A 49-year-old woman was hospitalized for obstructive jaundice 4 years after extended mastectomy for lobular infiltrating carcinoma. After routine investigations that detected a malignant lesion of the pancreas head, the patient underwent pancreatoduodenectomy. The surgical specimen revealed unexpected breast carcinoma metastatic to the pancreas and duodenum wall. The woman is alive and free of disease at 10 years from the mastectomy and 6 years from the pancreatoduodenectomy. This experience confirms the validity of a surgical radical treatment for metastatic lesions in selected cases.

Foreign-body reaction to material optically resembling silicone gel was evident in an axillary lymph node of a patient eight years after subcutaneous mastectomy for fibrocystic disease and breast reconstruction with a silicone gel-filled prosthesis. The lymph nodes. was removed as a component of a radical mastectomy for adenocarcinoma and Paget's disease of the nipple that had developed in the residual breast tissue and preserved nipple. Silicone gel may "bleed" through a structurally intact prosthetic envelope and subsequently migrate to regional lymph nodes

BACKGROUND: Although breast reconstruction after bilateral mastectomies including a contralateral prophylactic mastectomy is known to have a higher overall complication profile, whether reconstructive complication rates differ between the therapeutic mastectomy and contralateral prophylactic mastectomy sides remains unclear.
METHODS: Women undergoing bilateral mastectomies with autologous or implant-based breast reconstruction for a unilateral breast cancer at a single institution were identified (2009 to 2019). Postoperative complications were stratified by laterality (therapeutic mastectomy

Breast metastasis is a rare pattern of distant metastasis from nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) following curative treatment. The present study reported two patients with breast metastasis from NPC and reviewed four such patients reported in the literature, including the analysis of clinical profiles, pathological diagnoses, treatment strategies and outcomes. The breast is a potential metastatic site for patients with NPC following curative treatment; however, thus far, only metachronous breast metastasis has been reported. Infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was identified in the breast met

BACKGROUND: Breast reconstruction (BR) after radical mastectomy is intended to recreate symmetrical natural-appearing breasts while preserving patient safety and quality of life.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the esthetic results and the complications of various BR methods after radical mastectomy.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Between August 2006 and March 2010, 36 women underwent BR after mastectomy in our institution. Their charts were reviewed retrospectively to evaluate the results and complications. We used immediate BR for Stage I and IIa breast carcinoma, and delayed BR for stage IIb and III breast ca

The records of 146 consecutive patients with mastectomy operations over a three year period were reviewed. Of these, ninety-three (63.6 per cent) had one or more complications secondary to surgery. There were 175 complications, of which complications, of which 107 (73.2 per cent) were wound-related. Seroma formation occurred most frequently but was of minor consequence. The incidence of flap necrosis was 19.1 per cent, with cellulitis or suppurative infection appearing in thirteen patients. Immediate postoperative edema of the arm was fairly rare (2.7 per cent) and appeared related to delayed

PURPOSE: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a life-threatening infection that involves spreading necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue and fascia that affects the extremities, abdominal wall, and perineum. Primary infection of the breast is a rare occurrence. Shah et al described the first case of primary breast NF and recommended radical "pseudotumor" excision and delayed skin closure months after resolution. Numerous other cases reported were successfully managed with different strategies. We aimed to summarize management options for primary breast NF through a systematic review of the literature.

Although surgery of the breast and axilla is generally well-tolerated by patients, the breast surgeon recognizes that complications can occur even when operating with experience on the lowest risk patients. The operative repertoire ranges from breast conserving surgery, mastectomy (including skin-sparing and nipple-sparing types), to modified radical mastectomy, with each procedure carrying a different expected surgical morbidity. Patients and families who are fully informed of potential complications before their operation describe greater trust in their surgeon and are better able to co-mana

Physiologic mastectomy can be used as a salvage procedure in cases of chronic suppurative mastitis, gangrenous mastitis, or chronic, severe mastitis associated with organisms liberating endotoxin or exotoxin. The surgical technique involves ligation of the major arterial blood supply (external pudendal artery) to the corresponding half of the mammary gland, which results in decreased systemic absorption of toxins and gland atrophy. The technique is performed with the cow standing, and it is relatively atraumatic. This procedure is a simple, yet effective alternative to radical mastectomy for u

INTRODUCTION: Women identified as high-risk for breast cancer may choose between close follow-up and radical mastectomy. Prophylactic mastectomy, as any other surgery, is associated with benefits and harms. The aim of this study was to assess the morbidity associated with prophylactic mastectomy and to evaluate the prevalence of occult cancers.
METHODS: All patients who underwent unilateral or bilateral prophylactic mastectomy between 2007 and 2017 in our institution were eligible for inclusion in this retrospective study. Medical history, type of surgery, occurrence of complication or reoper

