Malondialdehyde levels and superoxide dismutase activity in experimental maxillary sinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: Acute maxillary sinusitis is one of the most common diseases in human. Reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs) produced also physiologically in the body, are normally neutralised by antioxidative enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD). Infection is one of the causes of increased ROMs production. The most important mechanism of tissue damage produced by ROMs is the peroxidation of lipids found in cell membranes and it may be estimated by malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. The purpose of this study, is to investigate tissue damage caused by ROMs in maxillary sinusitis in 24 rabbits. METHOD…

Immunoglobulin-coated bacteria in effusions obtained during chronic maxillary sinusitis.

Local protection of the maxillary sinuses against bacterial invasion takes both specific and non-specific forms. The present study is intended to evaluate the participation of the specific protective factors, immunoglobulins IgG, secretory IgA, IgM and complement, in protecting the maxillary sinuses during chronic maxillary sinusitis (CMS). We collected 47 sinus effusion samples from 37 patients (17 male, 20 female) with current CMS of at least 3 months' duration. Patients' ages ranged from 3 to 80 years. The effusion material was subjected to qualitative and quantitative bacteriological analy…

Microbiology of the transition from acute to chronic maxillary sinusitis.

Repeated aspirations of sinus secretions by endoscopy was performed in five patients over a period of 34-50 days and, ultimately, surgical drainage was done in three who presented with acute maxillary sinusitis that did not respond to antimicrobial therapy and became chronic. The aspirates were cultured for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Most of the bacteria isolated from the first culture were aerobic or facultative bacteria: Streptococcus pneumoniae (three isolates), Haemophilus influenzae non-type-b (two) and Moraxella catarrhalis (one). Three of these cultures yielded bacteria that were r…

Chronic maxillary sinusitis. Energy metabolism in sinus mucosa and secretion.

The energy metabolism in maxillary sinus mucosa and secretion from 41 patients with, in most cases, recurrent or chronic sinusitis was studied and compared with that in mucosal samples from patients with no previous history of sinus abnormality or infection. In freeze-dried samples, glucose and lactate were measured by enzymatic assays and adenine nucleotides by HPLC. In chronic sinusitis the lactate concentration in the mucosa was increased, probably as a result of increased glycolysis or of impaired diffusion within the mucosa. The lactate concentrations in purulent and non-purulent secretio

Long-term follow-up of chronic maxillary sinusitis in children.

In 26 children, aged between 3 and 7 years, the course of therapy-resistant chronic maxillary sinusitis over a mean period of 6 years and 3 months, was analysed. The results showed that spontaneous cure had occurred in 24 of the 26 children, on average after they reached the age of 7 years. The chronic character of upper respiratory tract infections in young children is difficult to explain.

Mucus production in chronic maxillary sinusitis. A quantitative histopathological study.

A quantitative histological investigation, comprising 47 maxillary sinuses with chronic sinusitis subjected to the whole-mount method, was undertaken principally to determine the degree of mucus production. The goblet cell density in the maxillary sinus was found to be significantly lower (7350 cells/mm2) in chronic sinusitis than in the normal maxillary sinus (9700 cells/mm2). The gland density was 1.2 gland/mm2, which is six times that of the normal maxillary sinus. Several varieties of pathological tubulous glands were encountered; they could be simple and short, long, or branched. These gl

Acute maxillary sinusitis--a comparison between 27 different treatment modes.

When comparing the outcome of different treatment modes for acute maxillary sinusitis, the roentgenological examination can be recommended for the objective evaluation as a complement to the clinical examination. Using the occipito-mental projection and an additional occipito-mental side view, the diagnosis can be established in a cheap and simple way, and the treatment effect can be followed during the course of treatment in the form of radiological sinus changes. The treatment outcome of 27 different treatment modes in 1320 cases of acute maxillary sinusitis (2039 maxillary sinuses) was comp…

[Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis with oral penicillin (author's transl)].

The present study was performed in order to pinpoint whether or not the oral penicillin treatment of the acute purulent maxillary sinusitis, which represents a common treatment modality in general practice, is in fact effective. The efficacy of penicillin V was tested in 32 patients under controlled conditions. In 24 out of 32 cases, which have been treated by administration of 4 X 1 tablet of Ospen 1500 per day, the acute signs and symptoms disappeared completely within a period of 7.4 +/- 2.02 days. The values obtained 4-5 hours after administration of 1 tablet of Ospen 1500 were significant…

Brain Abscess in the Contralateral Frontal Lobe Associated with Frontal Sinusitis that Spread from Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis.

We encountered a case involving a brain abscess in the right frontal lobe of a 12-year-old girl who was diagnosed with a chief complaint of headache and nausea. Left maxillary sinusitis, a dental infection related to dental caries and apical periodontitis, was observed in the left maxillary first molar in addition to left frontal sinusitis also being present. In addition to administering antibacterial agents, extraction of the left maxillary first molar and drainage of the paranasal sinuses and brain abscess were performed. Follow-up over the course of 1 year and 5 months indicated that the pa…

Comparison of moxifloxacin and cefuroxime axetil in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis. Sinusitis Infection Study Group.

The aim of this prospective, multicenter, randomized, double-masked clinical trial was to compare the efficacy and safety of moxifloxacin with those of cefuroxime axetil for the treatment of community-acquired acute sinusitis. Five hundred forty-two adult patients with symptoms and radiographic evidence of acute maxillary sinusitis received a 10-day oral regimen of either moxifloxacin (400 mg once daily) or cefuroxime axetil (250 mg twice daily). Acute signs and symptoms at presentation had lasted >7 days but <4 weeks. Clinical response at the end of therapy (7 to 14 days after treatment) was …

Three-dimensional morphometric and volumetric analysis of maxillary sinuses.

BACKGROUND: The maxillary sinus is a pyramid-shaped cavity with variations in shape, size, and capacity. Its dimensions increase gradually until early adulthood. Anatomical knowledge of the maxillary sinus is essential to understanding sinonasal disorders, planning surgical procedures, and preventing complications. Awareness of the sinus's proximity to critical structures helps avoid injuries during surgery. European, Korean, and Sri Lankan population study parameters show varying results and do not necessarily apply to the Indian population. The standard morphometric data of the maxillary sin

Optical Diagnostics of the Maxillary Sinuses by Digital Diaphanoscopy Technology.

The work is devoted to the development of a scientific and technical basis for instrument implementation of a digital diaphanoscopy technology for the diagnosis of maxillary sinus inflammatory diseases taking into account the anatomical features of patients (differences in skin structure, skull bone thickness, and sinus size), the optical properties of exercised tissues, and the age and gender characteristics of patients. The technology is based on visualization and analysis of scattering patterns of low-intensity radiation as it passes through the maxillary sinuses. The article presents the e

[The cytokines at maxillary sinuses washings as inflammatory process expression].

INTRODUCTION: In a pathogenetic chain of chronic sinusitis there is a set of cellular and humoral factors that are accepted as characteristic of a chronic inflammatory process. These include mast cells, granulocytes (basophilic and acidophilic), macrophages, lymphocytes, leucotriens (leukotrieny), and some pro-inflammatory cytokines. In the majority of cases these are effector factors that finalise pathogenetic immunological response. By determining concentration of pro-anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory cytokines present in the place where the disease process is in progress we can disting
