We reviewed eight cases of gastrointestinal duplication cysts to determine whether the combination of an echogenic inner mucosal layer and hypoechoic outer muscular layer could be seen consistently enough to be of diagnostic value. We compared our findings to those seen in twenty-seven other abdominal cysts and conclude that when identified together, the two layers are highly suggestive, if not completely diagnostic of enteric duplication cysts.

INTRODUCTION: Mesenteric lymphangioma is a rare cystic lesion that may present as acute abdomen due to events such as axial torsion. This is a case report of a small bowel mesenteric lymphangioma presented with axial torsion, which required emergency surgery after repeated abdominal symptoms and hospital visits failed to identify the lesion. This report includes a review of the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old boy was presented with abdominal pain and vomiting. Abdominal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced CT revealed the whirlpool sign, leading to a diagnosis of small bowel volvulus.

An unusual case of a jejunal mesenteric pseudocyst treated by laparoscopic resection is reported. A 44-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with intermittent upper abdominal pain and diarrhea. Physical examination revealed slight periumbilical tenderness, and no masses were palpable. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a 4-cm-sized nonenhancing high-density mass with a heterogeneous pattern on a proximal small bowel loop. Based on these findings, a gastrointestinal stromal tumor accompanied by hemorrhagic and cystic change, a mesenteric hematoma, or a desmoid tumor was diagnose

A 35-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for investigation of lower abdominal pain and a feeling of fullness. At her first consultation, a transvaginal ultrasonography (US) revealed a homogeneous cystic mass in the lower abdomen. Over a period of 8 months the US findings of the content of this mass changed from fine and faint internal echoes to moderate amounts of irregularly contoured internal echoes. At laparotomy, the cystic mass, which measured 3.0 x 3.0 x 3.5 cm, appeared to arise in the sigmoid mesocolon and tightly adhered to the appendix. The cyst was unilocular and contained a

Hydatid disease, a zoonosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus (EG), primarily affects the liver and lungs. Pancreatic involvement is exceedingly rare, representing only 0.2% of cases. In the reported case of a giant pancreatic hydatid cyst in a 22-year-old female patient. This patient from La Rioja, Argentina, presented with abdominal pain, distension, and early satiety. A CT scan revealed a 16 x 12 cm cyst in the pancreatic head. Preoperative albendazole was administered, followed by a cephalic duodenopancreatectomy due to cyst contact with the superior mesenteric vein. The postoperative peri

Enteric duplication cysts are rare congenital malformations of the gastrointestinal tract that may present with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from incidental findings to life-threatening complications such as intestinal obstruction, volvulus, perforation, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Due to their nonspecific clinical presentation, preoperative diagnosis remains challenging. We report the case of a four-year-old boy who presented with a three-day history of fever, diarrhea, progressive lethargy, and colicky abdominal pain. Initial clinical assessment suggested acute inf

Peritoneal cysts are not uncommon in children - mesenteric/omental cysts being the commoner entity. Peritoneal cysts in the falciform ligament are a very rare entity reported in the literature. We present a 5-year-old boy who presented with pain upper central abdomen and few episodes of non-bilious vomiting for 1 year. He was stable on examination, with abdominal examination revealing the fullness of the abdomen with palpable generalised cystic mass which was mobile transversely. Ultrasound and contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen revealed intra-peritoneal cystic lesion measuri

A case of multiple chylous cysts of the abdomen in a 35 years old female is presented here. The patient presented with signs and symptoms of acute intestinal obstruction. Exploratory laparotomy revealed few intestinal adhesions along with multiple small cysts containing blood stained gelatinous material in the abdominal cavity, some of which were excised alongwith lymph nodes. The abdomen was closed after a saline peritoneal lavage. Chylous nature of the cysts was confirmed on histopathology. The post-operative course was asymptomatic.

