Ruptured Appendiceal Mucocele Presenting as a Ventral Hernia: A Case Report of a Rare Presentation of Appendiceal Mucocele.

Mucocele of the appendix (MA) is a rare disease characterized by chronic accumulation of mucin within an appendix. Although MA can be an asymptomatic finding, some patients with MA may present with right lower quadrant (RLQ) pain, pelvic pain, or even hernias. The later presentation is usually related to rupture of the mucin-filled appendix, a condition referred to as pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). Herein, we present a case of ruptured MA presenting as an irreducible paraumbilical hernia, where the patient presented with a lump to the surgical clinic. computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen rev…

Efficacy of endoscopic sinus surgery for paranasal sinus mucocele including modified endoscopic Lothrop procedure for frontal sinus mucocele.

This study evaluated the efficacy of the modified endoscopic Lothrop procedure (MELP) for complicated frontal mucoceles and endoscopic marsupialization for other paranasal sinus mucoceles. It was a retrospective, consecutive case review of sinus mucoceles treated endoscopically by a single surgeon over a four-year period (1998-2002). There were 41 mucoceles in 28 patients, including 24 frontal, eight frontoethmoidal, three ethmoidal, five maxillary and one frontal mucocele. Twenty-one patients underwent the modified Lothrop procedure for frontal mucoceles, and seven underwent simple drainage a…

Nasal Septal Mucocele Causing Saddle Nose Deformity.

Nasal septal mucoceles are a rare occurance, and reports in the current literature are limited. We describe the case of a 73-year-old woman who developed a nasal septal mucocele several days after an episode of angioedema. The lesion was treated with 2 rounds of needle aspiration with antibiotics and the application of silastic splints. There was no recurrence after 1 month, though the patient developed a saddle nose deformity. She ultimately underwent reconstruction with a diced-cartilage dorsal augmentation graft with fibrin glue. We review the learning points of this case and summarize exis…

Diode Laser Excision of Blandin-Nuhn Mucocele.

The glands of Blandin and Nuhn are mixed mucous and serous glands that are embedded within the musculature of the anterior tongue ventrum. The differential diagnosis for lesions in that area is often challenging and includes other salivary and nonsalivary lesions. This affects decision-making, surgical management, and measures to prevent complications. Unlike conventional cold blade surgery, diode laser use may simplify such treatment.

[Pediatric acute dacryocystitis due to frontoethmoidal mucocele].

BACKGROUND: Pediatric acute dacryocystitis typically develops due to persistence of Hasner's membrane. Pediatric paranasal mucoceles are rare entities. In contrast, chronic dacryocystitis in cases of congenital dacryostenosis is one of the most frequent pediatric ophthalmologic issues. METHODS: The case report of a 10-year-old girl suffering acute dacryocystitis is presented. RESULTS: The area around the left lacrimal sac showed a painful swelling with edema and hyperemia. Systemic and local antibiotic therapy resulted in only slight improvement. Dacryoendoscopy detected acute dacryocystitis…

Facial mucocele and brain complications: diagnostic priorities.

We present the case of a male with a history of nasal polyposis underwent bilateral nasosinusal endoscopic surgery. He went to the emergency department because of having behavioral changes and left frontal headache. An emergency CT showed nasal-sinus polyposis and several nodular lesions with a characteristic "ring" enhancement and perilesional edema. These findings were compatible facial mucocele complicated with rupture of the bone wall of the left frontal sinus and frontal abscess. Urgent surgery was performed, with left frontal craniectomy and drainage of the abscesses. Mucoceles are benig…

Mucocele on Lower Lip: A Case Series.

Mucocele is a common salivary gland disorder that can appear in the lacrimal sac, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, appendix, or gall bladder. These lesions occur due to mucous accumulation resulting from the alteration of minor salivary glands. Lower lip is the most common site of occurrence of these lesions in the oral cavity and most probable cause is trauma or habit of lip biting. Diagnosis is mainly clinical due to its pathognomonic presentation. We report a case series of mucocele in children treated by conventional surgical excision of the lesion.

Giant Appendicular Mucocele Due to Mucinous Cystadenoma.

