Investigation of the Correlation Between the Visually Induced Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire and the Turkish Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a phenomenon similar to motion sickness frequently observed in users of visual technologies. The Visually Induced Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (VIMSSQ), developed by Golding et al. (2006), is considered the most effective scale for assessing VIMS susceptibility levels. The main purpose of this study was to standardize the selection of participants for research conducted with virtual reality, especially motion sickness (MS) research. To achieve this, first, the Turkish version of the VIMSSQ was created to esta…

Optokinetic motion sickness: continuous head movements attenuate the visual induction of apparent self-rotation and symptoms of motion sickness.

Symptoms of motion sickness are sometimes experienced during exposure to optokinetic stimulation. Two experimetns were performed to compare the symptoms of motion sickness elicited when subjects were exposed to incremental changes in optokinetic stimulation while sitting passively and while continuously executing shoulder-to-shoulder head movements. In the first experiment, a fixed head-movement frequency (20 cpm) was used, wheras in the second the subjects varied the frequency of their head movements in order to maintain suppression of illusory self-rotation. In both experiments, subjects in …

Investigating the role of vestibular function in motion sickness and visually induced motion sickness by multiple vestibular function tests.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness (MS) and visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) are vestibular system-related conditions affecting balance. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of vestibular function and susceptibility in MS/VIMS in healthy college students and to evaluate the effectiveness of various vestibular function tests in detecting these disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five hundred young adults, grouped by motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire-short (MSSQ-S) and visually induced motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire-short (VIMSSQ-S) questionnaires, were further analyzed v…

[Effects of two comprehensive habituation training programs on alleviating motion sickness and visually induced motion sickness in college students].

Objective: To examine the effects of two complete habituation training programs onsubjective and objective indicators in college students with motion sickness (MSD) and visually induced motion sickness (VIMSD). Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted. A total of 92 college students diagnosed with MSD/VIMSD, recruited from December 2023 to June 2024, were randomized into an electric rotating chair group and an optokinetic drum rotating chair group. Both groups underwent a 28-day comprehensive habituation training program (7 days of electric/optokinetic drum rotating chair training,…

Evaluation of motion sickness susceptibility by motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis: a case-control study.

PURPOSE: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine, with unknown origin. Some studies have noted impaired postural balance in AIS, in particular, difficulty to manage situations with sensory conflict. The motion sickness susceptibility can be secondary to a sensory conflict, for example, between visual and vestibular information. Our hypothesis is: patients with AIS have difficulty in managing situations with sensory conflict and therefore have increased motion sickness susceptibility. The purpose of this study was to evaluate in AIS subjects by evalua…

Effect of temporal relationship between respiration and body motion on motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effect controlling the phase of respiration on the development of nausea provoked by periodic motion at 0.2 Hz which is maximal for provocation of motion sickness. METHODS: Subjects were exposed to 60 degrees peak-peak, pitch backwards from upright motion while viewing a video of the environment with 180 degrees phase delay. Motion duration was a maximum of 30 min and frequency was set to match individuals' spontaneous respiration. Conditions were: A, spontaneous breathing; B, inspiration cued to begin when head-down; C, inspiration cued to begin when u…

The effects of meclizine on motion sickness revisited.

AIMS: Antihistamines make up the first line of treatments against motion-sickness. Still, their efficacy and specific mechanism have come into question. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of meclizine on motion-sensitivity. METHODS: This study was carried out as a triple-blinded randomized trial involving 12 healthy subjects who were exposed to (i) vestibular (VES), (ii) visual (VIS) and (iii) visual-vestibular (VIS+VES) stimulations in the roll plane. Subjects were divided into 2 groups by stratified randomization, receiving either meclizine or a placebo. Stimulations were c

Migraine and motion sickness: what is the link?

The brainstem is a structurally complex region, containing numerous ascending and descending fibres that converge on centres that regulate b … attacks of migraine. Migraine is linked with various co-morbid conditions, the most prominent being motion sickness. Symptoms such as nausea, dizziness and headache are common to motion sickness and migraine; moreover, migraine sufferers have a heightened vulnerability to motion sickness. As both maladies involve reflexes that relay in the brainstem, symptoms may …

Chlorpheniramine and ephedrine in combination for motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Chlorpheniramine is effective against motion sickness, but produces sedation. To reduce chlorpheniramine's sedating effect and increase its effectiveness, ephedrine was combined with chlorpheniramine to prevent motion sickness. METHODS: Chlorpheniramine (C) and chlorpheniramine plus ephedrine (Chlorphedra) were studied in a randomized, double blind, crossover trial. Eighteen normal subjects were randomized to six different orderings of placebo, C (12 mg) or Chlorphedra (12 mg C + 50 mg ephedrine). They ingested the medication 3.25 hours before off vertical axis rotation in a rotat…