Cystic lesions within the peritoneum have been classified classically according to their lining on histology into four categories-endothelial, epithelial, mesothelial, and others (germ cell tumors, sex cord gonadal stromal tumors, cystic mesenchymal tumors, fibrous wall tumors, and infectious cystic peritoneal lesions). In this article, we will proceed to classify cystic peritoneal lesions focusing on the degree of radiological complexity into three categories-simple cystic, mildly complex, and cystic with solid component lesions. Many intra-abdominal collections within the peritoneal cavity s

INTRODUCTION: The omphalomesenteric duct (OMD) is an embryologic structure that connects the midgut to the yolk sac. It usually obliterates between the 9th and 18th weeks of gestation. The omphalomesenteric duct cyst is an embryologic remnant of the yolk stalk. If the yolk stalk does not obliterate completely, various portions may persist, giving rise to many entities, including an omphalomesenteric duct cyst.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: An extremely rare case of a band formed by an omphalomesenteric cyst causing small bowel obstruction is presented in a 14-year-old male patient with no previous me…

Acute abdominal pain is a common complaint in children. We came across several unusual causes of acute abdomen including jejunal haematoma, perforation and abdominal abscess following hydrostatic intussusception reduction, twisting of mesenteric cyst, perforation of sigmoid colon and Meckel's diverticulum presenting with intussusception. In this article, we aim to present imaging features of these entities so that paediatric surgeons, radiologists and other health-care providers are aware of these unusual manifestations of acute abdomen.

We recently treated a patient with strangulating intestinal necrosis caused by the enlarged abdominal cysts characteristic of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). A 75-year-old Japanese woman with a 30-year history of ADPKD underwent surgery to treat a diagnosis of acute abdomen. Surgery confirmed that the mesenterium was stretched caudally over the huge cysts that occupied the entire abdominal cavity, and the intestines were necrotic from the jejunum to the transverse colon. Veins from the necrotic intestine were dilated, and an arterial pulse could be felt. These findings re

Enteric duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies of the gastrointestinal tract. They may remain asymptomatic or present with non-specific symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal distension, and intestinal obstruction. We report the case of an eight-month-old male infant with no significant medical history who presented with a four-day history of vomiting that became bilious, accompanied by generalized hypotonia and dehydration. Clinical evaluation revealed a Glasgow Coma Scale of 11/15 and mild hyponatremia with otherwise normal laboratory results. Abdominal ultrasound showed inversion of

Endometriosis is a painful condition characterized by growth of endometrial cysts outside the uterus. Here, we tested the hypothesis that peripheral innervation and prostaglandin levels contribute to endometriosis-associated pain. Female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 16) were surgically instrumented by transplanting uterine tissue onto mesenteric arteries within the peritoneal cavity to create a model of endometriosis which forms extra-uterine endometrial cysts and vaginal hyperalgesia. Our results describe a significant positive correlation between endometriosis-induced vaginal hyperalgesia and cy

Since it can display the gastric folds, as well as the gastric wall and the exogastric area, sonography is a reliable way of diagnosing the giant hypertrophy of the gastric mucosa (Ménétrier's disease). The characteristic pastterns are: --a considerable thickening of the gastric folds and wall, --a high sonolucency, --the presence of the intra-mural cysts, --some "hilly" deformations in the exogastric part of the stomach, --occasionally, a mesenteric lipomatosis.

BACKGROUND: Cystic lymphangioma is a rare benign tumor that affects the lymphatic system. Mesenteric lymphangiomas in the small bowel are extremely uncommon.
CASE SUMMARY: We present a 21-year-old female patient who complained of abdominal pain. The diagnosis of ovarian torsion was suspected after abdominopelvic unenhanced computed tomography and ultrasound revealed a large cyst in contact with the bladder, ovary, and uterus. The patient underwent emergency laparotomy performed by gynecologists, but it was discovered that the cystic tumor originated from the jejunum. Gastrointestinal surgeons

Mesenteric cystic lymphangiomas (MCLs) are rare benign cystic tumours of unknown aetiology, most often seen in paediatric patients. The clinical presentation is diverse, ranging from an incidentally discovered abdominal cyst to symptoms of acute abdomen. A 20-year-old male presented with generalised abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting of several hours duration following heavy lifting. Emergency laparotomy revealed a 15 x 10 x 8-cm pedicled cystic mass of the mid-ileal mesentery, causing a volvulus. The cyst and a 20-cm gangrenous intestinal segment were resected with anastomosis. The postopera…