BACKGROUND: In women with breast cancer for whom breast-conserving therapy (BCT) is not the best option, a nipple and areola complex-(NAC) sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction has been proposed as a good and safe alternative to conventional, more radical mastectomy. Surgeons hesitate to perform this operation for fear of recurrence of tumour in the NAC due to undetected nipple involvement (NI) of the tumour. In order to determine whether a NAC-sparing mastectomy is a viable option, the frequency and predictive factors of NI by the tumour were studied in the literature.
METHODS: A

Although physicians are aware of phantom limb pain, which can occur in up to 85% of patients who undergo amputation, and its potential effect on functional status, the presence of phantom pain after amputation of other body parts such as the breast and its effect on function may be less appreciated. We report the case of a 63-yr-old woman with multiple sclerosis who underwent a modified radical mastectomy for left intraductal breast carcinoma. After her mastectomy, she required a brief course of inpatient rehabilitation and was discharged from rehabilitation independent, with feeding, dressing

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) consists of extensive necrotic ulceration with bluish and purplish red margins. This disease is often associated with ulcerative colitis, systemic, hematologic or rheumatic diseases. However post-surgical idiopathic PG can occur. One post-mastectomy case is reported. PG can first be suspected on clinical appearance and the lack of a specific etiology. PG is a diagnosis of exclusion that is made only after other possibilities have been ruled out. The treatment is surgical excision and systemic corticosteroids.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about sexual function in patients with a previous breast cancer diagnosis. Treatments for breast cancer can cause structural and functional damage at different levels, affecting quality of life and emotional well-being of patients. This can produce pain, inhibition of sexual desire and difficulties in intimacy as a result of mastectomy, tumoral resection, radiation, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate sexual function in females with breast cancer remission.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted in patient

We describe here a female patient who presented with a breast mass and giant abdominal mass. Fine needle aspiration cytology of the breast mass and histological examination after modified radical mastectomy confirmed metaplastic carcinoma of the breast. The epithelial components were formed by infiltrating ductal carcinoma with poor differentiation, and the sarcomatous components were formed by fibrosarcoma and osteosarcoma. Histological examination of the abdominal mass confirmed ovarian teratoma. The patient underwent modified radical mastectomy of the right breast and laparoscopic excision

Cutaneous metastases from internal cancer are relatively uncommon in clinical practice, but they are very important to recognize. Metastases of skin may be a herald sign in the diagnosis of internal malignancy. Scalp metastasis from breast carcinoma is reported but it is rare. We describe a 42-year-old woman who presented with three foci of alopecia on her scalp resembling alopecia areata. She was a known case of breast carcinoma 10 years prior. Radical mastectomy and total chemotherapy was done 8 years prior. An incision biopsy of an alopecic patch was done revealing metastases of breast carc

We describe a patient with the previously unseen combination of Maffucci's and Stewart Treves syndrome who presented with an angiosarcoma of the hand. Maffucci's syndrome is characterized by the presence of multiple enchondroma and soft tissue hemangioma. The syndrome is a rare nonhereditary condition with a usual onset in childhood. Malignant transformations are a common feature of this syndrome. In 1948, Stewart and Treves first described six cases of lymphangiosarcoma after radical mastectomy. This syndrome is an unusual form of angiosarcoma occuring as a complication of lymphedema. Chronic

A prospective randomized study was performed in 22 institutions from July 1978, to evaluate the efficiency of long-term adjuvant chemotherapy with tegafur alone for primary breast cancer. Five hundred and eighty-seven eligible patients, classified into T1a, T2a, T3a, N0, N1a, N1b, and M0 were divided into two groups: Group A, radical mastectomy receiving no adjuvant chemotherapy; and Group B, radical mastectomy followed by 4 courses of adjuvant chemotherapy, each one consisting of daily administration of tegafur 600 mg p.o. for 8 weeks and 4 weeks rest. The current state of the art makes breast reconstruction possible in any patient who has undergone mastectomy, whether simple, modified radical, or radical. Indications for reconstruction are a strong desire on the part of the patient and a reasonable life expectancy. Methods of reconstruction include the simple placement of a breast prosthesis alone (submuscularly when possible) or in combination with advancement of upper abdominal skin or rotation flaps. Expander implants are useful in patients with limited skin and musculature. For the patient with serious muscle and skin deficits, more com
