Glaucoma is a painful and often blinding group of ocular diseases for which there is no cure. Although the definition of glaucoma is rapidly evolving, elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) remains the most consistent risk factor of glaucoma in the canine patient. Therapy should be aimed at neuroprotection. The mainstay of therapy focuses on reducing IOP and maintaining a visual and comfortable eye. This article discusses the most current ocular hypotensive agents, focusing on their basic pharmacology, efficacy at lowering IOP, and recommended use in the treatment of idiopathic canine glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To report changes in angle configuration associated with dark, light, and pilocarpine administration in plateau iris syndrome.
METHOD: In 10 eyes of 10 patients with plateau iris syndrome and persistent narrow angles after patent peripheral Nd:YAG laser iridotomy, ultrasound biomicroscopy was used to image variations in angle opening, iris thickness, and trabecular-ciliary process distance. The mechanisms of the secondary glaucomas and the actions and side effects of antiglaucoma drugs are reviewed. Based on these observations, the advantages of timolol, as compared to other medications, in the management of secondary glaucomas are discussed. To illustrate some of these advantages, a study is reported in which timolol is evaluated for control of the early intraocular pressure elevation after routine cataract surgery.

We report the case of a 32-year-old male with spontaneous crystalline lens dislocation into the anterior chamber with corneal touch and increased intraocular pressure. The case was handled in a conservative way: before bringing the patient to supine position, pharmacological pupil dilation with tropicamide plus phenylephrine was performed. One drop was instilled every 15 min for 1 hour. Once the posterior displacement of the lens behind the iris was confirmed, 2 % pilocarpine was used to reverse pupil dilation. The patient remained on topical 2 % pilocarpine and 5 % sodium chloride solution.

The potentiality of interaction of chlorpromazine hydrochloride (CPZ) with beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) was investigated by spectrophotometry, vapour pressure osmometry and DSC thermograms. The results revealed a very strong evidence for molecular interaction between CPZ and beta-CD.