UNLABELLED: Mucocele of the appendix is a rare clinicopathological entity simulating acute appendicitis. The most common form of the mucocele is cystadenoma, which is characterized by luminal dilatation producing large amounts of mucin. We present a new case of a giant mucocele of appendix with mucinous cystadenoma. A 61-year-old female was admitted with complaints of severe lower right quadrant pain. Ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) suggested that it was a mucocele, but due to severity of pain, she underwent an emergency operation. Fortunately, without a perforation, it was a gian…

Mucocele in a spectacled owl (Pusilatrix perspicillata).

A 6-year-old breeding female spectacled owl (Pusilatrix perspicillata) was presented for a soft, fluid-filled, spherical mass under the neck … -type, cuboidal epithelial cells lying in abundant mucinous matrix. Findings were consistent with a mucocele of the esophageal mucosal gland. Excision was considered curative based on follow-up 6 months after initial presentation. To our knowledge, this is the first report of this condition in Strigiformes and indicates that mucocele should be included in …

A giant frontoethmoid mucocele with intracranial extension.

Mucoceles are mucus-containing cysts lined by epithelium. Although benign, they may show expansive growth and remain undiagnosed until symptoms due to compression of surrounding structures arise. We report a rare case of frontoethmoid mucocele with intracranial extension in an 80-year-old woman with complaints of headache, right diplopia and proptosis. A right frontoorbital craniotomy was performed, and a mucocele in the frontal sinus extending into the frontal lobe and orbit was totally removed. The patient was successfully treated without any complication. The two-year follow-up results were…

Peculiar case of mucocele of appendiceal tip.

Mucocele of Appendix is a gross or clinical descriptive term for dilatation of the appendiceal lumen by mucus. It is a rare pathology with an overall incidence of 0.2 to 0.3% of all appendectomies. Majority of these cases present with mucocele involved whole length of the appendix. On extensive literature search, exact incidence of mucocele confined only to the tip of appendix is not known, though there are very few case reports. Here we report a peculiar case of large mucocele of appendix confined only to the tip, sparing significant length of proximal appendix and causing diagnostic dilemma pr…

Appendix mucocele mimicking a complex ovarian cyst.

Appendiceal mucocele is a rare entity which is characterized by cystic dilatation due to abnormal accumulation of mucus in the lumen of the appendix. Patients are often diagnosed incidentally by abdominal screening or abdominal surgery for other causes. Pain in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen, which may present as acute or chronic appendicitis, is the most common symptom of appendix mucocele, when the patient is symptomatic. This study describes the case of a 26-year-old female for whom surgical intervention for a complex ovarian cyst was planned, but who instead underwent laparoscopic…

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma presenting as a retromolar mucocele.

A 44 year old female presented with an intraoral soft tissue swelling in the retromolar region, which was painless, mobile and fluctuant in nature. Computed tomography as well as preoperative ultrasound revealed thick walled cystic lesion. The lesion was clinically diagnosed as mucocele. Ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration was done, which revealed turbid, straw colour fluid. This cystic swelling was completely excised and histopathologically identified to be low grade Mucoepidermoid carcinoma. This unusual presentation of Mucoepidermoid carcinoma as an intraoral cyst is one of the rare an…

Concurrent occurrence of mucocele and pyogenic granuloma.

A mucocele is a common, benign lesion of the oral cavity that develops following the extravasation or retention of mucous from a major or minor salivary gland. A pyogenic granuloma (PG) is also a common, benign condition characterized by proliferating capillaries that affect the skin and mucous membranes. The concurrent occurrence of a mucocele and a PG lesion has rarely been reported in the medical literature. This case study reports such a finding in a 16-year-old patient who presented to our department.

Mucocele of the appendix. Two case reports.

UNLABELLED: This study evaluated the independent relationship between the serum uric acid-to-creatinine ratio (UA/Cr) and sarcopenia phenotypes under the latest AWGS 2025 criteria, alongside the moderating role of physical activity (PA). Data were analyzed from 3,685 participants (aged ≥ 50 years) in the 2015 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Firth's logistic regression and linear models assessed associations between UA/Cr and muscle phenotypes, while diagnostic performance was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. In the fully adjusted model,
