This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of five measures; including the release of two strains of Trichogramma, Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.). Sweetened B.t. and the environmentally friend insecticide (Tracer®), to manage the grape moth, Lobesia botrana that infested the grape vines c.v. "Thompson seedless " in Egypt severely during the two successive years of 2011 and 2012. In concern to the release of the worldwide, Trichogramma evanescens Westwood., the mean total grape yield ranged from 8.00 to 14.00 ton/fed and from 6.90 to 11.9, in respect to the two seasons and the mean infestation per

Variation in warning colouration is common, despite strong positive frequency-dependent selection favouring the most common morph and may arise from spatially or temporally variable selection or associations with other traits. We investigated the maintenance of warning colour variation in the wood tiger moth, Arctia plantaginis, which shows sexual dimorphism in colouration: two distinct male morphs controlled by a single locus, and continuous variation in female hindwing colour and larval warning signal size. Using whole-genome sequencing of 657 individuals from a laboratory stock derived from

During development of the primary olfactory projection, olfactory receptor axons must sort by odor specificity and seek particular sites in the brain in which to create odor-specific glomeruli. In the moth Manduca sexta, we showed previously that fasciclin II, a cell adhesion molecule in the immunoglobulin superfamily, is expressed by the axons of a subset of olfactory receptor neurons during development and that, in a specialized glia-rich "sorting zone," these axons segregate from nonfasciclin II-expressing axons before entering the neuropil of the glomerular layer. The segregation into fasc

Two different aspects related to the dermatitis caused by the so-called nettling hairs of the larva of the brown-tail moth, Euproctis chrysorrhoea L., are documented. The first part describes the sequence of histopathologic changes associated with the inflammatory process in the human skin induced by epicutaneous application untreated (UT-N) and heat treated (HT-N) nettling hairs. The penetration of untreated and heat treated nettling hairs into the epidermis is evident from their presence in 12 out of 29 UT-N lesions and 5 out of 10 HT-N lesions respectively. The introduction of nettling hair

The pathology and ultrastructure of the reproductive tract of Hz-2V-infected female corn earworm moths, Helicoverpa zea, were studied. The identity of malformed reproductive tissues found in virus-infected moths was determined by examining these tissues in moths that were infected with the virus at different life stages. Malformation of reproductive tissues in the progeny of virus-infected female moths was first observed by 3 days post-pupation (dpp), indicating that virus replication had altered the differentiation of these tissues very early on in their development. The ultrastructure of the

The moth bean is a high-protein food legume. Enzymatic hydrolysates of food proteins demostrate health benefits. Search for diet related food protein hydrolysates is therefore within the scope of functional foods. Present study asertains to produce, screen and identify natural ACE-I inhibitory peptides derived from moth bean seed protein hydrolysates. The extracted protein was hydrolysed using alcalase, chymotrypsin, flavourzyme, papain, pepsin and trypsin respectively. Alcalase achieved the greatest degree of hydrolysis and ACE inhibition. The highest ACE-I inhibitory activity was exhibited b

In many pests, insecticide efficacy is dependent on environmental conditions, including ambient temperature. However, it remains unknown if thermal history alters sub-lethal effects to potentially enhance or reduce pesticide resistance in the false codling moth (FCM), Thaumatotibia leucotreta. Here, using FCM, a pest of economic importance in South Africa infesting several commercial food crops, we report results of sub-lethal exposure to spinetoram, an insecticide that disrupts the nervous system. We investigate whether insecticide efficacy is temperature dependent or perhaps interacts with t

Navel orangeworm (Pyralidae: Amyelois transitella) is a key pest of almonds and pistachios in California. Moths directly infest nuts which leads to reduced crop yield and quality, and infestation can predispose nuts to fungal pathogens that produce aflatoxins. While several integrated pest management strategies have been developed for A. transitella, studies have recently been initiated to explore the use of sterile insect technique (SIT) as an additional control tool. Mass-rearing, sterilization, and transportation methods originally developed for Pectinophora gossypiella (Lepidoptera: Gelech

An innovative approach to ticks and insect pests management is necessary to mitigate the challenges posed by the indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides, which can lead to resistance development and environmental pollution. Despite their great potential, biological control agents have significant manufacturing, application, and stability limitations. Currently, using phytochemicals, biosynthesized nanoparticles, and bioagents to get rid of arthropods might be a good alternative that would make farmers less worried about residues and resistance. The present investigation was carried out to de

