Levels of lead and other metals in human blood: suggestive relationships, determining factors.

Epidemiological studies on metal levels in blood were carried out. Evidence suggested the existence of a different trend in serum-iron levels in relation to blood lead levels in nonoccupationally exposed males (negative trend) and females (positive trend). There was a positive relation between blood lead levels and blood manganese levels in children and occupationally exposed male workers. Blood metal levels increased with age in young children. There was evidence for an influence of socioeconomic class on blood lead levels in children. A direct and an indirect effect of smoking was found on b

Association between night-shift work and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in Japanese male indoor workers: a cross-sectional study.

Although low vitamin D status resulting from night work is a suspected cause of various health disorders, few studies have investigated the association between night-shift work and vitamin D status. Here, we examined serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels in 19 Japanese indoor workers, including night-shift workers, in blood samples collected at the annual medical checkup (late July) in a metal tool factory. Analyses were finally restricted to 14 male workers (33-59 yr) in 3 groups: fixed daytime work (n=6), and rotating shift work with (n=4) and without (n=4) night shifts. No significant di

Monitoring neurotoxins in industry: development of a neurobehavioral test battery.

To facilitate the early detection of neurotoxicity in workers exposed to hazardous substances, we assembled a set of noninvasive neurobehavioral tests designed to assess memory, verbal concept formation, visuomotor performance, and mood. The tests were administered to an unexposed reference population and multivariate prediction equations were developed to control for effects of age, gender, and education. To define the briefest test set with appropriate sensitivity and specificity, we applied factor analysis and stepwise logistic regression to data from our referents and a group of lead-expos

A study of subjective visual disturbances in jewellery manufacturing.

Subjective Visual Disturbances are silent adversaries that appear over a period of continued exposure and arise when the visual demands of the tasks exceed the visual abilities of the user. Jewellery manufacturing activity involves precision designs, setting the metal and stones, polishing and filing which requires higher visual demand. Therefore, it is expected that the jewellery manufacturing workers may experience subjective visual disturbances. This study was taken up with the following objectives 1) To study the presence of subjective visual disturbances among jewellery manufacturing work

Associations between Biomarkers of Metal Exposure and Dry Eye Metrics in Shipyard Welders: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Shipyard welders are often exposed to welding metal fumes. Ocular surfaces are continually exposed to environmental hazards. However, limited information on the associations between metal exposure and dry eye metrics in occupational settings is available. This study employed a cross-sectional design that involved the participation of 59 welders and 25 administrative staff in a shipyard in northern Taiwan from September 2020 to October 2020. The participants' individual information, laboratory data, exposure to particulate matter < 2.5 μm, urinary, and toenail metal concentrations were collecte

Predictive testing of metalworking fluids: a comparison of 2 cumulative human irritation models and correlation with epidemiological data.

Metalworking fluids (MWF) have been reported as being an important cause of irritant contact dermatitis in metal workers. Our purpose was to determine whether the irritancy of different MWF assessed by 2 different types of predictive human in vivo tests could be compared with epidemiological data. 3 water-based MWF were tested in the same panel of subjects. Reactions were assessed by a visual score (VS), evaporimetry to evaluate the transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and chromametry to quantify erythema. Test 1: MWF were applied with Finn Chambers on the volunteers' mid-back, removed after 1 day

Strontium and Lead Accelerate, Calcium Protects: Arterial Stiffness Progression in an 11-Year Prospective Cohort Study.

Arterial stiffness measured by estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV) is an established predictor of cardiovascular disease. Long-term metal exposure may drive arterial stiffness progression, but prior studies largely relied on single-time assessments of exposure or outcome, overlooking heterogeneity in ePWV progression and its longitudinal links to long-term metal exposure. In an 11-year prospective study of 707 participants from the Manganese-Exposed Workers Healthy Cohort, we repeatedly quantified blood cell metals and computed cumulative exposure indices (CEIs). Latent class mixed models ide

Occupational dermatitis in a highly industrialized Italian region: the experience of four occupational health departments.

There is a need for several research centers to carry out coordinated large-scale evaluation of the spread of occupational irritant and allergic dermatitis. The Occupational Health Departments of Bergamo, Brescia, Lecco and Cremona therefore decided to join their experiences and bring together all the cases of occupational irritant and allergic dermatitis diagnosed by these Departments between 1993 and 1998. In this period, 1169 cases of occupational dermatitis were diagnosed, subdivided into 768 cases of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), 337 of irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), 54 of urtica

Reversible color vision loss in occupational exposure to metallic mercury.

Color vision was evaluated in twenty-one mercury exposed workers and referents matched for sex, age, tobacco smoking, and alcohol habits. The Lanthony 15 Hue desaturated panel (D-15 d) was applied. In the workers, mean urinary Hg (HgU) was 115+/-61.5 microg/g creatinine; in all but one the values exceeded the biological limit (BEI) proposed by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. A dose-related subclinical color vision impairment was observed in Hg-exposed workers compared to the referents. Just after the survey, working conditions were improved. Twelve months later t

Urinary beryllium--a suitable tool for assessing occupational and environmental beryllium exposure?

OBJECTIVES: The reasons for the slow progress and lack of new knowledge in the biological monitoring of beryllium (Be) are to be found in the presumed small number of working activities involving exposure to the metal, and the lack of adequate analytical methods. The reference values for urinary Be reported earlier in the literature appear to be too high, due to the poor specificity and sensitivity of the adopted methods. The aim of this study was to correlate Be air concentrations and Be urinary levels to ascertain whether the biological indicator was suitable for assessing occupational expos

Occupational lung cancer risk for men in Germany: results from a pooled case-control study.

Occupational exposures such as crystalline silica, diesel engine exhaust, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and man-made mineral fibers are strongly suspected to increase lung cancer risk. Two case-control studies in Germany conducted between 1988 and 1996 were pooled for a joint analysis. A total of 3,498 male cases and 3,541 male population controls, frequency matched for age and region, were included in the study. The lifelong history of all jobs and industries was coded and occupational exposures were evaluated by expert rating. Odds ratios, crude and adjusted for smoking and asbestos expo

Perforating eye injury in the Stockholm population. An epidemiological study.

We studied the occurrence of perforating eye injury (PEI) during the period 1974-1979 in the population (1.5 million) of Stockholm county. Information was obtained from medical and population registries, medical records and personal interviews. PEI was almost 6 times more common in men than in women, and age specific incidence rates varied from 94.3 per million person years in young men (10-19 years) to 3.9 in elderly women (60-69 years). The risk appeared somewhat increased in the unmarried, but not in foreign citizens. Most injuries occurred during the day with no less than 54% between 10 a.
