To Be Bicultural Is to Be Friends? Associating Early Adolescents' Cultural Identities and Behaviors With Friendship Networks in Minority-Only Schools.

Many ethnic minoritized adolescents attend minority-only schools with no ethnic majoritized classmates, but we know little about their acculturation and friendships in such settings. This study examined how early adolescents' heritage and mainstream cultural identities and behaviors associated with friendship ties in minority-only class networks. Early adolescents (N = 146, Mage = 11.24, 54.4% boys) in minority-only primary schools reported their heritage and mainstream cultural identities and behaviors and completed a sociometric measure of their friendship networks. Visual Difficulty, Race and Ethnicity, and Activity Limitation Trajectories Among Older Adults in the United States: Findings From the National Health and Aging Trends Study.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the influence of visual difficulty on activity limitation trajectories in older U.S. adults and investigate whether this varied across racial/ethnic groups. METHODS: We used data from 8,077 participants in the nationally representative National Health and Aging Trends Study from 2011 to 2019. Using mixed-effects regression models, we investigated the association of self-reported visual difficulty and race/ethnicity with activity limitation trajectories. RESULTS: Higher levels of visual difficulty and belonging to a minority racial/ethnic group were associated with

Approaches to increase access to community-based infectious disease control for ethnically, racially, and religiously marginalised populations: a scoping review.

Marginalised populations often have reduced access to infectious disease prevention interventions, and as a result of this and other socioeconomic factors, these populations are at a higher risk of disease. Here, we reviewed the literature of community-based interventions delivered at the individual level across multiple diseases, and focused on how to increase access to infectious disease interventions for ethnically, racially, and religiously marginalised populations. Most of the included studies only focused on a single disease and used quantitative descriptive methods. We noted the lack of

Considerations of race and ethnicity within rehabilitation studies for post COVID-19 condition: A scoping review.

Post COVID-19 condition (PCC) or long COVID disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minority communities. There are a growing number of rehabilitation studies for PCC, however, it has yet to be determined whether existing studies take race and ethnicity into account in their study designs and whether existing rehabilitative approaches are equally effective across diverse racial and ethnic groups. The objective of this study was to describe the extent to which rehabilitation studies of PCC consider race and ethnicity in defining eligibility criteria, planning recruitment strategies, design

Exploring the Engagement of Racial and Ethnic Minorities in HIV Treatment and Vaccine Clinical Trials: A Scoping Review of Literature and Implications for Future Research.

HIV disproportionately impacts US racial and ethnic minorities but they participate in treatment and vaccine clinical trials at a lower rate than whites. To summarize barriers and facilitators to this participation we conducted a scoping review of the literature guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies published from January 2007 and September 2019 were reviewed. Thirty-one articles were identified from an initial pool of 325 records using three coders. All records were then assessed for barriers and facilitators and summarize

Reactivity to social stress in ethnic minority men.

Repeated exposures to social exclusion, through a process of sensitization, may result in larger responses to experiences of social stress. The current study tested the hypothesis that healthy Moroccan-Dutch men respond stronger to social stress than Dutch controls 1) in daily life, and 2) in an experimental set-up. A general population sample of 50 Moroccan-Dutch and 50 Dutch young adult males were tested with 1) the Experience Sampling Method, a structured diary technique, assessing reactivity to social stress in daily life, and 2) an experimental exposure to social peer evaluation. No group

Minority stressors and tobacco use among a US sample of sexual and gender minority young adults.

INTRODUCTION: Young adults who are sexual and gender minorities (SGM) are at the highest risk for tobacco initiation in young adulthood. Minority stress theory suggests that sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI)-based discrimination may contribute to nicotine and tobacco use disparities. Our study aimed to quantify the association between SOGI-based distal minority stressors and current tobacco use among SGM young adults living in the United States (US). METHODS: Eligible participants-including young adults (aged 18-35 years old), who identified as SGM, and were currently residing in

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Mpox Cases and Vaccination Among Adult Males - United States, May-December 2022.