We report in this paper that female moths artificially inseminated with cryopreserved sperm (-196 degrees C) could oviposit eggs when the sperm was preserved for 356days, and that the fertilization rate and the number of eggs laid were almost equivalent to those obtained in normally mated moths. The optimal cooling rate for sperm freezing was 5-65 degrees C/min for maintaining a high fertility of sperm. The simple and reliable method of cryopreservation was to put the semen first in a deep freezer at -80 degrees C and thereafter put them in liquid nitrogen. When female moths of 'white 2' egg-c

Gossyplure used to bait field traps at a dose of 50 micrograms admixed with 4-16 milligrams of an antioxidant attracted and captured male pink bollworm moths early in the cotton-growing season (early May) in Israel, whereas 20 milligrams of hexalure plus antioxidant was completely inactive under identical conditions. Although gossyplure without antioxidant was inactivated through decomposition within ten days, the mixtures remained attractive for at least two months; the antioxidant also increased moth catches 2.5 fold. Monitoring data obtained with 3000 gossyplure-baited traps, at one trap pe

Butterflies and moths have been admired for their beauty since ancient times, but even these graceful insects can pose a danger to humans, albeit rarely, mainly because of the stinging toxic hairs on the larval stage of some species. In addition to this, since the 16th century, occasional findings of caterpillars still alive after being expelled by people through vomit or faeces led prominent scientists to consider the possibility that the larvae of some species of butterflies and moths, if accidentally ingested, could survive in the human gastrointestinal tract and cause a true infestation. Adult moths from framily Spingidae (i.e. hawkmoths or sphinx moths) commonly feed on flower nectar through an extended proboscis, often several centimeters in length and longer than the body of the moth. Feeding on a viscous liquid (nectar) through a long and narrow tube is a challenging fluid dynamic problem and the subject of long-running scientific investigation. Here we characterized the relationship between proboscis submergence depth and nectar drinking rate in Manduca sexta hawkmoths. Video recordings of moth feeding bouts were collected and neural networks were used to extract data by

A reliable method is reported for the long-term preservation of ovaries and spermatozoa of the silkworm (Bombyx mori). Three studies are presented. In the first, ovaries were removed from larvae at either 3rd, 4th, or 5th instar, cryopreserved, and stored in liquid nitrogen. Thawed ovaries were transplanted to surgically castrated female larvae at the same or a different developmental stage. The highest percentage of recipient females producing eggs resulted into either 3rd or 4th instar larvae (respectively, 22.1 and 8.7%). Similarly, the highest levels of other measurements of successful cry

The ability to effectively detect changes in susceptibility to insecticides is an integral component of resistance management strategies and is highly dependent upon precision of methods deployed. Between 2013 and 2016, F2 screens were performed for detection of resistance alleles in Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) to emamectin benzoate, chlorantraniliprole, and indoxacarb in major cropping regions of eastern Australia. Resistance to emamectin benzoate was not detected. There were low but detectable levels of survival at discriminating concentrations of chlorantraniliprole and indoxacarb. Allele

The forests of the Saharan Atlas represent the southern edge of the natural range of the Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.). These are exposed to climatic stress in relation to drought and attacks of the pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa Schiff., denoted by CP in the French text). The purpose of our work is to study the variation of the infestation rate by the pine processionary moth and its density with climatic factors and dendrometric parameters. The infestation rate (7.82%) by the pine processionary moth and its density (2.74±2.61nests/tree) were lower in our pine forests

UNLABELLED: Fever is one of the most common reasons for visit in primary care practice. Outbreaks of fever that occur at certain areas in a seasonal manner are usually recognized early by diligent general practitioners in primary care settings. At the community level, in order to tackle seasonal fever outbreaks, prevention and control strategies are widely implemented, targeting the locally prevalent endemic infectious diseases. However, what about seasonal outbreaks of diseases because of non-infectious endemic causes? How well are we aware of this and how prepared are we? In 2006, there was

The intimate details regarding the coevolution of bats and moths have been elucidated over the past 50 years. The bat-moth story began with the evolution of bat sonar, an exquisite ultrasonic system for tracking prey through the night sky. Moths countered with ears tuned to the high frequencies of bat echolocation and with evasive action through directed turns, loops, spirals, drops, and power dives. Some bat species responded by moving the frequency and intensity of their echolocation cries away from the peak sensitivity of moth ears, and the arms race was on. Tiger moths countered by produci
