In this study, total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in muscles (leg and breast), organs (intestine, heart, stomach, liver) and blood were investigated for backyard chickens, ducks and geese of the Wanshan Mercury Mine, China. THg in poultry meat products range from 7.9 to 3917.1 ng/g, most of which exceeded the Chinese national standard limit for THg in meat (50 ng/g). Antipersonnel blast landmines pose a significant threat in affected areas, with injuries to the lower extremity and amputation being common. Addressing a need for injury prediction and protection evaluation, a 50th percentile physical surrogate lower leg was developed incorporating the load transmission paths in the lower leg. Biofidelic and frangible materials were evaluated and selected based on high deformation rate properties compared to those for human tissues. The predicted leg injuries from experimental blast testing were in agreement with injury data for unprotected and protected legs.

This series comprises 191 victims injured by antipersonnel land mines in the North-east of Sri Lanka. The pattern of mine injuries is described and the injuries to the lower limb are classified according to the level of injury. Injuries to the lower limb were the commonest and over 73% required a below knee amputation. Recommendations are made for the improved care of these victims. The socio-economic effects of mines experienced by other countries affected by internal conflicts are described. The preventive measures that could be taken to avert such a situation in Sri Lanka are stressed.

Morphological studies on massive pulmonary fibrosis due to pneumoconiosis in 42 cases were performed. The cases were divided into two types: the coalescence of fibrotic nodules type and the progressive massive fibrosis type. The former includes fusion of simple silica or coal-silica nodules and coalescence of mainly coal-silico-tubercle nodules. Taconite is a low-grade iron ore consisting of iron, quartz, and numerous silicates. Taconite from the eastern tip of the Mesabi Iron Range contains the amphibole silicate cummingtonite-grunerite, which is a mineral relative of amosite asbestos. Twelve different groups of fine mine dusts were examined for their in vivo aggressivity by intraperitoneal injection.
