OBJECTIVE: To determine if there is muscle mass reduction in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) compared to the general population and to examine the relationship between skeletal muscle mass, quality of life (QOL), strength, and mobility in patients with AS.
METHODS: A total of 30 AS patients were enrolled in this study. Skeletal muscle mass was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis, and it was expressed as the skeletal muscle mass index (SMI). QOL was assessed using the EuroQOL (EQ-5D). To measure mobility, the modified Schöber test and chest expansion test were used. To measu

Arteriovenous haemangiomas within the chest are rare and uncommonly documented. After a 60-year-old woman with a history of smoking underwent a routine chest X-ray revealing a right apical mass, further investigations led to the discovery of a large extrapulmonary arteriovenous haemangioma in the superior mediastinum. Additionally, this case became complicated when the hemangioma was found to not only be compressing adjacent major arteries and veins, but also invading into the spinal canal and displacing the spinal cord. With multidisciplinary planning, the arteriovenous haemangioma was emboli

A 49-year-old woman presented with cough, and chest X-rays showed an abnormal shadow. Chest computed tomography showed an anterior mediastinal 40-mm mass with massive calcification. The patient underwent mediastinal tumor excision performed using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Pathological findings revealed the tumor to be a type B3 thymoma, with massive calcification occupying almost all of the thymoma. Due to high risk of recurrence, we performed completion thymectomy. Pathological findings revealed no remaining thymoma tissue in the residual thymus. Mediastinal tumor with entire calc

We report two cases of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP). The first appeared in a young, new mother as a large mass in the upper lobe of the left lung that caused compression of lung parenchyma without significant respiratory symptoms but with polyarticular paraneoplastic syndrome; the other was documented by an occasional chest x-ray in a man affected by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as a small peripheral mass 4 years before and no longer controlled. Both patients underwent surgical resection with quick and full recovery. SFTP is a benign, slow growing neoplasm that i

A 68-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of an abnormal shadow on a chest X-ray film. A chest CT scan and MRI demonstrated a cystic mass without solid lesions on the anterior mediastinum. The CT scan also showed that it was a well-defined and homogenous mass without contrast enhancement effect. 67Ga and 201T1 scintigrams showed no uptake in the mass. Needle aspiration cytology was performed, and there was no evidence of neoplasms. A thymic cyst was diagnosed, and then an operation was performed. At the operation, the cystic tumor was removed along with thymic tissues by a median

A 58-year-old man, who had undergone right hepatic lobectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma 6 years before, complained of hoarseness because of right recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis. Chest X-ray film showed a large mass shadow in the superior mediastinum. On chest CT scan the mass was considered to be swollen paratracheal lymph nodes. Percutaneous aspiration biopsy of the mass demonstrated malignant epithelial cells. It was suspected that the hepatocellular carcinoma solitarily metastasized to the paratracheal lymph nodes. Right thoracotomy was done and the mediastinal tumor was resected. Mi

Schwannoma is a rare tumor that arises from the Schwann cells, which are specialized, myelin-producing cells of the peripheral nerve sheaths. As anatomic logic would dictate, these masses commonly occur in the skull base, cerebellopontine angle, and posterior spinal roots. Of this already rare entity, rarer still are the pleural schwannomas, representing approximately 1-2% of thoracic tumors. These tumors commonly affect adults with a propensity for the third and sixth decades of life and a comparative male predilection. Schwannomas are benign, indolent, and follow an asymptomatic course. To date, the diagnosis of mediastinal teratoma and mediastinal masses relies on the use of chest X-ray and CT. Lung and thoracic ultrasound is becoming increasingly used in the diagnosis and follow-up of many lung and thoracic diseases. Here, we report the case of a mature cystic teratoma in which the performance of lung ultrasound allowed to speed up the diagnostic workup and to provide the indication for the execution of CT of the thorax allowing the diagnosis.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a novel harmful respiratory disease that has rapidly spread worldwide. At the end of 2019, COVID-19 emerged as a previously unknown respiratory disease in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. The world health organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic in the second week of March 2020. Simultaneous deep learning detection and classification of COVID-19 based on the full resolution of digital X-ray images is the key to efficiently assisting patients by enabling physicians to reach a fast and accurate diagnosis decision. In this paper, a simult

BACKGROUND: Some patients with thymoma present with a very large mass in the thoracic cavity. Although the most effective treatment for thymoma is surgical resection, it is difficult to perform because of the size of the tumor and the infiltration of tumor into the surrounding organs and vessels. We report a patient with a giant thymoma that was completely resected via a median sternotomy and left anterolateral thoracotomy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old woman presented with a mass in the left thoracic cavity that was incidentally found on a chest X-ray. Chest computed tomography revealed a

