A case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma arising primarily in the left maxillary sinus is described. The patient, a 39-year-old male, who had suffered from sinusitis for 20 years, began to have paresthesia or sharp pain of the left side of the face and toothaches of the left maxilla. At operation a white fibrous tumor developing extensively from the lateral wall to the upper and medial walls of the left maxillary sinus and into the ethmoidal sinus was noted. Following a gradual progression of dyspnea, he died approximately one year after the onset in spite of radiation therapy and anticancer c…

A case was reported in which a foreign body was identified in the maxillary sinus during the course of a radiologic dental examination. The foreign body proved to be a calculus. Analysis of the calculus revealed no foreign body responsible for the crystallization. The possibility of local formation of a calculus of the maxillary antrum was discussed.

Pneumocele of the maxillary sinus is a recently described disease, first noted in 1974. Three subsequent cases have been encountered. Pneumocele refers to an expansile cystic air-containing mass, occupying the entire maxillary sinus, and lined by the original attenuated mucous membrane. It is analogous to mucocele, but containing air rather than fluid content. Radiologic signs are diagnostic, and it is the purpose of this presentation to enumerate these radiologic findings.

A strategic surgical approach is necessary for patients who cannot undergo maxillary sinus augmentation due to a large perforation of the sinus membrane as a result of complex sinus septa. The technique includes partial cutting and removal of the sinus septum and graftless mucosal elevation of the concavity area. Six months after the procedure, bone growth was observed in the area where the septum had been partially removed. The sinus mucosa was slightly thicker because of scarring; consequently, maxillary sinus augmentation was safely achieved. This two-step procedure is effective for safe ma…

Silent SINUS SYNDROME is a clinical syndrome defined by unilateral maxillary sinus opacification with atelectasis of the uncinate process. Clinically, this disorder is characterized by enophthalmos and hypoglobus. The current case report illustrates dramatic bony remodeling of the maxillary sinus following maxillary antrostomy. Although the remodeling is noted in the posterior wall of the maxillary sinus, this demonstrates the dynamic nature of bone remodeling in silent sinus syndrome, which may obviate the need for surgical correction of enophthalmos and hypoglobus. Following maxillary antros…

Background: Restoration of the masticatory function in patients with edentulous posterior maxilla is often challenging due to the severe atrophy of the alveolar ridges and proximity of the maxillary sinus, resulting in insufficient bone quantity for implant-supported dentures.
Aim: The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes in Schneiderian membrane thickness after lateral sinus floor augmentation (LSFA) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
Material and methods: WLSFA procedures using different bone gr…
