Distinguishing Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy From Mimic Disorders: The Role of Statistical Modeling.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is difficult to distinguish from mimicking disorders, with misdiagnosis resulting in IVIG overutilization. We evaluate a clinical-electrophysiological model to facilitate CIDP versus mimic neuropathy prediction. METHODS: Using the European Academy of Neurology/Peripheral Nerve Society (EAN/PNS) 2021 CIDP guidelines we derived 26 clinical and 144 nerve conduction variables. The model was generated and validated utilizing total CIDP (n = 129) and mimics (n = 309); including (1) IgG4-nodopathies; (2) POEMS (pol

A Coupled Statistical and Deterministic Model for Forecasting Climate-Driven Dengue Incidence in Selangor, Malaysia.

The mosquito-borne dengue virus remains a major public health concern in Malaysia. Despite various control efforts and measures introduced by the Malaysian Government to combat dengue, the increasing trend of dengue cases persists and shows no sign of decreasing. Currently, early detection and vector control are the main methods employed to curb dengue outbreaks. In this study, a coupled model consisting of the statistical ARIMAX model and the deterministic SI-SIR model was developed and validated using the weekly reported dengue data from year 2014 to 2019 for Selangor, Malaysia. Previous stu

Morphological Variation of the Mandible in the Orthognathic Population-A Morphological Study Using Statistical Shape Modelling.

The aim of this study was to investigate the value of 3D Statistical Shape Modelling for orthognathic surgery planning. The goal was to objectify shape variations in the orthognathic population and differences between male and female patients by means of a statistical shape modelling method. Pre-operative CBCT scans of patients for whom 3D Virtual Surgical Plans (3D VSP) were developed at the University Medical Center Groningen between 2019 and 2020 were included. Automatic segmentation algorithms were used to create 3D models of the mandibles, and the statistical shape model was built through

Geometric learning and statistical modeling for surgical outcomes evaluation in craniosynostosis using 3D photogrammetry.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Accurate and repeatable detection of craniofacial landmarks is crucial for automated quantitative evaluation of head development anomalies. Since traditional imaging modalities are discouraged in pediatric patients, 3D photogrammetry has emerged as a popular and safe imaging alternative to evaluate craniofacial anomalies. However, traditional image analysis methods are not designed to operate on unstructured image data representations such as 3D photogrammetry. METHODS: We present a fully automated pipeline to identify craniofacial landmarks in real time, and we use

Enhancing central blood pressure accuracy through statistical modeling: A proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive estimation of central blood pressure (BP) may have better prognostic value than brachial BP. The accuracy of central BP is limited in certain populations, such as in females and the elderly. This study aims to examine whether statistical modeling of central BP for clinical and hemodynamic parameters results in enhanced accuracy. METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional analysis of 500 patients who underwent cardiac catheterization. Non-invasive brachial cuff and central BP were measured simultaneously to invasive aortic systolic BP (AoSBP). Central BP was calibrated f

Optimizing the soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) using statistical prediction regions.

The ultimate goal of a one-class classifier like the "rigorous" soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) is to predict with a certain confidence probability, the conformity of future objects with a given reference class. However, the SIMCA model, as currently implemented often suffers from an undercoverage problem, meaning that its observed sensitivity often falls far below the desired theoretical confidence probability, hence undermining its intended use as a predictive tool. To overcome the issue, the most reported strategy in the literature, involves incrementing the nominal confi

Feasibility of a longitudinal statistical atlas model to study aortic growth in congenital heart disease.

Studying anatomical shape progression over time is of utmost importance to refine our understanding of clinically relevant processes. These include vascular remodeling, such as aortic dilation, which is particularly important in some congenital heart defects (CHD). A novel methodological framework for three-dimensional shape analysis has been applied for the first time in a CHD scenario, i.e., bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) disease, the most common CHD. Three-dimensional aortic shapes (n = 94) reconstructed from cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data as surface meshes represented th

Cranial reconstruction evaluation - comparison of European statistical shape model performance on Chinese dataset.

