Imaging of mucormycosis skull base osteomyelitis.

Skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) is typically bacterial in origin and caused by Pseudomonas, although the fungus Aspergillus has also rarely been implicated. SBO generally arises from ear infections and infrequently complicates sinonasal infection. Rhinocerebral Mucor infection is characteristically an acute, fulminant, and deadly infection also affecting the orbits and deep face and is associated with intracranial complications. Bony involvement is uncommon because of the angioinvasive nature of the fungus. More recently, chronic invasive Mucor sinusitis has been described. We report the unusua

Sjogren's Syndrome Complicated by Naso-Orbito-Cerebral Mucormycosis: A Case Report.

Background: Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by exocrine gland dysfunction. Mucormycosis is a rare yet life-threatening opportunistic fungal infection caused by Mucor species, with a high mortality rate. In patients undergoing long-term immunosuppressive therapy or corticosteroid use, especially when compounded by conditions such as diabetes or hyperlipidemia, Mucor can become pathogenic. Medical Record Description: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of a patient with Sjogren's syndrome complicated by rhinocerebral mucormycosis, focu

Sensitivity of liquid-based cytology in the diagnosis of mucormycosis in COVID-19 treated patients.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is associated with a wide range of disease patterns, ranging from mild to life-threatening pneumonia. COVID-19 can be associated with a suppressed immune response and/or hyperinflammatory state due to cytokine storm. Reduced immunity, combined with steroid usage to prevent cytokine storm along with various pre-existing co morbidities can prove to be a fertile ground for various secondary bacterial and fungal infection, including mucormycosis. Diagnosis

Lower Extremity Salvage in a Diabetic Patient With Cutaneous Mucormycosis and COVID-19 After Open Patella Fracture.

Background: Cutaneous mucormycosis, while less common than sinonasal or pulmonary infections, can cause widespread tissue necrosis after seemingly innocuous encounters. The most common location of cutaneous mucormycosis is the extremities, and extensive infection has been reported after trauma or orthopedic procedures. Case Report: A 60-year-old female with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus sustained an open patella fracture after a fall. She underwent washout and internal fixation with cannulated screws and cable tension band wiring. The patient's recovery was complicated by asymptom

Mucormycotic dermatitis in captive adult Wyoming toads.

During late May 1995, 50 adult captive endangered Wyoming toads (Bufo baxteri) were brought out of hibernation. Approximately 3 to 10 days after hibernation emergence, all toads were hormonally induced to breed, and paired. Each pair was placed in their own breeding tank. Four toads developed clinical signs of disease which included lethargy and multiple (4 to 12) small (2 mm) raised hyperemic nodules with white fuzzy caps on the ventral skin. The condition progressively worsened until death occurred, within 3 to 6 days. Mycotic dermatitis caused by Mucor sp. was diagnosed in the four toads th

Mucormycosis. Adjunctive therapy with hydrogen peroxide.

Mucormycosis is a devastating fungal disease affecting mainly diabetic and immunosuppressed patients and frequently causing death. Mucor rhizopus, the opportunistic fungus, has been controlled via radical extirpation and intravenous Amphotericin B. Hyperbaric oxygen also has been used. The authors present two interesting patients: 1) A diabetic female with rhinoorbital mucormycosis post total maxillectomy with recurrent mucormycosis and 2) A diabetic female with acute myelogenous leukemia and sphenoid sinus mucormycosis post functional endoscopic sinus surgery with residual mucormycosis. Novel Pathogenic Mucorales Identified Using the Silkworm Infection Model.

Mucormycosis, a rare but highly fatal infection, is caused by fungi of the order Mucorales. Due to their ubiquitous nature, reduced susceptibility to antifungals, acid tolerance, and ability to infect immunocompromised patients through rapid dissemination, these fungi have been frequently reported to infect the COVID-19 patients. In order to develop strategies to overcome mucormycosis, it is essential to understand and identify novel Mucorales present in the environment. In this study, we report the identification of four novel pathogenic Mucorales using the silkworm (Bombyx mori) model. The s

Spectrum of zygomycete species identified in clinically significant specimens in the United States.

