In 2017-2018, the authors examined and operated on 35 patients aged 20 to 39 years (19 women, 16 men) with cystic maxillary sinusitis. The study included patients who were diagnosed with retention cyst of the maxillary sinus, located on the lower walls of the maxillary sinus and dealing with no more than 2/3 of the maxillary sinus volume, according to CT of the paranasal sinuses. The operation was performed using the following method: two punctures of the sinus were performed simultaneously in a typical place in the lower nasal passage - using a Kulikovsky needle and using a 2.8 mm trocar. The

PROBLEM: The concomitant appearance of an inverted papilloma and a fungus ball in unilateral maxillary sinus is rare. These disease entities may be difficult to distinguish before surgery.
METHODOLOGY: A male patient presented with the characteristic symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis. A preoperative sinus computed tomography scan revealed unilateral sinus opacification, hyperdense calcified spots, and bony erosion of the medial maxillary sinus wall.
RESULTS: During the operation, a cheesy, clay-like fungus ball was removed. In addition, a papillary appearance of the sinus mucosa led to the

INTRODUCTION: Ameloblastomas are rare head and neck tumors, and yet the most common odontogenic neoplasms. They account for 1% and 11% of all head and neck and odontogenic tumors respectively. Embryologically, they originate from remnants of odontogenic epithelium. Their aggressive, destructive nature, as well as their anticipated high rate of recurrence, even after en bloc resection, poses a surgical predicament.
PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 56 year-old Asian female with a multi-recurrent invasive ameloblastoma. Initially, the lesion was mandibular in location for which she underwent

OBJECTIVE: To show our experience in performing endoscopic-assisted maxillectomy (EAM), with the aim of facilitating delineation of tumour resection and improve the achievement of free tumour resection margins.
METHODS: Patients undergoing EAM between 2021 and 2024 were reviewed. During the endoscopic approach, the medial and lateral plates of the pterygoid were drilled, taking as reference the superior margin of the inferior turbinate.
RESULTS: Six patients underwent an EAM surgery. The maxillectomy was completed with an external transfacial approach in four patients and with a transoral ap

While computed tomography (CT) imaging is commonly used to evaluate canine nasal tumors, the ability to differentiate tumor types based on imaging features remains limited. This retrospective study examined dogs with confirmed nasal neoplasia to determine whether CT characteristics differ between epithelial and mesenchymal tumors. Cases from a single institution (2013-2022) were reviewed, and the frequency of CT features between epithelial and mesenchymal tumors was compared using Fisher's exact test. Also, CT features of less commonly reported nasal neoplasms, including squamous cell carcinom

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI), first described almost a century back, is of neural crest origin, locally aggressive, a rare biphasic neoplasm of infancy with a slightly higher male preponderance. In the last 100 years since the first description of MNTI, only around 500 cases have been described from 32 countries. We present a 7-month-old female child with 3 × 2 cm hard swelling in the oral cavity and right-side facial region for 3 months. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging scan revealed a hypodense lesion of size 2.5

Malignant ethmoid and maxillary sinus tumors frequently involve the orbit. Orbital involvement is an important prognostic predictor of recurrence-free, disease-specific, and overall survival. Most authors agree that orbital preservation as opposed to orbital exenteration or clearance does not result in significant differences in local recurrence or actuarial survival. The eye can be safely preserved in most patients with ethmoid or maxillary sinus cancer invading the orbital wall, including malignancies that invade the orbital soft tissues with penetration through the periorbita provided that

Human actinomycosis may pose a diagnostic problem at times and is often mistaken for a neoplasm. A thirty-five year old male was clinically diagnosed as a case of carcinoma of the right maxillary sinus on the basis of history, clinical presentation and radiologic findings. Tissue biopsy was negative for malignancy on three consecutive occasions. Microscopic examination showed bits of granulation tissue and fragments of filamentous structures. On microbiological examination, Actinomyces israelii was isolated and fungus culture was negative. Long term Penicillin treatment caused disappearance of

Leiomyosarcomas (LMSs) are rare malignant mesenchymal tumors which show smooth-muscle differentiation. Most LMSs involving the oral tissues primarily affect the maxillary sinus, the maxillary or mandibular bone. We present a case of LMS of the mandibular alveolar mucosa, arising in a 12-year-old male child from Ethiopia. A malignant spindle cell-like neoplasm was diagnosed on clinical and radiographic findings as well as on incisional biopsy. The tumor was resected with wide margins. The following histopathologic examination with additional immunohistochemical studies secured the diagnosis LMS

A 34-year-old Haflinger gelding presented with a unilateral, expansile, intranasal mass that regrew after partial excision. After euthanasia, a large pedunculated mass that originated from the left caudal maxillary sinus and obliterated the left nasal cavity was seen by radiological and macroscopic examination. Histopathology revealed a poorly cellular, expansile, well-vascularized neoplasm composed of a loosely arranged meshwork of spindle cells and collagen fibres. Spindle cells were immunopositive for alpha-smooth muscle actin and occasionally for vimentin, whereas endothelial cells immunol

An osteochondroma, when reported in the maxillofacial region, is a benign neoplasm that involves the skull base, maxillary sinus, zygomatic arch, or mandible. Most commonly, the osteochondroma occurs in the coronoid process and the condyle. One rare subtype of osteochondroma reported in the literature, termed Jacob disease, arises from the coronoid process and interferes with the zygomatic arch. This report describes a unique case of an isolated osteochondroma arising from the zygomatic arch and interfering with the coronoid process, which was treated through surgical excision by an intraoral

Myxoma is a slow growing, benign neoplasm, which pathogenesis still remains disputed. The lesion has well-defined borders but a true capsule is absent. Because of that myxoma can be locally invasive causing bone destruction. A change is mainly observed among persons between 20-30 years of age and is very uncommon in the pediatric population. Most myxomas are observed in myocardium, but rarely may also manifest in the head and neck region. In the paper we describe an unusual case of myxoma of maxillary sinus in a female infant. Diagnostic challenges, treatment, outcome, post-operative follow-up

Multiple myeloma is the most common plasma cell neoplasm, with abnormal clonal proliferation of B cells in bone marrow. Its staging is important for therapeutic management and prognosis. F-18 FDG PET/CT is of proven value in staging and posttherapeutic monitoring multiple myeloma. Through imaging integration, PET provides functional detection of high metabolic lesions whereas CT provides correlated anatomic localization. The authors present a case of multiple myeloma status post chemotherapy and stem cell transplant with diffuse osseous and extramedullary lesions evaluated by PET/CT. The extra

A sinus pneumocele is a rare entity caused by obstruction of a paranasal sinus ostium. It is characterised by dilation and expansion of the sinus, with subsequent bony erosion. The most probable mechanism is air trapping in the paranasal sinus, via a one-way valve mechanism. The case presented concerns a 68-year-old Caucasian man, with recurrent episodes of acute rhinosinusitis. Clinical examination and subsequent imaging of the face, revealed a large pneumocele of the right frontal sinus that significantly eroded the posterior sinus wall. A large mucocele of the right maxillary sinus was also
