and after THC infusions and marijuana smoking. Both THC and marijuana induced postural dizziness, with 28% reporting severe symptoms. Intoxication and dizziness peaked immediately after drug. The severe dizziness group showed the most marked postural drop in CBV and BP and showed a drop in puls…

Impact of Prenatal Exposure to Smoking on Child Health.

Prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke remains common, through active smoking and/or passive environmental exposure, and is linked to adverse childhood outcomes. Not only have high-quality studies and meta-analyses demonstrated increased risks of prenatal as well as postnatal complications, but adverse child outcomes are well described. In utero exposure to tobacco smoke has been associated with congenital anomalies, infant and teenager overweight and obesity, and neuropsychiatric sequelae. In addition, certain childhood malignancies have been linked to paternal smoking during pregnancy. In this c

Modes of cannabis use, frequency of use, and cannabis use problems: A latent profile analysis of modes of cannabis use.

BACKGROUND: While studies have linked different modes of cannabis use (CU) with CU problems and consequences, they have typically focused on unique effects of individual modes. Few studies have examined more complex patterns (e.g., using multiple modes). Studies that have typically combine modes and frequency of use, making it impossible to determine whether differences between patterns of use result from differing modes or differing frequencies of use. METHODS: We used data from 338 sexual minority women and gender diverse individuals (18-25 years old) who used cannabis (populations at high

Admissions to substance use treatment facilities for cannabis use disorder, 2000-2017: Does legalization matter?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A growing number of US states have legalized marijuana use in the past decade. We examined if marijuana legalization is associated with increased marijuana-related admissions to substance use treatment facilities between 2000 and 2017. METHODS: Data from the Treatment Episode Data Set-Admissions were used to examine the relationship between marijuana-related admissions among adults aged ≥18 by year and legalization status (i.e., fully legalized, medical use only [partially legalized], and illegal) (N = 35,457,854). Using interaction analyses, we further examined whe

Brief original report: Does smoking status provide information relevant to screening for other substance use among US adults?

We assessed whether tobacco screening provides clinically meaningful information about other substance use, including alcohol and other drug use, potentially facilitating targeting of screening for substance use. Using data from the Veterans Aging Cohort Study survey sample (VACS; N = 7510), we calculated test performance characteristics of tobacco use screening results for identification of other substance use including sensitivity, specificity, positive-likelihood-ratio (+LR = [sensitivity/(1-specificity)]: increase in odds of substance use informed by a positive tobacco screen), and negativ

Co-use of tobacco and marijuana among young people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco and marijuana co-use among young people in the U.S. is a public health concern that deserves greater attention. This study addresses a significant gap in the literature by examining the prevalence and correlates of tobacco and marijuana co-use among young people experiencing homelessness. METHODS: The analytic sample consisted of 449 unaccompanied homeless youth (mean age = 22; 72% male) who had used any type of tobacco product in the past 30 days. Participants were recruited from 12 service sites and 13 street sites in Los Angeles County. RESULTS: Over 90% of young hom

Evaluating the effects of recreational drug use on ruptured cerebral arteriovenous malformation presentation and in-hospital outcomes: a national inpatient sample analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent literature highlights the adverse effects of recreational marijuana on cerebrovascular pathologies and outcomes. However, its impact on arteriovenous malformation (AVM) outcomes is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the differences in AVM outcomes between marijuana users and non-users, focusing primarily on the likelihood of presenting with rupture and secondly, on the effects of other drugs on in-hospital mortality and complications. METHODS: Adult patients diagnosed with cerebral AVMs from the National Inpatient Sample were included. Use of recreational drugs, including

Effects of the Federal Government's Move to Reschedule Cannabis: A Commentary.

The rescheduling of cannabis from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's current most restrictive (Schedule I) designation would be an important step for cannabis research and researchers. We are researchers who have experience with cannabis research in preclinical, clinical, and policy domains and who represent a range of social science disciplines (e.g., Psychology, History). In this commentary, we share our perspectives on the history, policies, challenges, and benefits of moving cannabis from the current Schedule I designation (similar to heroin) to the less restrictive Schedule III (s

The Mystery of Situational Syncope: A Case Series of Three Patients with Uncommon Histories.

HIGHLIGHTS: As syncope can be triggered by several less-studied situations, rare underlying causes of syncope, such as cough, marijuana smoking, and flight, should not be missed in clinical settings. UNLABELLED: Syncope, characterized by a transient loss of consciousness, is among the most common reasons for emergency department visits worldwide and can be categorized into reflex syncope, orthostatic hypotension, and cardiac syncope. Situational syncope, a subtype of reflex syncope, is less frequently investigated than other forms. Herein, we describe three patients who presented to the Synco…

Talcum induced pneumoconiosis following inhalation of adulterated marijuana, a case report.

BACKGROUND: Talcosis, a granulomatous inflammation of the lungs caused by inhalation of talcum dust, is a rare form of pneumoconiosis. Besides inhalative occupational exposure, intravenous abuse of adulterated drugs is a major cause for this condition. Minerals such as talcum (magnesium silicate) and sand (predominant silicon dioxide) are used to increase both volume and weight of illicit substances. In intravenous heroin-abuse, talcosis is a well-known complication. Here we describe a case of talcosis caused by inhalative abuse of adulterated marijuana. CLINICAL HISTORY: A 29-year old man pr

Cannabis Withdrawal Among Detained Adolescents: Exploring the Impact of Nicotine and Race.

Rates of marijuana use among detained youths are exceptionally high. Research suggests a cannabis withdrawal syndrome is valid and clinically significant; however, these studies have mostly been conducted in highly controlled laboratory settings with treatment-seeking, White adults. The present study analyzed archival data to explore the magnitude of cannabis withdrawal symptoms within a diverse sample of detained adolescents while controlling for tobacco use and investigating the impact of race on symptom reports. Adolescents recruited from a juvenile correctional facility (N=93) completed a

Period, age, and cohort effects on substance use among young Americans: a decade of change, 1976-86.

In an earlier article in this Journal, we reported analyses that differentiated among period, age, and cohort effects on substance use among American youth 18 to 24 years old, from the high school classes of 1976 to 1982 during the period of 1976 to 1982. The present analyses extend the classes and years to 1986, and the age range to 18-28. A cohort-sequential design is employed, based on annual surveys of nationally representative samples of high school seniors, plus annual follow-up surveys of each senior class. Twelve different classes of drugs, both licit and illicit, are examined. Several
