A Mendelian randomization study of the associations between depression, anxiety and clinical conditions including thyroid nodules, flatulence, and irregular menstruation.

OBJECTIVE: Given the high prevalence of psychological and physical conditions as well as the limited understanding of the potential causal links, we aim to explore the associations between psychological problems (depression and anxiety) and physical health issues (thyroid nodules, flatulence, menstrual disorders). METHODS: Genetic data on depression and anxiety were sourced from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium and the FinnGen database, respectively. Meanwhile, datasets of the Epidemiological Network were employed to investigate thyroid nodules, flatulence, and menstrual irregularities. Th

The burden of menstrual irregularities among women living with HIV in Nigeria: a comprehensive review.

BACKGROUND: Menstrual irregularities significantly distress women living with HIV (WLHIV), impacting their reproductive health and quality of life. Although the underlying mechanism remains inconclusive, studies have outlined possible contributory factors. This narrative review explores the burden of menstrual irregularities and associated hormonal dysregulation among women living with HIV in Nigeria. It synthesises data from studies to present an overview of the prevalence, patterns, potential etiology, and impacts of menstrual irregularities among WLHIV. MAIN BODY: A literature search acros

Menstrual characteristics of atypical anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: While menstrual irregularities are acknowledged in restrictive-type eating disorders (EDs), the menstrual characteristics specific to atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN) remain inadequately defined. This study aims to compare the menstrual features of anorexia nervosa (AN) and AAN. METHOD: Adolescents diagnosed with AN or AAN who exhibited secondary amenorrhoea at presentation and had their menstrual cycles restored during follow-up were eligible for this study. Clinical and menstrual data at admission and during follow-up were obtained from patient files, and compared between the AN a

COVID-19 vaccination and menstrual disorders among women: Findings from a meta-analysis study.

BACKGROUND: COVID - 19 vaccine can lead to various local and systemic side effects, including menstrual irregularities in women. There is no robust quantitative evidence of the association between the COVID - 19 vaccine and menstrual irregularities. A meta-analysis was performed to estimate the pooled prevalence of a range of menstrual disorders that may occur in women following COVID - 19 vaccination. METHODS: After searching for epidemiological studies, we systematically performed a meta-analysis on PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, and Science Direct. Sixteen studies were finally included in the stu

The importance of vitamin D in the diagnosis and treatment of adenomyosis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

There is still no unified theory of the occurrence of adenomyosis. The theories of retrograde menstruation, metaplasia, activation of Mullerian residues, lymphatic and vascular dissemination, iatrogenic dissemination, immunological changes, genetic predisposition, etc. are discussed. The theory of retrograde menstruation is the most relevant among all these theories. The aim is to study the content of folic acid, vitamins B1, D, E, ferritin in the blood, zinc, copper, calcium in the blood and removed uterine tissues, to assess the hormonal status in women with combined uterine pathology leiomy

Menstrual problems in adolescence: relationship to serum vitamins A and E, and systemic inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin status and inflammatory mechanisms may be related to menstrual cycle abnormalities. We investigated the associations between serum fat soluble vitamin (vitamins A and E) concentrations and biomarkers of inflammation and antioxidant status with menstrual characteristics, primary dysmenorrhea (PD) and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in healthy adolescents. METHODS: A total of 897 adolescent girls either suffering from PMS (n = 134), PD (n = 322), PMS and PD (n = 293) or healthy adolescents (n = 148) were recruited. Serum vitamin A and E, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-C

Migraine in Women.

Migraine is one of the most common neurological disorders, affecting women disproportionally at a rate of 3:1. Prior to puberty, boys and girls are equally affected, but the female preponderance emerges after puberty. Migraine pathophysiology is not fully understood, and although the hormonal effect of estrogen is significant, other factors are at play. This article will focus on the hormonal influence on migraine in women. Here we review our most recent understanding of migraine and menstrual migraine, including epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment strategies for this challenging diso

[Imperforate hymen – an often missed diagnosis].

Imperforate hymen - an often missed diagnosis Imperforate hymen is the most common congenital malformation in the female reproduction system that give rise to obstructive symptoms. If the diagnosis is not made in the newborn girl, symptoms often first arise at menarche. The diagnosis is easy to make but has to be suspected. This case reports describes the typical clinical picture of a late diagnosed imperforate hymen. As shown in this case and from a review of the literature, these girls often have symptoms for a long time before the diagnosis is made. Further, they are often initially misdiag

Microperforate hymen presenting with incomplete abortion: A case report.

A 20-year-old patient with 3 months of amenorrhea presented in the labor room with bleeding per vaginum and having experienced lower abdominal pain for 2 h. She had a history of difficult intercourse and prolonged menstrual flow. Inspection revealed a bleeding point over an obstructing membrane at the level of the vaginal introitus. Subsequent vaginal examination confirmed the diagnosis of microperforate hymen. Her urine pregnancy test was positive and an ultrasound examination revealed the presence of retained products of conception in the endometrial cavity. Hymenectomy was carried out to ev

The perimenopausal woman: endocrinology and management.

This review focuses on the endocrine and physiological features of the transition to menopause, known as the menopausal transition or the perimenopause. The updated 2011 Stages of Reproductive Aging workshop (STRAW) system is presented with a discussion of the new subdivisions within stages -3 (late reproductive age) and +1 (postmenopause) and incorporation of FSH and other biomarkers in the supportive criteria. Ovarian follicle reserve and ovarian follicle dynamics are also discussed in terms of the changes that occur with reproductive aging, and the dramatic effect these changes have on the

Endometriosis: the role of neuroangiogenesis.

Endometriosis is a common cause of pelvic pain and infertility, affecting ∼10% of reproductive-age women. Annual costs for medical and surgical care in the United States exceed $20 billion. The disorder is characterized by implants of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. Endometriotic lesions induce a state of chronic peritoneal inflammation, accompanied by elevated prostaglandin, cytokine, and growth factor concentrations. The current therapy is surgical ablation of ectopic implants and hormones that block the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, but these approaches are expensive,

Treatment of the adolescent patient with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Frequently, a multidisciplinary approach is needed in the management of the adolescent with PCOS. Treatment must be provided in a supportive environment. Because adolescent females are concerned about their appearance any image, short-term treatment goals are usually directed toward the amelioration of hirsutism, acne, and irregular menstruation. Although not immediately concerning to the adolescent, the prevention of long-term sequelae from anovulation and hyperinsulinemia is also important. Multiple concomitant therapies are often necessary to address the variety of symptoms and achieve bett
