Episodic Memory and Learning Dysfunction Over an 18-Month Period in Preclinical and Prodromal Alzheimer's Disease.

Recent meta-analyses suggest that episodic memory impairment associated with preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) equates to 0.15-0.24 standard deviations below that of cognitively healthy older adults. The current study aimed to characterize impairments in verbal acquisition and recall detectable at a single assessment, and investigate how verbal learning and episodic memory deteriorates in preclinical AD. A verbal list-learning task, the International Shopping List Test (ISLT), was administered multiple times over an 18-month period, to three groups of participants: amyloid-beta negative hea

On the effectiveness of event-related beta tACS on episodic memory formation and motor cortex excitability.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is widely used to entrain or modulate brain oscillations in order to investigate causal relationships between oscillations and cognition. OBJECTIVE: In a series of experiments we here addressed the question of whether event-related, transient tACS in the beta frequency range can be used to entrain beta oscillations in two different domains: episodic memory formation and motor cortex excitability. METHODS: In experiments 1 and 2, 72 healthy human participants engaged in an incidental encoding task of verbal and non-verbal materia

Subtle hippocampal deformities in breast cancer survivors with reduced episodic memory and self-reported cognitive concerns.

Cancer survivors have lingering cognitive problems, however the anatomical basis for these problems has yet to be fully elucidated. Clinical studies as well as animal models of chemotherapy have pinpointed cell and volume loss to the hippocampus, however, few studies have performed shape analysis of the hippocampus on cancer survivors. This study used high-dimensional deformation mapping analysis to test whether localized hippocampal deformation differs in breast cancer survivors who received adjuvant chemotherapy coupled with hormone blockade therapy, and if deformation was related to subject

Accuracy of episodic autobiographical memory in children with early thyroid hormone deficiency using a staged event.

Autobiographical memory (AM) is a highly constructive cognitive process that often contains memory errors. No study has specifically examined AM accuracy in children with abnormal development of the hippocampus, a crucial brain region for AM retrieval. Thus, the present study investigated AM accuracy in 68 typically and atypically developing children using a staged autobiographical event, the Children's Autobiographical Interview, and structural magnetic resonance imaging. The atypically developing group consisted of 17 children (HYPO) exposed during gestation to insufficient maternal thyroid

Prior knowledge biases episodic memory by filling in the gaps in imprecise memories: Simulating aging effects in younger adults.

Episodic memories are consistently biased by prior knowledge in the form of schemas (e.g., where objects typically are). Rational memory reconstruction models propose that this results from the strategic recruitment of schemas at retrieval when memory traces are imprecise. We recently proposed that these models can also account for the increase in schema bias with aging: Aging reduces memory precision, thereby increasing schema usage. However, causal evidence that underlying memory imprecision increases schema bias is lacking, which is a critical gap for reconstruction theories and for our ext

Echoes of time: Organization of episodic autobiographical memories in the brain according to their remoteness.

Autobiographical memories enable us to "navigate" our personal past, although how the brain organizes them over extended time periods remains unclear. Using task-based fMRI and decoding analysis we found that a distributed network of areas in the brain, including medial temporal lobes, posterior parietal cortex, prefrontal regions, and visual association areas, distinguished memory age. The analysis of representational similarity matrices suggested that different regions contributed to the representation of the identity of unique events or their temporal representation. The right hippocampus e

Neural reactivation in parietal cortex enhances memory for episodically linked information.

Remembering is a complex process that involves recalling specific details, such as who you were with when you celebrated your last birthday, as well as contextual information, such as the place where you celebrated. It is well established that the act of remembering enhances long-term retention of the retrieved information, but the neural and cognitive mechanisms that drive memory enhancement are not yet understood. One possibility is that the process of remembering results in reactivation of the broader episodic context. Consistent with this idea, in two experiments, we found that multiple re

Working Memory Modulation of Frontoparietal Network Connectivity in First-Episode Schizophrenia.

Working memory (WM) impairment is regarded as a core aspect of schizophrenia. However, the neural mechanisms behind this cognitive deficit remain unclear. The connectivity of a frontoparietal network is known to be important for subserving WM. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, the current study investigated whether WM-dependent modulation of effective connectivity in this network is affected in a group of first-episode schizophrenia (FES) patients compared with similarly performing healthy participants during a verbal n-back task. Dynamic causal modeling (DCM) of the coupling betwee

The role of movement representation in episodic memory for actions: A study of patients with apraxia.

In attempting to memorize a sentence about an action, such as "Pick up the glass," performing the action (motor encoding) results in better memory performance than simply memorizing the words (verbal encoding). Such enhancement of memory is known as the enactment effect. Several theories have been proposed to explain this phenomenon using concepts such as physical motor information associated with speed, form, amplitude of movement and/or movement representations involved in movement imaging, knowledge on manipulating tools, and spatial relationships in the enactment effect. However, there hav

The loss of episodic memories in retrograde amnesia: single-case and group studies.

Retrograde amnesia in neurological disorders is a perplexing and fascinating research topic. The severity of retrograde amnesia is not well correlated with that of anterograde amnesia, and there can be disproportionate impairments of either. Within retrograde amnesia, there are various dissociations which have been claimed-for example, between the more autobiographical (episodic) and more semantic components of memory. However, the associations of different types of retrograde amnesia are also important, and clarification of these issues is confounded by the fact that retrograde amnesia seems

Right temporofrontal cortex as critical locus for the ecphory of old episodic memories.