As of December 31, 2022, a total of 29,939 monkeypox (mpox) cases* had been reported in the United States, 93.3% of which occurred in adult males. During May 10-December 31, 2022, 723,112 persons in the United States received the first dose in a 2-dose mpox (JYNNEOS)† vaccination series; 89.7% of these doses were administered to males (1). The current mpox outbreak has disproportionately affected gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and racial and ethnic minority groups (1,2). To examine racial and ethnic disparities in mpox incidence and vaccination rates, rate ratios (RRs…

Changing socio-economic and ethnic disparities in influenza/A/H1N1 infection early in the 2009 UK epidemic: a descriptive analysis.

BACKGROUND: Higher incidence of and risk of hospitalisation and death from Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 during the 2009 pandemic was reported in ethnic minority groups in many high-income settings including in the United Kingdom (UK). Many of these studies rely on geographical and temporal aggregation of cases and can be difficult to interpret due to the spatial and temporal factors in outbreak spread. Further, it can be challenging to distinguish between disparities in health outcomes caused by variation in transmission risk or disease severity. METHODS: We used anonymised laboratory confirmed and…

Minority stress mediates associations of sexual minority state policies and tobacco use among US sexual minority young adults.

INTRODUCTION: State policies surrounding sexual minority (SM) rights are associated with tobacco use among SM individuals. Research is scant regarding the role of distinct SM policy categories on SM young adults' (SMYAs) tobacco use and mechanisms explaining these associations. METHODS: We analyzed 2023 survey data from 1100 SMYAs (ages 18-34; 14.2 % gender minority; 66.1 % bisexual+, 29.1 % monosexual; 53.2 % racial/ethnic minority) with representation across 45 US states and DC. Regression-based models examined: 1) direct associations of residing in states with negative and limited (vs. com

COVID-19 Deaths and Minority Health Social Vulnerability, in the U.S., January 1, 2020 through June 24, 2023.

BACKGROUND: Health disparities, leading to worse health outcomes such as elevated COVID-19 mortality rates, are rooted in social and structural factors. These disparities notably impact individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and more socially vulnerable areas. We analyzed the relationship between COVID-19 deaths and social vulnerability using the Minority Health Social Vulnerability Index (MHSVI). METHODS: COVID-19 death data in the U.S. was obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics, where COVID-19 deaths were defined us

Identifying demographics of high risk male and LGBTQ+ survivors of domestic abuse from acute London hospital referrals - case review.

BACKGROUND: Heterosexual men, and lesbians, gay men, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people are under-described in research and resources relating to domestic abuse (DA), compared to heterosexual cisgender female survivors. Many of the identified DA cases within our hospital organisation that warrant onward multidisciplinary referral, due to ongoing high harm risk, are for male and LGBTQ+ survivors. We aimed to describe demographics and risk patterns of these cases, to inform and equip our specialist Independent Domestic Violence Advocacy (IDVA) service. METHOD: We performed a retros

Ethnicity classification systems for public health surveys: experiences from HIV behavioural surveillance among men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Race and ethnicity classification systems have considerable implications for public health, including the potential to reveal or … alth inequities. Future research should strive for equal explanatory power of Indigenous and ethnic minority groups and examine additional measures such as socially-assigned ethnicity and experiences of discrimination and racism. These findings have broad implications for surveillance and research that is used to inform public health responses.

Intimate Partner Violence and Illicit Substance Use Among Sexual and Gender Minority Youth: The Protective Role of Cognitive Reappraisal.

Sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) disproportionately experience intimate partner violence (IPV) and report illicit substance use compared with cisgender heterosexual youth. Cognitive reappraisal strategies have been shown to decrease trauma-exposed individuals' likelihood of engaging in substance use. However, virtually no research has examined the relationship between various forms of IPV, including identity abuse, and illicit substance use, as well as the protective role of cognitive reappraisal among IPV-exposed SGMY. The current study addressed these limitations and examined cognitiv