PURPOSE: Morphological variability of the skull is an important consideration for cranioplasty and implant design. Differences in morphology of the skull based on the ethnicity are known. In a previous study we could show the accuracy and benefits of virtual reconstructions based on a statistical shape model (SSM) for neurocranial defects. As the SSM is trained on European data, the question arises how well this model fares when dealing with patients with a different ethnic background. In this study we aim to evaluate the accuracy and applicability of our proposed method when deploying a crani

Micro-CT of the human ossicular chain: Statistical shape modeling and implications for otologic surgery.

The ossicular chain is a middle ear structure consisting of the small incus, malleus and stapes bones, which transmit tympanic membrane vibrations caused by sound to the inner ear. Despite being shown to be highly variable in shape, there are very few morphological studies of the ossicles. The objective of this study was to use a large sample of cadaveric ossicles to create a set of three-dimensional models and study their statistical variance. Thirty-three cadaveric temporal bone samples were scanned using micro-computed tomography (μCT) and segmented. Statistical shape models (SSMs) were the

Survival Probability in Patients with Sickle Cell Anemia Using the Competitive Risk Statistical Model.

The clinical picture of patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA) is associated with several complications some of which could be fatal. The objective of this study is to analyze the causes of death and the effect of sex and age on survival of Brazilian patients with SCA. Data of patients with SCA who were seen and followed at HEMORIO for 15 years were retrospectively collected and analyzed. Statistical modeling was performed using survival analysis in the presence of competing risks estimating the covariate effects on a sub-distribution hazard function. Eight models were implemented, one for eac

Statistical Modelling Outcome of In Vitro Fertilization and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection: A Single Centre Study.

BACKGROUND: Assisted reproductive techniques (ART) have been extensively used to treat infertility. Inaccurate prediction of a couple's fertility often leads to lowered self-esteem for patients seeking ART treatment and causes fertility distress. OBJECTIVE: This prospective study aimed to statistically analyze patient data from a single reproductive medical center over a period of 18 months, and to establish mathematical models that might facilitate accurate prediction of successful pregnancy when ART are used. METHODS: In the present study, we analyzed clinical data prospectively collected

A new method to statistically describe microcatheter tip position in patient-specific aneurysm models.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Evidence on how to select microcatheters to facilitate aneurysm catheterization during coil embolization is sparse. We developed a new method to define microcatheter tip location inside a patient-specific aneurysm model as a 3-dimensional probability map. We hypothesized that precision and accuracy of microcatheter tip positioning depend on catheter tip shape and aneurysmal geometry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Under fluoroscopic guidance two to three operators introduced differently shaped microcatheters (straight, 45°, 90°) into eight aneurysm models targeting the anatomi

Construction of a Statistical Cervical Vertebrae Geometric Model for Children 3-10 Years Old.

Cervical spinal injuries of children in motor vehicle crashes have high morbidity and mortality rates. Cervical vertebrae change rapidly in both size and shape during growth. To accurately assess the risk of spinal injury for children of different ages, it is necessary to understand how the spatial geometric features of vertebrae change with the child's age and neck size. In this study, an innovative semi-automated method was developed that can extract and align geometric points from computed tomography scans to accurately represent complex three-dimensional vertebral geometry. Based on these

Uncovering statistical features of bradycardia severity in premature infants using a point process model.

Premature infants are susceptible to a variety of life-threatening events. Underdeveloped cardiovascular control due to an immature autonomic nervous system can lead to recurrent bradycardias that reduce blood flow and oxygen to critical organs, and result in long-term developmental disabilities or sudden death. In this study, we investigate the use of a novel point process framework to model heart rate dynamics in premature infants, including the full range of bradycardia severity. We find that the lognormal distribution accurately models the R-R interval time series, due to the long-tail nat

Statistical shape model reconstruction with sparse anomalous deformations: Application to intervertebral disc herniation.

Many medical image processing techniques rely on accurate shape modeling of anatomical features. The presence of shape abnormalities challenges traditional processing algorithms based on strong morphological priors. In this work, a sparse shape reconstruction from a statistical shape model is presented. It combines the advantages of traditional statistical shape models (defining a 'normal' shape space) and previously presented sparse shape composition (providing localized descriptors of anomalies). The algorithm was incorporated into our image segmentation and classification software. Evaluati
