Endotheliitis is the inflammation of the corneal endothelium resulting in edema and subsequent loss of vision. Bacterial causes of corneal inflammation primarily of the epithelium with subsequent, secondary involvement of the endothelium have previously been described. Notably, however, there are no reports of isolated endotheliitis related to a bacterial pathogen. We report, for the first time, a case of corneal endotheliitis associated with a pyogenic liver abscess caused by methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Treatment targeting the underlying source of infection led to visu

BACKGROUND: Postneurosurgical infection (PNSI) is a major problem. Linezolid is a bacteriostatic oxazolidinone antibiotic with a highly activity against Gram-positive cocci resistant to methicillin and a good cerebrospinal fluid penetration. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of linezolid in the treatment of PNSI caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (MRS).
METHODS: We conducted an observational study for all patients over 14 years old and diagnosed with MRS PNSI. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory information were collected prospectively.
RESULTS: A total of 1

Delafloxacin (ABT 492) is a new fluoroquinolone available in both oral and parenteral formulations. It has recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the management of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections. When compared to combination therapy of vancomycin and aztreonam, delafloxacin was not inferior and had a favorable adverse event profile. Furthermore, its anti-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) activity and favorable clinical response in MRSA infections distinguishes it from other fluoroquinolones. This review focuses on the mode of action,

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the most successful modern pathogens. The same organism that lives as a commensal and is transmitted in both health-care and community settings is also a leading cause of bacteraemia, endocarditis, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections and hospital-acquired infections. Genetically diverse, the epidemiology of MRSA is primarily characterized by the serial emergence of epidemic strains. Although its incidence has recently declined in some regions, MRSA still poses a formidable clinical threat, with persistently hig

Staphylococcus aureus is a versatile pathogen which can cause various mild to life-threatening infectious diseases. The evolution of S. aureus resistance is notorious, from penicillin and oxacillin to vancomycin. Vancomycin, introduced in 1956, was once considered a most reliable antibiotic for methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA); unfortunately, the first strain of S. aureus with decreased susceptibility to vancomycin emerged in 1996. Vancomycin has been approved in Taiwan since 1983, and the prevalence rates of heteroresistant vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (hVISA) and vancomycin-interm

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the earliest bacteria isolated from the respiratory tract in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). Its methicillin resistant form, MRSA, has gained attention due to the rapid increase in the last decades and worse outcomes with chronic infection. In the United States, prevalence of MRSA in CF is around 27%, but is much lower (3-18%) in most other countries. Methicillin is typically genetically encoded by the mecA gene, which encodes for an alternative penicillin binding protein (PRBa). This PRBa has low affinity to β-lactams, thereby enabling growth of S. aureus in

Milk and dairy foods have frequently been implicated in staphylococcal food poisoning, and contaminated raw milk is often involved. The aim of the study was to determine the occurrence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in raw cow milk cheese produced in Mexico. A total of 78 unpasteurized cow milk cheese samples were screened for S. aureus. The isolates were identified as S. aureus based on morphology, Gram stain, catalase test, coagulase test, and mannitol salt agar fermentation. Isolates were subjected to biotyping, the methicillin resistance was analyzed using the disk d

INTRODUCTION: Fluoroquinolone resistance in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has increased in recent years. The objective of this study was to characterise two MRSA populations, one susceptible to fluoroquinolones and other resistant identifying the clonal types and the differential characteristics of both MRSA populations.
METHODS: Molecular typing using PFGE, MLST, spa and SSCmec was performed on 192 MRSA strains isolated from 2009 to 2011, 49 only oxacillin-resistant (OX-R) and 143 oxacillin and levofloxacin-resistant (OX-R-LEV-R). Mutations that conferred resistance to f

Bacterial sepsis is a major killer in hospitalized patients. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) with the leading species Staphylococcus epidermidis are the most frequent causes of nosocomial sepsis, with most infectious isolates being methicillin-resistant. However, which bacterial factors underlie the pathogenesis of CNS sepsis is unknown. While it has been commonly believed that invariant structures on the surface of CNS trigger sepsis by causing an over-reaction of the immune system, we show here that sepsis caused by methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis is to a large extent mediated by

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has been a clinically significant pathogen in orthopaedics for more than a decade. Research shows that these infections are more virulent and that treatment requires greater use of hospital resources. A multidisciplinary approach involving emergency department physicians, radiologists, interventional radiologists, MRI technicians, pediatricians, infectious disease specialists, anesthesiologists, and orthopaedic surgeons is necessary to optimize outcomes and minimize costs. Early use of MRI helps delineate the extent of infection, aids in the consider

High-level resistance to β-lactam antibiotics in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is due to expression of penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a), a transpeptidase that catalyzes cell-wall crosslinking in the face of the challenge by β-lactam antibiotics. The activity of this protein is regulated by allostery at a site 60 Å distant from the active site, where crosslinking of cell wall takes place. This review discusses the state of knowledge on this important enzyme of cell-wall biosynthesis in MRSA.

A 24-day-old boy presented with fever, irritability and poor feeding. Blood culture grew methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed pleocytosis, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus grew from enrichment broth. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an epidural abscess extending from C2-3 to T8-9. Staphylococcal infections of the central nervous system are uncommon in neonates. This case demonstrates the importance of performing a lumbar puncture in isolated staphylococcal bacteraemia. The case also highlights that cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis ma

BACKGROUND: The best strategy for active surveillance for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) remains unclear. We attempted to identify a risk factor score to predict MRSA colonization at hospital admission.
METHODS: Data on 9 variables reported as risk factors for MRSA colonization were analyzed, and a risk factor score to predict MRSA colonization was generated using multivariable logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve analyses. This risk score was then prospectively validated.
RESULTS: Four risk factors (nursing home residence, diabetes, hospitaliza

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an important causative agent in myositis and pyomyositis, but its involvement in quadriceps tendon tears has not been reported until now. In the case reported here, accurate diagnosis was delayed because of the unique presentation, and the infection was mismanaged with corticosteroids because of the presumptive diagnosis of an inflammatory pathology. Subsequently, aggressive surgical and antibiotic management produced a satisfactory outcome. Early detection and appropriate management of these infections are extremely important in preventing

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a leading cause of infections in hospitals, and mortality from MRSA bacteremia is high. In this study, we assessed the clinical characteristics and optimum management of 115 patients with MRSA bacteremia who were admitted to Osaka University Hospital between January 2006 and December 2010. Sixty-nine of the patients survived and 46 died of heart failure or renal failure. The nonsurvivors had reduced levels of platelets and albumin, and increased aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine levels.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has recently emerged as a cause of community-acquired infections among individuals without risk factors. Community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) appears to be more virulent, causing superficial mild skin and soft tissue infections to severe necrotizing fasciitis, and in rare cases, pneumonia. Community-associated MRSA was first reported in Australia in the early 80s, after almost two decades in the USA, and then in several countries in Europe, Asia and South America. No data exists in Portugal. We report the first case of CA-MRSA infection in Port
