BACKGROUND: Mitral valve prolapse syndrome (MVPS) and MASS phenotype (MASS) are Marfan-like syndromes that exhibit aortic dilatation and mitral valve prolapse. Unlike in Marfan syndrome (MFS), the presence of ectopia lentis and aortic aneurysm preclude diagnosis of MVPS and MASS. However, it is unclear whether aortic dilatation and mitral valve prolapse remain stable in MVPS or MASS or whether they progress like in MFS.
METHODS: This retrospective longitudinal observational study examines clinical characteristics and long-term prognosis of 44 adults with MVPS or MASS (18 men, 26 women aged 38…

Two-dimensional echocardiograms were performed in 30 patients with mitral valve prolapse (15 females and 15 males, with an average of 33.3). The main objective was to observe the prevalence of involvement of tricuspid and aortic valves. Tricuspid valve prolapse was observed in 43.3% with anterior and septal involvement in 92.3% and posterior involvement in 15.3%. The incidence of aortic prolapse was 10% with involvement of both right coronary and non-coronary leaflets. All patients with aortic valve prolapse showed involvement of both mitral leaflets and at least two tricuspid leaflets. It is …

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is the leading cause of mitral valve surgery. Echocardiography is the principal imaging modality used to diagnose MVP, assess the mitral valve morphology and mitral annulus dynamics, and quantify mitral regurgitation. Three-dimensional (3D) echocardiographic (3DE) imaging represents a consistent innovation in cardiovascular ultrasound in the last decades, and it has been implemented in routine clinical practice for the evaluation of mitral valve diseases. The focus of this review is the role and the advantages of 3DE in the comprehensive evaluation of MVP, intraoper…

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) has a prevalence of 2-3% among the population. It involves a heterogeneous group of patients with different expressions and according to the phenotype can be further divided into fibroelastic deficiency, which is mainly considered as a degeneration due to aging, and myxomatous disease, frequently associated with familiar clusters. Thus, MVP can be present in syndromic, when part of a well-defined syndrome, and non-syndromic forms. The latter occurs more often. To the second belong both familiar and isolated or sporadic forms. On one hand, among familial forms, altho…

We investigated whether there is an association between anxiety disorders and mitral valve prolapse. We compared mitral valve prolapse prevalence in individuals with panic disorder (n = 41), social anxiety disorder (n = 89) and in healthy controls (n = 102) in an attempt to overcome the biases of previous studies. Our results show no associations between panic disorder or social anxiety disorder and mitral valve prolapse, regardless of the diagnostic criteria employed, and that the relationship between these conditions seems not to be clinically relevant.

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP), an abnormal displacement into the left atrium of a thickened and redundant mitral valve during systole, is a relatively frequent abnormality in humans and may be associated with serious complications. A recent study implicates fibrillin-1, a component of extracellular matrix microfibrils, in the pathogenesis of a murine model of MVP. This investigation represents an initial step toward understanding the mechanisms involved in human MVP disease and the development of potential treatments.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the excellent operative procedure to treat mitral valve prolapse (MVP).
METHODS: Fifty seven patients with MVP were divided into three groups: Group I received traditional chordal reconstruction; Group II underwent chordal replacement using expanded polytetrafluorethylene(e-PTFE) sutures and artificial ring valvuloplasty reconstruction; Group III submitted mitral valve replacement.
RESULTS: Mitral regurgitation volume was reduced significantly in Group II [(1.3 +/- 3.8) ml] and Group III [(1.2 +/- 3.4) ml] than that in Group I [(4.7 +/- 7.7) ml] (P < 0.05).

Respiratory function was studied in 9 patients with mitral prolapse because of myxomatous degeneration of valvular cusps. Respiratory disorders were diagnosed in 7 of them. Respiratory organ abnormalities in cusp prolapses result from hereditary deficiency of the connective tissue with visceral manifestations. Valvular cusp prolapse and their myxomatous degeneration may serve as markers of impairment of the respiratory organs and other viscera related to "weakness" of the connective tissue.