Malignant mesenchymoma is a soft-tissue tumor arising preferentially in the extremities and the retroperitoneum. We report a case of primary malignant mesenchymoma of the left side of the posterior mediastinum with local recurrence on both sides of the mediastinum. A 24-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of cough. Chest X-ray showed a giant mass in two-thirds of the left lung field, and computed tomography of the chest revealed a lobulated large mass with a fat-density area and a calcified spot in the mediastinum and left pleural space. Magnetic resonance of the chest demo

A middle childhood HIV-negative female patient presented with three episodes of haemoptysis. The chest X-ray demonstrated an oval-shaped, well-circumscribed left upper lobe homogenous opacification. She did not respond to tuberculosis treatment. A left upper lobectomy was performed for a solid mass in the lung, and hydatic disease was histologically confirmed. Calcification was found in the pulmonary lesion. Pulmonary hydatic cyst rarely presents as a solid lesion with calcifications and haemoptysis.

A 23-years-old female with no known previous contact with tuberculosis complained of right otorrhea. Treatment with antibiotics agent was resisted, and a tympanic perforation became two. Her tuberculin test was positive, but her chest X-ray showed no signs of lung tuberculosis. Posterior rhinoscopy revealed a granuloma in the epipharynx. Histological examination of a biopsy specimen revealed tuberculosis changes. Treatment with antituberculosis agents, SM.INH.RFP greatly reduced the mass and the tympanic perforation.

An asymptomatic 22-year-old female showed an enlarged mediastinal shadow in a chest X-ray mass screening. Computed tomogram indicated a tumor with a CT-number of 7-8 in her left anterior mediastinum, adjacent to the pericardium. With MRI the tumor showed a low signal intensity of T1 weighted images and a high signal intensity of T2 weighted images. Thoracotomy revealed that the tumor was yellow-whitish, and had a size of 7 x 7 x 1 cm. It was histologically composed of fatty tissue, smooth muscle, and vascular tissue, and was diagnosed as angiomyolipoma. Although angiomyolipomas are often found

Epipericardial fat necrosis (EFN), also known as pericardial or mediastinal fat necrosis, has until lately been considered an unusual cause of acute chest pain. Due to increased use of computed tomography (CT) and other imaging techniques, EFN is now believed to be an under-diagnosed cause of acute chest pain. We here present a patient with a short history of acute, left-sided pleuritic chest pain and dyspnoea, with total resolution of symptoms upon few days with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) treatment. Chest X-ray showed a paracardial opacity with ipsilateral pleural effusion,

A 68-year-old man was noted to have an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed a 100 mm mass in the lower right thoracic cavity. The mass was lobulated and compressed the surrounding lung tissue and diaphragm. Contrast-enhanced CT showed that the mass was heterogeneously enhanced and contained expanded blood vessels within it. The expanded vessels communicated with the pulmonary artery and vein via the diaphragmatic surface of the right lung. The mass was diagnosed as a solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) by CT-guided lung biopsy. We performed partial rese

Thymic cysts are rare lesions, accounting approximately for 1% of all mediastinal masses. We report a case of a 36-year old woman who presented preoperatively with a calcified mass shadow found on a routine chest radiograph X-ray. After further investigation with chest computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and tests for Myasthenia gravis, a benign mediastinal cyst was diagnosed and the patient underwent median sternotomy and complete surgical excision of the lesion. The histological examination described a multilocular thymic cyst. Thymic cysts are usually associated with

Thoracic cage is the site of development of various primary or metastatic tumors. An aneurysmal rib cyst is a benign tumor arising from the chest wall. Aneurysmal rib cyst is considered a rare surgical entity and its presence must be followed by removal for histology examination. We present here the case of an aneurysmal rib cyst to a young 33-year-old female. The tumor was presented as an expanding left anterior second rib mass during a self-breast examination. Chest x-ray showed a shadow on the left upper lung area and CT scan revealed a large multicystic mass in the anterolateral left 2nd r

A 72-year-old patient was admitted to our hospital because of painful tongue and loss of taste. A mediastinal mass on X-ray of the chest had been seen for 30 years, however no symptom was developed. Lichen planus was seen in his oral cavity. Hematological test showed decrease of all classes of immunoglobulin. CT and MRI of the chest showed a huge mediastinal mass. Needle biopsy was performed, giving rise to the diagnosis of thymoma with hypogammaglobulinemia (Good's syndrome). Intravenous immunoglobulin infusion, which is known to be effective to chronic diarrhea of this syndrome, improved his

We experienced a case of cervicomediastinal lipoma. The patient was a 3-year-old boy suffering from low-grade fever and dry cough. We detected an abnormal shadow on a chest X-ray film. Subsequent CT and MRI demonstrated a nonhomogeneous mass extending from the posterior mediastinum to the right side of the neck. We performed an operation for the mediastinal tumor under median sternotomy and right neck incision. The encapsulated tumor was 11 x 6 x 8 cm in size and was histologically diagnosed as myxolipoma. The nonhomogeneity of the tumor was due to myxomatous degeneration of the adipose tissue
