Optimization of artificial neural network models through genetic algorithms for surface ozone concentration forecasting.

INTRODUCTION: This study proposes three methodologies to define artificial neural network models through genetic algorithms (GAs) to predict the next-day hourly average surface ozone (O(3)) concentrations. GAs were applied to define the activation function in hidden layer and the number of hidden neurons. METHODS: Two of the methodologies define threshold models, which assume that the behaviour of the dependent variable (O(3) concentrations) changes when it enters in a different regime (two and four regimes were considered in this study). The change from one regime to another depends on a spe

Influence of waste dump remediation on the levels of mercury in the air.

Mercury concentrations in air were measured at three measuring sites in the vicinity of a waste dump Jakusevec in Zagreb, Croatia over a 4-year period, from the beginning to the end of remediation. Measurements at the beginning of the remediation show that the concentrations of mercury at all three measuring sites were relatively high. Annual mercury mass concentrations in 2001 were between 17 and 445 ng m(-3). Annual mercury averages in 2004 ranged from 8 to 10 ng m(-3). Mercury variations were analysed with regard to the meteorological conditions. The results of this investigation show that

PM2.5 and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ambient air: a focus on the effect of meteorology.

PM(2.5) and VOCs (benzene, toluene, m-p-o-xylenes) concentrations were measured in an urban and a suburban site in Athens, Greece, during the period between April and November 2004. This period, which is considered to be the warmer period in Greece, is characterized by the development of sea-breeze over the Attica Basin. Additionally strong Northern, North-eastern winds called "The Etesians", predominate during the summer months (July-August), acting positively to the dispersion of pollutants. In this campaign, 24 days with sea-breeze development were observed, 15 days with northern winds, 6 d

Can remotely sensed meteorological data significantly contribute to reduce costs of tsetse surveys?

A 0.125 degree raster or grid-based Geographic Information System with data on tsetse, trypanosomiasis animal production, agriculturerkina> and land use has recently been developed in Togo. This paper addresses the problem of generating tsetse distribution and abundance maps from remotely sensed data, using a restricted amount of field data. A discriminant analysis model is tested using contemporary tsetse data and remotely sensed, low resolution data acquired from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and Meteosat platforms. A split sample technique is adopted where a rand

The ecology of malaria--as seen from Earth-observation satellites.

Data from sensors on board geostationary and polar-orbiting, meteorological satellites (Meteosat and NOAA series) are routinely obtained free, via local reception systems, in an increasing number of African countries. Data collected by these satellites are processed to produce proxy ecological variables which have been extensively investigated for monitoring changes in the distribution and condition of different natural resources, including rainfall and vegetation state. How these data products (once incorporated, along with other data, into a geographical information system) could contribute

[Meteorological conditions and spontaneous pneumothorax. Retrospective study of 165 cases in the Rouen area].

The occurrence of a spontaneous "idiopathic" pneumothorax in 165 patients admitted to hospital could be precisely dated over a 5-year period. An analysis of the meteorological conditions recorded at these dates (mean atmospheric pressure, mean temperature, relative and absolute humidity) and of their seasonal distribution demonstrated two peaks of frequency, one in the summer, the other in the winter, and a significant correlation between the occurrence of pneumothorax and a low relative humidity. These results, particularly clear during the exceptionally dry summer of 1976, confirm some data

Effects of meteorological variability on the burden of musculoskeletal disorders among people aged 55 and above in the United States: a secondary analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Older adults in high-income countries face an increasing burden of musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders. Although the belief that meteorological variations influence musculoskeletal conditions is widespread, scientific evidence remains inconclusive. This study aimed to explore these meteorology-health relationships. METHODS: Using publicly available data from the Global Historical Climatology Network Daily, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021, we investigated associations between inter-annual meteorological factors variability (tempera

Risk of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome associated with meteorological factors in diverse epidemic regions: a nationwide longitudinal study in China.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a climate-sensitive zoonotic disease that poses a significant public health burden worldwide. While previous studies have established associations between meteorological factors and HFRS incidence, there remains a critical knowledge gap regarding the heterogeneity of these effects across diverse epidemic regions. Addressing this gap is essential for developing region-specific prevention and control strategies. This study conducted a national investigation to examine the associations between meteorological factors and HFRS in three dis

Meteorological and environmental factors associated with the exposure to tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in cattle, north-eastern France, 2018-2019.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a severe neurological disease that can be transmitted to humans through the bites of infected ticks or the consumption of unpasteurised dairy products from infected but asymptomatic ruminants. The recent detection of food-borne cases in France is a rising concern, since the production and consumption of raw milk cheese is common. There is limited data available on seroprevalence and factors associated with the exposure to TBEV of domestic ungulates in Europe, and to date, such data are not available in France. A total of 4,483 cattle sera were collected

Using empirical dynamic modeling to identify the impact of meteorological factors on hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Weifang, Northeastern China, from 2011 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) continues to pose a significant public health threat to the well-being of the population. Given that the spread of HFRS is susceptible to meteorological factors, we aim to probe into the meteorological drivers of HFRS. Thus, novel techniques that can discern time-delayed non-linear relationships from nonlinear dynamical systems are compulsory. METHODS: We analyze the epidemiological features of HFRS in Weifang City, 2011-2020, via the employment of the Empirical Dynamic Modeling (EDM) method. Our analysis delves into the intricate web o

Long-term air pollution levels modify the relationships between short-term exposure to meteorological factors, air pollution and the incidence of hand, foot and mouth disease in children: a DLNM-based multicity time series study in Sichuan Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have investigated the short-term effects of meteorological factors and air pollution on the incidence of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). Several meteorological indicators, such as relative humidity and the diurnal temperature range (DTR), significantly modify the relationship between short-term exposure to temperature and HFMD incidence. However, it remains unclear whether (and how) long-term air pollution levels modify the short-term relationships of HFMD incidence with meteorological factors and air pollution. METHODS: We obtained daily data on mete

Bayesian spatiotemporal analysis for association of environmental factors with hand, foot, and mouth disease in Guangdong, China.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) remains a significant public health and economic burden in parts of China, particularly Guangdong Province. Although the association between meteorological factors and HFMD has been well documented, significant gaps remain in our understanding of the potential impact of environmental factors. Using county-level monthly HFMD data from China CDC and environmental data from multiple sources, we used spatiotemporal Bayesian models to evaluate the association between HFMD and environmental factors including vegetation index, proportion of artificial surface, roa

The association between the incidence of mumps and meteorological parameters in Taiwan.

Mumps is caused by a paramyxovirus. It is an acute, but mild infectious disease. However, approximately 10% of patients with mumps can develop severe meningoencephalitis, disability, and death. Seasonal patterns in mumps vary across countries, but the reasons for this phenomenon remain unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the role of meteorological factors on mumps infection. We investigated the relationships between weather variability and the incidence of mumps in Taiwan using a Poisson regression analysis and case-crossover methodology. Between 2006 and 2011, 6,612 cases of mumps we

Non-Linear Association between Exposure to Ambient Temperature and Children's Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Beijing, China.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) was listed as a notifiable communicable disease in 2008 and is an emerging public health problem in China, especially for children. However, few data are available on the risk assessment of the potential reasons for HFMD in Beijing. This study examined the association of temperature with the incidence of children's HFMD in Beijing at the daily scale for the first time. METHODS: A newly developed case-crossover design with a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was used to assess the delayed and cumulative associations of daily temperature with
