EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM SOCIAL ISOLATION ON MEMORY AND DEPRESSIVE-LIKE BEHAVIOR IN RATS OF DIFFERENT SOCIAL STATUS.

Prolonged social isolation constitutes a potent chronic stressor capable of inducing behavioral and neurochemical alterations associated with anxiety, depression, and cognitive dysfunction. In rodent models, dominant and submissive individuals exhibit distinct behavioral and neuroendocrine responses under conditions of social stress. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of 30 days of social isolation on depressive-like and anxiety-like behaviors, as well as cognitive performance, in rats with differing social status. Experiments were conducted on 20 groups of white laboratory rats (

Associations of a toenail metal mixture with attention and memory in the Gulf long-term follow-up (GuLF) study.

BACKGROUND: Research on metal-associated neurodegeneration has largely focused on single metals. Since metal exposures typically co-occur as combinations of both toxic and essential elements, a mixtures framework is important for identifying risk and protective factors. This study examined associations between toenail levels of an eight-metal mixture and attention and memory in men living in US Gulf states. METHODS: We measured toenail concentrations of toxic (arsenic, chromium, lead, and mercury) and essential (copper, manganese, selenium, and zinc) metals in 413 non-smoking men (23-69 years

Long term clinical outcomes of adult hematolymphoid malignancies treated at Tata Memorial Hospital: An institutional audit.

INTRODUCTION: There is paucity of data from India about the outcomes of patients with various hematological malignancies. Since its formation in 2009, the adult hematolymphoid disease management group of the Tata Memorial Centre is dedicated to the treatment of hematological malignancies alone. In this report, we present the outcomes of patients treated at our centre over a 5 year period for various haematological malignancies in both transplant and non-transplant setting. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of all patients registered in adult hematolymphoid disease management group bet

The long-term effects of prenatal nicotine exposure on verbal working memory: an fMRI study of young adults.

BACKGROUND: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the long-term effects of prenatal nicotine exposure on verbal working memory were investigated in young adults. Participants were members of the Ottawa Prenatal Prospective Study, a longitudinal study that collected a unique body of information on participants from infancy to young adulthood. This allowed for the measurement of an unprecedented number of potentially confounding drug exposure variables including: prenatal marijuana and alcohol exposure and current marijuana, nicotine and alcohol use. METHODS: Twelve young adults w

Differential effects of short- and long-term hyperhomocysteinaemia on cholinergic neurons, spatial memory and microbleedings in vivo in rats.

Hyperhomocysteinaemia (HHcy) has been identified as a cardiovascular risk factor for neurodegenerative brain diseases. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of short (5 months) or long (15 months) HHcy in Sprague–Dawley rats in vivo. Short- and long-term HHcy differentially affected spatial memory as tested in a partially baited eight-arm radial maze. HHcy significantly reduced the number of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT)-positive neurons in the basal nucleus of Meynert and ChAT-positive axons in the cortex only after short-term but not long-term treatment, while acetyl

Intensification of long-term memory deficit by chronic stress and prevention by nicotine in a rat model of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cholinergic dysfunction and deposition of beta-amyloid (Aβ) in regions of the brain associated with learning and memory. The sporadic nature and late onset of most AD cases suggests that aside from biological determinants, environmental factors such as stress may also play a role in the progression of the disease. Behavioral and molecular studies were utilized to evaluate the effects of chronic nicotine treatment in the prevention of impairment of long-term memory. The rat model of AD was induced by i.c.v. os

Both ethanol toxicity and thiamine deficiency are necessary to produce long-term memory deficits in the young chick.

This series of studies revealed that a 2.5-mg dose of oxythiamine administered over 2 days yielded memory deficits from 10 min following passive avoidance learning. This result existed in association with slowing of righting reflex. Administration of thiamine reversed the memory deficit and the slowing of the righting reflex. A combination of oxythiamine and peripheral alcohol administration also resulted in memory deficits appearing from 10 min after training; however, in contrast to the effect of thiamine deficiency alone, the deficits induced by thiamine deficiency in association with acute

Acute and chronic zolpidem administration changes hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) as a possible mechanism of memory impairment.

OBJECTIVES: Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine GABAA receptor positive modulator commonly used to treat short-term insomnia. Given its widespread use, understanding its potential impact on cognitive function and synaptic mechanisms is of great interest. This study aimed to investigate the effects of acute and chronic zolpidem administration on hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) as a possible mechanism underlying memory impairment in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three groups of rats were used in this study: control, acute (received a single dose of zolpidem, 15 mg/kg), and chronic (receive

Association of glymphatic dysfunction, free water, white matter integrity and long-term memory performance in aging autistic adults.

BACKGROUND: Autistic adults are at elevated risk of accelerated cognitive aging and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), yet the underlying neurobiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Dysfunction in the glymphatic system—a brain-wide network responsible for clearing waste via interstitial fluid flow—may contribute to this vulnerability by promoting extracellular free water (FW) accumulation and white matter (WM) degeneration. METHODS: A total of 113 autistic and 90 age- and sex-matched neurotypical (NT) adults (aged 18–71 years) underwent multimodal MRI scanning and episo

Long-Term Irrigation History Provides Evidence for Drought Memory in Clonally Propagated Grapevines During Water Deficit and Recovery.

