BACKGROUND: To identify and estimate the prevalence of mediastinal cysts lined by the epithelium expressing steroid receptors.
METHODS: We retrieved 19 mediastinal cysts from our pathology files from 1996 to 2004, and examined estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) expressions in the cysts.
RESULTS: Three paravertebral cysts, all in women, one bronchogenic cyst in a woman, nine thymic cysts, and six pericardial cysts were found in the pathology files. Paravertebral cysts were situated in the posterior mediastinum and were attached either to the left or the right of the vertebr…

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal bronchogenic cysts are rarely diagnosed in adults, hence surgical experience is limited particularly with regard to video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. In support of the thoracoscopic approach we report our single-center experience in this rare entity.
METHODS: Between June 1995 and December 2002, a nonselected series of 12 consecutive patients presenting with mediastinal bronchogenic cysts underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Six cysts (50%) had been diagnosed 2 to 22 years prior, only three of which became symptomatic. In asymptomatic patients (n = 7) su

We report the case of a 37-year-old male patient, who presented with a chief complaint of a sudden throbbing pain in the left side of the chest. Imaging techniques revealed a cystic mass in the anterior mediastinum and the left upper lung lobe. Despite a high suspicion of a hydatid cyst due to the clinical history of the patient and the cystic nature of the lesion, CT and subsequent MRI confirmed the presence of a cystic teratoma, entailing surgical intervention for removal. If untreated, a teratoma can cause significant and life-threatening complications.

We herein report a case of recurrent mediastinal cyst infection followed by bacteremia after endobronchial ultrasound-guide transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA). A 65-year-old Japanese male with sarcoidosis presented with 4 L progressive lymph node adenopathy and was diagnosed with mediastinal cyst by EBUS-TBNA. After bronchoscopy, he suffered from a high fever. Chest computed tomography showed enlargement of the 4 L lymph node with low attenuation areas, the elevation of mediastinal fat concentration. Blood cultures were positive for Streptococcus anginosus. Antimicrobial agents were …

We recently conducted video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) on an 8-day-old boy in whom a congenital mediastinal cyst had caused obstruction of the left main bronchus. After the surgery, the cyst recurred and caused reobstruction of the airway. When he was 51-day-old, we conducted VATS again. We could not perform cystectomy by VATS because the left lung was inflated, and we conducted cystectomy by thoracotomy.

Childhood tuberculosis (TB) can present with atypical and rare manifestations, posing significant diagnostic challenges. While mediastinal masses in children are frequently malignant, congenital cysts can become secondarily infected. Furthermore, TB is a rare but recognized cause of secondary autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). We present the case of a four-year-old partially vaccinated boy from Lahore who presented with a four-month history of low-grade fever, progressive pallor, and jaundice. Clinical examination revealed severe pallor, icterus, and hepatosplenomegaly. Laboratory investigati

Thyroglossal cyst is the most common congenital cervical pathology of childhood. Malign transformation in thyroglossal cyst is very rare and seen generally in adults. Here, we report on a 40-year-old female patient who presented with progressive dyspnea and enlarging cervical masses. Radiological examination revealed multiple cystic lesions in cervical and mediastinal region. The cysts were resected surgically via transcervical and partial upper sternotomy incision. Pathological examination revealed malignant change in the cervico-mediastinal thyroglossal cysts.

BACKGROUND: Cysts of the parathyroid gland located in the mediastinum are rare but well-defined clinical and pathologic entities. Since the first case report in 1925 a total of 28 mediastinal parathyroid cysts have been reported.
METHODS AND RESULTS: An 83-year-old woman with acute hypercalcemic crisis is reported. The patient had a giant mediastinal parathyroid cyst. Her symptoms resolved completely after the cystic tumor was resected. The case is discussed, and the world literature is reviewed.
CONCLUSIONS: Hypercalcemic crisis is a rare but potentially fatal complication of hyperparathyro

OBJECTIVES: Pure anterior mediastinal cysts (pAMC) are uncommon and typically benign lesions. In contrast to solid anterior mediastinal tumours, there are no standardized diagnostic or management guidelines, despite a small but clinically significant risk of malignancy. The goal of this study was to identify preoperative factors associated with malignancy in order to develop a clinical algorithm to guide the diagnosis and management of pAMC.
METHODS: This retrospective single-centre study was conducted at Toulouse University Hospital and included patients diagnosed with pAMC between January 2…

Two patients with congenital dysplasia of the lymphatic system and with chylous ascites are described. In one 24-year old woman with this rare condition, it was possible to demonstrate for the first time numerous mediastinal lymphatic cysts during lymphangiography. Both patients showed an abnormality of the retroperitoneal lymphatics, consisting of lymphatic dilatation and cysts. In the investigation of chylous ascites, direct lymphangiography must be regarded as a valuable and necessary investigation.

Mediastinal cysts are rare benign lesions and their diagnosis and treatment remain difficult and controversial. The development of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has broadened the horizon for the precise treatment of diseases. The present study reports the case of a 53-year-old male hospitalized with chest pain. All imaging findings, including computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and EUS, indicated a benign cystic mass in the posterior mediastinum. The posterior mediastinal cyst was treated with EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration combined with an intracapsular injection of antibiotics a…

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal bronchogenic cyst (MBC) is the most common primary cystic lesion of the mediastinum. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) compared with posterolateral thoracotomy (PLT) for the treatment of MBCs in a large series.
METHODS: Patients with MBCs who underwent surgical resection between August 2005 and December 2015 were identified from the electronic database of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, West China Hospital. The patient demographic characteristics, intraoperative findings, postoperative outcomes and fol

Hydatid disease remains a serious health problem in Mediterranean countries. Living in a rural area is an important risk factor for the disease. Hydatid cysts are usually located in the liver, lungs and brain. Mediastinal hydatid disease is very rare and has been noted only anecdotally in the literature. The present article reports a case of a mediastinal hydatid cyst rupturing into the pleural cavity, which was associated with pneumothorax of the same side. The patient's previous chest x-rays (posteroanterior and left lateral views) showed a well-defined mediastinal mass on the left side, and

BACKGROUND: Cardiac papillary fibroelastomas are rare, benign endocardial tumors most commonly found on cardiac valves. Non-valvular locations, particularly the posterior left atrial wall, are exceptionally uncommon. Thymic cysts are also rare lesions. The presence of these two non-homologous tumors in a single patient has not been previously documented. CASE PRESENTATION: This report presents a case of cardiac papillary fibroelastoma located on the posterior left atrial wall coexisting with a thymic cyst in the anterior mediastinum, both of which were incidentally detected and surgically trea

INTRODUCTION: Foregut duplication cysts are rare mediastinal malformations that can cause life-threatening respiratory compromise in early infancy and are often misdiagnosed on initial imaging.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A three-month-old boy, born at 37 weeks, developed progressive respiratory distress and cyanosis unresponsive to pneumonia therapy. Chest radiography suggested a hiatal hernia, whereas thoracic ultrasound showed a multiloculated cyst. Contrast-enhanced CT delineated a thick-walled paracardial cyst crossing the diaphragm and a smaller posterior chest-wall cyst. On hospital day 8 a

Pancreatic pseudocysts and peripancreatic fluid collections extending into the mediastinum are unusual. Endoscopically, intra-abdominal pseudocysts can be drained transmurally through the stomach or duodenum depending on the location. An endoscopic ultrasound-guided esophageal approach for mediastinal pseudocysts has not been reported commonly in the literature. We report a rare case of a large mediastinal pseudocyst that was drained through the distal esophagus with eventual complete resolution of symptoms and pseudocyst.
