Neural correlates of metacognitive monitoring in chronic moderate to severe traumatic brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Metacognition can be negatively affected after moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to identify patterns of neural activation associated with metacognitive confidence judgments after moderate to severe TBI. METHOD: Twenty-four adults with chronic moderate to severe TBI and 10 non-injured adults (nonTBIs) were scanned while performing a meta-memory recognition task. Metacognitive accuracy was quantified using a signal detection theory approach. Activation present during the metamemory task, as well as gr…

A Study on the Effectiveness of Metacognitive Training in Treating Negative Symptoms of Different Subtypes of Schizophrenia.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the efficacy of metacognitive training (MCT) as an adjunctive treatment strategy for schizophrenia, particularly its impact on negative symptoms and potential mechanisms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study included a total of 73 inpatients with schizophrenia. 36 patients were in the MCT group and 37 patients were in the control group. Both groups of patients were receiving a single second-generation antipsychotic drug treatment. The MCT group underwent a 4-week MCT program consisting of 8 modules, while the control group received non-cognitive psychologic

Psychometric properties and validation of the metacognitive self-assessment scale (MSAS) in a Turkish sample.

OBJECTIVE: Metacognition, a multifaceted psychological construct, encompasses recognising and explaining one's cognitive processes and those of others. Notably, deficits in metacognitive abilities are linked with diminished social performance, reduced quality of life, and increased severity of Personality Disorders (PD). While there are other assessment tools available in Turkish for evaluating metacognition, none offer the same combination of speed, simplicity, flexibility, and multidimensionality for screening metacognitive abilities as the Metacognition Self-Assessment Scale (MSAS).The Meta…

Metacognitive beliefs and desire thinking as potential maintenance factors of compulsive sexual behavior.

Using the Elaborated Intrusion Theory of Desire and the Self-Regulatory Executive Function model of psychopathology as bases, this study explored whether metacognitive beliefs and desire thinking (DT) are associated with higher levels of Compulsive Sexual Behavior (CSB). A total of 1185 participants from the general population were included in the study (mean ± SD age = 25.32 years ± 5.58; age range = 18-19 years; females = 76.7 %). Metacognitive beliefs, DT, CSB, anxiety and depressive symptoms were assessed. Correlation analyses and path analyses were run. Results of the path analysis showed

Perfectionism in patients with eating disorders: The role of metacognitive beliefs and repetitive negative thinking.

INTRODUCTION: Using the Self-Regulatory Executive Function model as a basis, this study explored whether, in patients with eating disorders (EDs), metacognitions and repetitive negative thinking are associated with higher levels of perfectionisms. METHODS: One hundred twenty-three outpatients with EDs were recruited. Perfectionism, metacognitive beliefs, worry, rumination, anger rumination, affective and eating symptoms were assessed. Correlation and hierarchal regression analyses were run. RESULTS: Higher endorsement of positive beliefs about worry was associated with higher levels of 'pers…

Metacognitive interpersonal group therapy for adolescents with avoidant personality disorder: The case of Sofia.

INTRODUCTION: Early intervention studies for adolescents and early adults are required to explore the acceptability and effectiveness of psychological therapies across the full range of personality disorders (PDs) beyond just borderline PD. The main aim of the current paper was to describe a Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy group adaptation for adolescents (MIT-GA) presenting with PDs featuring overcontrol and social inhibition, and in particular Avoidant PD characteristics. METHODS: We report findings from a single case of a female adolescent diagnosed with Avoidant PD providing prelimina

Mediating role for metacognitive processes in the relationship between schizotypy and anxiety and depression symptoms.

Introduction: Depression and anxiety symptoms are highly prevalent in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders and are commonly associated with schizotypy in non-clinical samples. However, it remains unclear what factors could be contributing to the relationships between schizotypy and anxiety and depression symptoms. Using path analysis, we explored the complex interplay between schizotypy, metacognitive beliefs, cognitive insight, and symptoms of emotional distress. Methods: Self-report data of schizotypy, metacognitive beliefs, cognitive insight, depression, and anxiety symptoms were collected from

Is Metacognitive Training effective for improving neurocognitive function in patients with a recent onset of psychosis?

