Demodex spp. Infestation Associated with Treatment-Resistant Chalazia and Folliculitis.

Demodecidosis is an ectoparasitosis of pilosebaceous unit caused by demodex mites. The disease may be a primary skin disease or a secondary disease to inflammatory dermatoses such as folliculitis and rosacea. Demodex spp. blepharitis is an infectious ocular disease that is common but always neglected. These mites contain lipase enzymes that help carry bacteria on the surface. The infestation of Demodex spp. has increasingly become a public health concern. A 29-year-old male patient was admitted to our dermatology clinic with a complaint of papules and pustules on his face, which started 4 year

Herbivory-associated degradation of tomato trichomes and its impact on biological control of Aculops lycopersici.

Tomato plants have their leaves, petioles and stems covered with glandular trichomes that protect the plant against two-spotted spider mites and many other herbivorous arthropods, but also hinder searching by phytoseiid mites and other natural enemies of these herbivores. This trichome cover creates competitor-free and enemy-free space for the tomato russet mite (TRM) Aculops lycopersici (Acari: Eriophyidae), being so minute that it can seek refuge and feed inbetween the glandular trichomes on tomato cultivars currently used in practice. Indeed, several species of predatory mites tested for bi

Host immune responses to the itch mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, in humans.

Scabies is a parasitic disease due to infestation of skin by the burrowing mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Scabies is a major public health problem and endemic in resource poor communities worldwide affecting over 100 million people. Associated bacterial infections cause substantial morbidity, and in severe cases can lead to renal and cardiac diseases. Mite infestation of the skin causes localised cutaneous inflammation, pruritus, skin lesions, and allergic and inflammatory responses are mounted by the host against the mite and its products. Our current understanding of the immune and inflammatory res

A survey of vector-borne bacteria in bat-associated mites (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae and Spinturnicidae) from Brazil reveals the presence of Ehrlichia spp.

Macronyssid and spinturnicid mites are globally distributed ectoparasites of medical and veterinary relevance, with various species known to parasitize bats. Beyond their ecological importance, some macronyssid mites, such as Ornithonyssus bursa, are known to occasionally bite humans and cause dermatitis, highlighting the interface between wildlife, ectoparasites, and human habitats. Understanding the microorganisms harbored by bat-associated mites is therefore important from a One Health perspective, as these arthropods may act as bridge hosts for pathogens among bats, domestic animals, and h

Immunology and pathogenesis of canine demodicosis.

Demodex mites colonized the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of mammals millions of years ago and have remained relatively unchanged in this protected ecologic niche since then. The host immune system detects and tolerates their presence. Toll-like receptor-2 of keratinocytes has been demonstrated to recognize mite chitin and to elicit an innate immune response. The subsequent acquired immune response is poorly understood at present, but there is experimental and clinical evidence that this is the main mechanism in the control of mite proliferation. A transgenic mouse model (STAT(-/-) /CD28

Five observations of a third morphologically distinct feline Demodex mite.

BACKGROUND: Feline demodicosis is caused by infestation with Demodex cati and/or Demodex gatoi. These two mites have distinctive morphological appearances. OBJECTIVES: To describe five observations of a morphologically distinct feline Demodex mite in 10 cats. All cats were in or adopted from an animal shelter. RESULTS: A mite with blunted ends longer than D. gatoi but shorter than D. cati was observed in one or multiple cats from animal shelters. Mean mite size was 139 ± 4.5 μm (n = 41 mites). Similar features among the cases included a history of recent recovery or presence of concurrent il

Presence-absence sequential sampling plan for northern fowl mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Acari: Macronyssidae), on caged-layer hens.

Caged-layer hens were scored as infested or uninfested by visual examination of the vent region, and the number of northern fowl mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini & Fanzago), per hen was estimated. The proportion infested and average number of mites per hen were shown to have a highly significant, positive relationship (r = 0.936). Sampling among houses within a flock, and rows and sections within houses were analyzed to determine the reliability of sampling a representative portion of a flock. Low- and moderate-tolerance treatment thresholds, based on percentage of hens infested with

Thalassornectes (Alcidectes) aukletae, new subgenus and species (Acari: Hypoderatidae) from the crested and parakeet auklets (Aves: Charadriiformes; Alcidae).

In the genus Thalassornectes, a new subgenus, Alcidectes, and a new species, T. (Alcidectes) aukletae, are described from deutonymphs in the subcutaneous adipose tissue of the crested auklet, Aethia cristatella (Pallas), and the parakeet auklet, Cyclorrhynchus psittacula (Pallas), from the eastern Pacific USSR. The new subgenus and species differ from one or both of the single species in each of the other two subgenera, Thalassornectes and Rallidectes, by (1) the normal size, position, and parallel arrangement of the genital papillae; (2) the larger size of seta sce; (3) the greater length and

Humoral and cellular immunoresponsiveness of stanchioned cattle infested with Psoroptes ovis.