Several members of the order Mucorales (subphylum Mucoromycotina) are important agents of severe human infections. The identification of these fungi by using standard mycologic methods is often difficult and time consuming. Frequently, the etiological agent in clinical cases is reported either as a Mucor sp., which is not the most frequent genus of zygomycetes, or only as a member of the Mucorales. For this reason, the actual spectrum of species of zygomycetes and their incidences in the clinical setting is not well known. The goals of this study were to compare the results of the molecular id

Haematological, serum biochemical and serological features of platypuses with and without mycotic granulomatous dermatitis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there are haematological, serum biochemical and serological differences between platypuses (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) with and without granulomatous dermatitis due to Mucor amphibiorum infection. An additional objective was to establish reference haematological and serum biochemical ranges for the species in Tasmania. DESIGN: A clinicopathological and serological study. ANIMALS: A total of 37 free-living adult platypuses captured from streams and dams in Northern Tasmania were used in the clinicopathological study. Twenty-seven were clinically normal and 10 ha

Rapid screening for human-pathogenic Mucorales using rolling circle amplification.

Mucormycosis has emerged as a relatively common severe mycosis in patients with haematological and allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Source of transmission is from unidentified sources in the environment. Early diagnosis of infection and its source of contamination are paramount for rapid and appropriate therapy. In this study, rolling circle amplification (RCA) is introduced as a sensitive, specific and reproducible isothermal DNA amplification technique for rapid molecular identification of six of the most virulent species (Rhizopus microsporus, R. arrhizus var. arrhizus, R. arrhizus var

Infantile splenorenopancreatic mucormycosis complicating neuroblastoma.

Herein is described the first case of an infant with neuroblastoma who developed isolated splenorenopancreatic mucormycosis. An 18-month-old boy with neuroblastoma who was on intensive chemotherapy was admitted with febrile neutropenia. On abdominal computed tomography, multiple hypodense lesions in the spleen with invasion to the upper pole of the left kidney were demonstrated. Enlargement of splenic lesions with a complete hypoechoic pattern replacing the whole spleen, consistent with splenic abscess were observed on serial ultrasound. On splenectomy the resected spleen appeared to be severe

Evidence of immunopathological traces in mucormycosis: an autopsy case.

A 77-year-old diabetic man newly contracted pulmonary mucormycosis. A rapidly progressing clinical course including severe worsening of pneumonia and renal failure culminated in death. This patient presented with hypocomplementemia and dermal vasculitis. Autopsied organs were examined by histological technique. Lung tissues showed pulmonary artery thrombosis and extensive alveolar invasion by Mucor hyphae with depositions of immunoglobulins, mannose-binding lectin (MBL) and C1q. The right internal jugular vein was occluded by thrombi containing numerous hyphae. The glomerular change was a hall

Diagnosis of Mucormycosis Using Frozen Section, Histopathology, Culture, and Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) Techniques: A Comparative Study.

Mucormycosis usually occurs in immunocompromised patients or those with uncontrolled diabetes. Along the third wave of SARS-CoV-2, an associated angioinvasive opportunistic infection with Mucor, a life-threatening fungal infection, was rampant and emerging. With an increase in the usage of steroids in the COVID scenario, the rate of mucormycosis did take a rapid and alarming increase in King Edward Memorial Hospital, Pune, India. Any delay in the diagnosis and management of the disease was life-threatening. The most conventional methods to diagnose mucormycosis are microbiological culture and

Monotherapy or combination therapy of isavuconazole and micafungin for treating murine mucormycosis.

OBJECTIVES: Previously we demonstrated the benefit of isavuconazole in treating murine mucormycosis due to Rhizopus. We wanted to determine the efficacy of isavuconazole in treating murine mucormycosis caused by Mucor, the second most common cause of the disease. Furthermore, because we previously determined that Rhizopus possesses the target enzyme for echinocandins and micafungin has activity against murine mucormycosis, we compared the activity of combination therapy (isavuconazole + micafungin) with placebo, either drug alone or standard therapy of liposomal amphotericin B (LAmB) in treati