A 54 year old patient of average intelligence with a severe and enduring loss of old autobiographical memories after herpes simplex type 1 infection is described. She was tested with a comprehensive neuropsychological battery two years after the infection. Special emphasis was laid on examining different aspects of retrograde memory. The neurological examination involved MRI and SPECT. Brain damage was found mainly in the right temporofrontal region, but minor left sided damage to this region seems possible. The patient was in the normal or slightly subnormal range for all tested anterograde m

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol modulates amyloid-related entorhinal vulnerability and episodic memory performance in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral amyloid-beta (Aβ) burden does not fully explain variation in Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related brain structure and episodic memory. We examined whether circulating low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) modifies the cross-sectional statistical association between Aβ burden, the entorhinal cortex (EC) thickness and episodic memory performance. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 1,253 individuals in the Gwangju Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias cohort (798 cognitively normal, 425 mild cognitive impairment, 30 AD dementia) were analyzed. Trajectory scanning as a predictive coding mechanism for goal-directed navigation, obstacle avoidance and episodic memory.

Planning of future trajectories through the environment may rely on our capacity to encode and recall episodic memories that include spatial representations. Here, we describe potential mechanisms for behaviour based on episodic memory that would use neural trajectory scanning to explore and select trajectories towards remembered goal locations. This model is consistent with rodent neurophysiological data recorded in the medial entorhinal cortex that demonstrated alternating left-right scans of space and data recorded in the hippocampus of place cell firing that showed alternating scans, or sc

The effects of exercise on episodic memory in patients with depression: a three-level meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Using a three-level meta-analysis approach, this study evaluated the effects of exercise on episodic memory in patients with depression and explored its moderating variables. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across seven databases to identify randomized controlled trials examining the effects of exercise interventions on episodic memory in patients with depression. Two researchers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias. A three-level meta-analysis was performed to calculate the pooled effect size (Hedges' g), and subgroup analyses we

Common and distinct contributions of the dorsomedial prefrontal and posterior parietal cortices to social episodic memory.

The self-reference effect (SRE) refers to the robust mnemonic advantage for self-relevant information and is characterized by a graded pattern spanning the self, close others, and distant others. Despite extensive behavioural evidence, causal evidence for the neural mechanisms supporting the SRE remains limited, particularly during incidental encoding and across source memory, metacognition, and emotional valence. We investigated the causal contributions of the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) to self-other episodic memory and metacognition using focal

Sex differences in the association between episodic memory residual reserve index and change in executive function.

Sex differences in cognitive reserve might contribute to females being disproportionately affected by Alzheimer's disease (AD). We investigated sex differences in the protective effects of cognitive reserve, and whether brain beta-amyloid accounts for differences. Older adults (n = 997 from the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle Study of Ageing) diagnosed as Cognitively Normal, Mild Cognitive Impairment, or AD at baseline were assessed every 18 months for up to a maximum of seven visits. Cognitive reserve was calculated from the variance in episodic memory not explained by demographi

Memristor-based circuit design of episodic memory neural network and its application in hurricane category prediction.

Episodic memory, as a type of long-term memory (LTM), is used to learn and store the unique personal experience. Based on the episodic memory biological mechanism, this paper proposes a bionic episodic memory memristive neural network circuit. The proposed memristive neural network circuit includes a neocortical module, a parahippocampal module and a hippocampus module. The neocortical module with the two paths structure is used to receive the sensory signal, and is also used to separate and transmit the spatial information and the non-spatial information involved in the sensory signal. Adolescent alcohol exposure disrupts episodic-like memory by impairing dopamine synapses in the mouse prelimbic cortex.

Heavy alcohol use during adolescence has a significant impact on cognitive functions, such as episodic memory, even after detoxification. However, in animal models, defects in episodic memory by adolescent alcohol exposure have not been consistently replicated, and thus, the brain regions and systems that are involved remain to be elucidated. Here, we show that adolescent alcohol exposure impairs episodic memory through the impairment of the dopamine system in the prelimbic region (PrL) of the medial prefrontal cortex in both females and males. Using mice as a model, we first show that adolesc

Mental rotation, episodic memory, and executive control: Possible effects of biological sex and oral contraceptive use.

Oral contraceptives (OCs) are one of the most common forms of hormonal birth control. A small literature suggests that OC use may affect visuospatial ability, episodic memory, and executive control. However, previous studies have been criticized for small sample sizes and the use of different, single cognitive tests. We investigated the degree to which biological sex and OC use might affect individual mental rotation, episodic memory, and executive control in a large sample of healthy, young adults (N = 155, including 52 OC users, 53 naturally cycling females, and 50 males) tested individually

Abnormal dynamic reconfiguration of the large-scale functional network in schizophrenia during the episodic memory task.

Episodic memory deficits are the core feature in schizophrenia (SCZ). Numerous studies have revealed abnormal brain activity associated with this disorder during episodic memory, however previous work has only relied on static analysis methods that treat the brain as a static monolithic structure, ignoring the dynamic features at different time scales. Here, we applied dynamic functional connectivity analysis to functional magnetic resonance imaging data during episodic memory and quantify integration and recruitment metrics to reveal abnormal dynamic reconfiguration of brain networks in SCZ.