The aims are to assess improvements in memory, attention and executive function in first-episode psychosis after Metacognitive Training (MCT). A multicenter randomized clinical trial was performed with two arms: MCT and psychoeducational intervention. A total of 126 patients with a diagnosis of psychosis, less than 5 years from the onset of the disease, were included. Patients were assessed two or three moments (baseline, post-treatment, 6 months follow-up) depending on the test, with a battery of neurocognitive tests (TAVEC, TMTA-B, CPT, WCST, Stroop and premorbid IQ). General linear models f

Metacognitions in Patients With Frequent Mental Disorders After Diagnosis of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of mental disorders, particularly adjustment disorder (AD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and panic disorder (PD) is increased in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). However, it is unclear which pathogenic mechanisms determine their development and could therefore be targeted in prevention or therapeutic interventions. Here, we assessed metacognitions in a sample of PAH patients with and without MDD and PD. Moreover, we reconstructed the course of mental illnesses following the PAH diagnosis. METHODS: Two hundred seventeen PAH patients were includ…

Individual differences in anger and displaced aggression: The role of metacognitive beliefs and anger rumination.

Metacognitive model is a theoretical approach aimed to explain emotion dysregulation and others emotion-related issues, such anger, and aggressive behavior. From this model, people having higher maladaptive metacognitive beliefs (e.g., "I can't control my thoughts") are more likely to activate and maintain anger rumination and, in turn, to experience higher levels of anger and to act aggressively. Preliminary evidence shows the role of metacognitive beliefs on anger rumination and anger levels, whereas no studies have examined its association with aggressive behavior. This study first examined

Metacognitions in heterosexual, bisexual, and homosexual men: with or without premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Premature ejaculation (PE) and erectile dysfunction (ED) are prevalent sexual problems, with evidence to suggest variation across sexual orientation. Contributing factors have traditionally been divided into organic and psychological categories. While limited research has found support for the influence of metacognitive beliefs, these studies did not investigate potential differences in sexual orientation. AIM: The current study aimed to investigate the differences in metacognitive beliefs in men with or without PE and/or ED and whether these varied according to sexual orientation

Session-specific effects of the Metacognitive Training for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (MCT-OCD).

Objective: Most studies focus on overall treatment effects by assessing symptom severity before and after treatment, but few investigate session-specific effects of an intervention. The aim of the present study was to elucidate session-specific effects of a group therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) that targets cognitive biases known as the Metacognitive Training for OCD (MCT-OCD).Method: In an uncontrolled pilot trial, 44 inpatients with OCD participated in the MCT-OCD once a week over four weeks. Before and after each session, patients answered questionnaires on thought monitorin

Transcultural, transdiagnostic, and concurrent validity of a revised metacognitions about symptoms control scale.

Anxiety and depression add to the burden of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia (FM), and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Metacognitions play a role in this distress. The metacognitions about symptoms control scale (MaSCS) measure metacognitive beliefs regarding symptoms but have weaknesses. The current study created a revised MaSCS (MaSCS-R) in English, German, and Arabic versions using CFS, FM, and T1DM samples and examined the transcultural, transdiagnostic, and concurrent validity of metacognitions about symptom control. This study used data from 563 participants clinically diagn…

Are experiences of psychosis associated with unhelpful metacognitive coping strategies? A systematic review of the evidence.

This review investigated whether unhelpful metacognitive coping strategies, such as attentional biases, worry, rumination, and thought control, are associated with experiences of psychosis. These processes, known collectively as the Cognitive Attentional Syndrome (CAS), form a central tenet of the Self-Regulatory Executive Function model. Three research questions based on assumptions underlying the CAS were addressed. It was predicted that processes of (a) self-focused processing, (b) negative perseverative thinking (worry and rumination), and (c) counterproductive thought control would be ass

Stop Saying That It Is Wrong! Psychophysiological, Cognitive, and Metacognitive Markers of Children's Sensitivity to Punishment.

Neurodevelopmental evidence suggests that children's main decision-making strategy is to avoid options likely to induce punishment. However, the cognitive and affective factors contributing to children's avoidance to high punishment frequency remain unknown. The present study explored psychophysiological, cognitive, and metacognitive processes associated with sensitivity to punishment frequency. We evaluated 54 participants (between 8 and 15 years old) with a modified Iowa Gambling Task for children (IGT-C) which included options with varying long-term profit and punishment frequencies. Metacognitive interpersonal therapy for co-occurrent avoidant personality disorder and substance abuse.

Many patients with substance abuse problems present with co-occurrent cluster C personality disorders. Focusing on both disorders disrupts the maintenance mechanisms and the vicious cycle between the 2 conditions; however, treatment teams often neglect this issue. In this work, we describe the features of metacognitive interpersonal therapy as applied to a man with avoidant and depressive personality disorders and heroin, cocaine, and alcohol abuse. Psychotherapy proceeded through the following steps: (a) conducting drug therapy to deal with symptoms of abstinence from heroin; (b) forming a th