Grapevine adapts to water stress through complex hydraulic and growth adjustments, with its recovery capacity being a key component of drought tolerance. Recurrent drought can induce an acquired "water stress memory" (priming), altering a genotype's response to future stress. We investigated whether drought responses in grapevine progenies are more shaped by genetic background or environmental history. Primed (NI) and non-primed (FI) progenies of two varieties: Trincadeira (isohydric) and Castelão (anisohydric) were exposed to well-watered (WW) and water stress (WS) conditions, followed by rec

Gallbladder disease diagnosis from ultrasound using squeeze-and-excitation capsule network with convolutional bidirectional long short-term memory.

The gallbladder is a small, hollow organ positioned beneath the liver, primarily responsible for temporarily storing bile. Bile is a fluid formed by the liver that helps digestion. There are various types of gallbladder disease. Early diagnosis and identification are crucial for effective treatment of gallbladder disorders. Poor medical outcomes and improved patient symptoms may result from errors or delays in diagnosis. Numerous symptoms and signs, particularly those associated with gallbladder disorder, might be blurred. As a result, medical specialists must understand and interpret ultrasou

Long short term memory networks for predicting resilient Modulus of stabilized base material subject to wet-dry cycles.

The resilient modulus (MR) of different pavement materials is one of the most important input parameters for the mechanistic-empirical pavement design approach. The dynamic triaxial test is the most often used method for evaluating the MR, although it is expensive, time-consuming, and requires specialized lab facilities. The purpose of this study is to establish a new model based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks for predicting the MR of stabilized base materials with various additives during wet-dry cycles (WDC). A laboratory dataset of 704 records has been used using input parameters

Epileptic Seizure Detection with an End-to-End Temporal Convolutional Network and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Model.

Automatic seizure detection plays a key role in assisting clinicians for rapid diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. In view of the parallelism of temporal convolutional network (TCN) and the capability of bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) in mining the long-range dependency of multi-channel time-series, we propose an automatic seizure detection method with a novel end-to-end TCN-BiLSTM model in this work. First, raw EEG is filtered with a 0.5-45 Hz band-pass filter, and the filtered data are input into the proposed TCN-BiLSTM network for feature extraction and classification. Post-

A Stacked Long Short-Term Memory Approach for Predictive Blood Glucose Monitoring in Women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a subtype of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. Managing blood glucose (BG) within the healthy physiological range can reduce clinical complications for women with gestational diabetes. The objectives of this study are to (1) develop benchmark glucose prediction models with long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network models using time-series data collected from the GDm-Health platform, (2) compare the prediction accuracy with published results, and (3) suggest an optimized clinical review schedule with the potential to reduce the overall

Protein profile of scorpion venom from Hottentotta rugiscutis and its immunogenic potential in inducing long term memory response.

The scorpions of the Buthidae family exhibit diverse toxins with proven pharmacological activities and yet underexplored. The Hottentotta rugiscutis is a commonly found south-Indian buthid scorpion, whose venom proteomic profile is unknown. In this study, the venom was biochemically and immunologically characterized by SDS-PAGE, MALDI-TOF MS, Western blot and ELISA. The regional and seasonal variation in the venom composition from the same species was also assessed at the molecular mass level. The venom was further studied in albino mice to understand its impact on various blood parameters. Th

Borrelia burgdorferi infection induces long-term memory-like responses in macrophages with tissue-wide consequences in the heart.

Lyme carditis is an extracutaneous manifestation of Lyme disease characterized by episodes of atrioventricular block of varying degrees and additional, less reported cardiomyopathies. The molecular changes associated with the response to Borrelia burgdorferi over the course of infection are poorly understood. Here, we identify broad transcriptomic and proteomic changes in the heart during infection that reveal a profound down-regulation of mitochondrial components. We also describe the long-term functional modulation of macrophages exposed to live bacteria, characterized by an augmented glycol

Chronic exposure to TNF reprograms cell signaling pathways in fibroblast-like synoviocytes by establishing long-term inflammatory memory.

Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) play a critical role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Chronic inflammation induces transcriptomic and epigenetic modifications that imparts a persistent catabolic phenotype to the FLS, despite their dissociation from the inflammatory environment. We analyzed high throughput gene expression and chromatin accessibility data from human and mouse FLS from our and other studies available on public repositories, with the goal of identifying the persistently reprogrammed signaling pathways driven by chronic inflammation. We found that the gene expre

Brain tissue-resident immune memory cells are required for long-term protection against CNS infection with rabies virus.

Immune memory cells residing in previously infected, nonlymphoid tissues play a role in immune surveillance. In the event that circulating antibodies fail to prevent virus spread to the tissues in a secondary infection, these memory cells provide an essential defense against tissue reinfection. CNS tissues are isolated from circulating immune cells and antibodies by the blood-brain barrier, making the presence of tissue-resident immune memory cells particularly needed to combat recurrent infection by neurotropic viruses. Wild-type and laboratory-engineered rabies viruses are neurotropic, diffe
