BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a rare demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that most often results in selective involvement of the optic nerves and spinal cord. Although most cases are sporadic, several familial cases have been reported. All of those patients have been siblings who experienced disease onset at similar ages. To our knowledge, there has not been a documented case between a mother-daughter pair, nor has there been a reported case in which family members developed the disease at different stages of life.
OBJECTIVES: To illustrate the clinical courses of

Familial occurrence of achalasia cardia is rare. Most associations are among siblings or in monozygotic twins. Parent-child association is even rarer and only six such instances have been reported till date. We report a 29-year-old man with achalasia cardia and his mother who had the same illness two and half years later. Both of them were successfully treated with balloon dilatation.

We describe a second family with mother to son transmission of omodysplasia, a rare skeletal dysplasia characterized by shortened humeri, shortened first metacarpals and craniofacial dysmorphism. The mother in this family had been diagnosed previously with Robinow syndrome; subsequently, her diagnosis was reclassified. Her pregnancy was closely monitored antenatally with serial ultrasound examinations. Delayed ossification of the humerus was noted prenatally. Her son had ambiguous genitalia and similar skeletal manifestations as his mother. A comparison to other known and suspected cases of do

Herpes gestationis (pemphigoid gestationis) is a rare autoimmune disease that appears during pregnancy or in the immediate postpartum period. We report the cases of a mother and neonate with immunofluorescence confirmed herpes gestationis both of whom had extensive cutaneous involvement.

Pregnant women with hyperphenylalaninemia are at high risk of spontaneous abortion and of giving birth to infants with congenital malformations, microcephaly and mental defect. Among mothers whose phenylalaninemia is greater than 1200 mumol/L (20 mg/100 mL), 95% have at least one child with mental retardation. A low phenylalanine diet with a good control of phenylalaninemia, started before conception, reduces this risk, better results being obtained when plasma phenylalanine levels are maintained below 360 mumol/L (6 mg/100 mL) as compared with levels maintained between 360 to 600 mumol/L (6-1…

The assumption is sometimes made that the mother's own home is the most appropriate place for the grieving mother to begin to mourn her loss. For this reason she may be transferred with undue haste. We must ask why this assumption is made and whether the mother participates in the decision to return home. Other's research suggests that the community may not be able to provide the support which the mother needs and may even make excessive demands of her. The midwife's visits to the mother's home provide an important opportunity to care for the mother, although this opportunity may not always be

Historically, the risks associated with drugs in breast milk were not a major clinical concern. The small percentage of infants who were breastfed and the low use of drugs in postpartum women stimulated little interest in studying medication use in the breastfeeding mother. However, explosive growth in the number of new pharmacologic agents, concerns over environmental contaminants, and a significant increase in breastfeeding, dramatically altered the interest in this clinical issue. Providers of health care to women and children often are asked to advise breastfeeding women on the choice and

We report on Poland anomaly in a mother and her daughter. Further family history was negative for abnormalities of the hands or the pectoralis major muscle. A review of published cases of familial Poland anomaly is presented. Implications concerning the possible etiology of familial cases of Poland anomaly are given.

This study is a review of the literature on the influence of epilepsy and antiepileptic medication on the course of pregnancy and the foetus, as well as of the effect of pregnancy on the disease. Antiepileptic treatment is supposedly responsible for the increased rate of abnormal bleeding after delivery. Data on the perinatal mortality of epileptics are conflicting. The offspring of epileptic women are often smaller than normal neonates, indicating retarded growth, and the incidence of malformations is 1.25 times higher. Until now there has been no direct evidence of a teratogenic effect of th