Bovine scabies in a clinical problem during the cool autumn and cold winter months. In south Texas it is necessary to stanchion animals in order to elicit patent infestation during summer months. Environmental factors and grooming have been purported to account for summer resistance to infestation. However, stanchioned animals exhibit varied levels of susceptibility to infestation, suggesting that the noted variability may be influenced by the host immune response. In this study, animals were infested with Psoroptes ovis while in stanchions. The development of anti-P. ovis antibody activity wa

Risk factors associated with the presence of Varroa destructor in honey bee colonies from east-central Argentina.

Varroa destructor is considered one of the major threats for worldwide apiculture. Damage caused by varroa mite includes body weight loss, malformation and weakening of the bees. It was also suggested as the main cause associated with colony winter mortality and as an important vector for several honey bee viruses. Little is known about multiple factors and their interaction affecting V. destructor prevalence in apiaries from South America. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors associated with V. destructor prevalence in east-central Argentina. Parasitic mite infestation level and

Efficacy of a spot-on combination product containing selamectin and sarolaner (Stronghold® Plus) in the treatment of naturally occurring Notoedres cati infestations in cats.

Notoedric mange (also known as feline scabies) is a highly contagious and intensely pruritic dermatologic condition of cats caused by infestation with Notoedres cati mites. Previous publications provide evidence that topical selamectin, and more recently, topical selamectin + sarolaner is efficacious in the treatment of notoedric mange in cats. The study reported here was conducted to confirm the efficacy of a topically applied combination of selamectin and sarolaner (Stronghold® Plus) in the treatment of notoedric mange in cats naturally infested with N. cati. Client-owned cats with clinical

Are Dispersal Mechanisms Changing the Host-Parasite Relationship and Increasing the Virulence of Varroa destructor (Mesostigmata: Varroidae) in Managed Honey Bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Colonies?

Varroa (Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman) are a serious pest of European honey bees (Apis mellifera L.), and difficult to control in managed colonies. In our 11-mo longitudinal study, we applied multiple miticide treatments, yet mite numbers remained high and colony losses exceeded 55%. High mortality from varroa in managed apiaries is a departure from the effects of the mite in feral colonies where bees and varroa can coexist. Differences in mite survival strategies and dispersal mechanisms may be contributing factors. In feral colonies, mites can disperse through swarming. In managed a

Effective treatment with afoxolaner (NexGard) of Trixacarus caviae in a pet guinea pig.

Trixacarus caviae is a sarcoptic mange mite infesting guinea pigs. Infestation in immunosuppressed animals produces severe dermatological problems, including alopecia, intense pruritus, hyperkeratosis and non-dermatological issues (e.g., seizures). Treatment options are limited and include topical application of macrocyclic lactones or amitraz or injectable administration of ivermectin or doramectin. Considering the severity of the disease and the challenging treatment, the present paper aimed to determine the efficacy of oral afoxolaner in a severe case of infestation with T. caviae in a pet

Species- and density-dependent induction of volatile organic compounds by three mite species in cassava and their role in the attraction of a natural enemy.

Upon damage by herbivores, plants induce an array of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that mediate ecological interactions involving commun … scriminated between the odors of uninfested and T. urticae-damaged plants. Our findings reveal that mite infestations in cassava result in density-dependent and species-specific emission of VOCs, and that N. idaeus relies on associative learning to forage for its prey.

A technique for quantitative evaluation of ectoparasitic mites and insects of domestic animals.

A modified KOH dissolution technique using Tween 80 has been developed for the diagnosis and quantitative evaluation of ectoparasitic mites and insects of veterinary importance. Fifty intact skin segments from ten different domestic animals were artificially inoculated in vitro with ten specimens each of the mites Sarcoptes scabiei, Chorioptes bovis, Psoroptes ovis and Demodex caprae and insects Haematopinus eurysternus and Bovicola bovis. Sixty-seven to 88% of the mites and 80-99% of the insects were recovered by this technique. Using this method, parasitic mites and insects were found and id

A Report of Chigger Mites on the Striped Field Mouse, Apodemus agrarius, in Southwest China.

Based on the field investigations in 91 investigation sites (counties) in southwest China between 2001 and 2019, the present paper reported the chigger mites on A. agrarius mice in southwest China for the first time by using a series of statistical methods. From 715 striped field mice captured in 28 of 91 investigated sites, only 255 chiggers were collected, and they were identified as 14 species, 6 genera in 3 subfamilies under 2 families. Of 715 A. agrarius mice, only 24 of them were infested with chigger mites with low overall prevalence (PM=3.4%), overall mean abundance (MA=0.36 mites/host
