Human pulmonary dirofilariasis: report of six cases.

We report six cases of pulmonary dirofilariasis diagnosed at our laboratory with clinical and pathological features. The nodules of dirofilariasis were round in three cases as previously reported, however dumbbell-shaped in two cases. The nodule did not attach to the pleura in four cases. Microscopically, the nodules were granulomas composed of central coagulation necrosis and peripheral fibrosis with round cell infiltration, histiocytes, and multinucleated giant cells. Necrotic pulmonary artery with single or multiple sections of degenerated nematode was observed in the center of the nodule.

Biology, detection, and management of incidental pulmonary nodules: the emerging role of targeted treatments. A review of the current literature and future perspectives.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, and early diagnosis and treatment are important for improving prognosis. Pulmonary nodules (PNs) are small pulmonary lesions frequently identified during clinical practice, with incidental detection increasing due to advances in imaging techniques and the expanded use of computed tomography scans for thoracic evaluation. The majority of incidental PNs (IPNs) are benign, however some represent early-stage lung cancer, therefore distinguishing benign from malignant IPNs is key to improving lung cancer outcomes. Current managemen

Pulmonary nodules and the psychological harm they can cause: A scoping review.

More than 1.6 million pulmonary nodules are diagnosed in the United States each year. Although the majority of nodules are found to be benign, nodule detection and the process of ruling out malignancy can cause patients psychological harm to varying degrees. The present study undertakes a scoping review of the literature investigating pulmonary nodule-related psychological harm as a primary or secondary outcome. Online databases were systematically searched to identify papers published through June 30, 2023, from which 19 publications were reviewed. We examined prevalence by type, measurement,

[A case of pulmonary metastases from bladder cancer, suspected of recurrent Wegener's granulomatosis].

A 26-year-old-woman was given a diagnosis of Wegener's granulomatosis and began treatment by both prednisolone and cyclophosphamide at another institution. She was then admitted to our hospital due to progressive multiple pulmonary nodules. A diagnosis of pulmonary metastases from bladder cancer was established with radiological and histological examinations obtained by transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) and transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TUR-Bt). She had already received a total dose of 120 g of cyclophosphamide, which could be related to the development of bladder cancer. On de…

The pulmonary nodule after lung transplantation. Cause and outcome.

In the immunocompromised patient, the pulmonary nodule remains a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. We studied the incidence, cause, diagnosis, and therapy of pulmonary nodules after lung transplantation (LTx). Eight out of 64 patients (12.5%) developed pulmonary nodules after a median follow-up of 5.8 months (range, 1 to 10 months). The median age was 30.5 years (range, 21 to 62 years). Solitary pulmonary nodules (n = 2) disappeared spontaneously within 3 weeks and were suspected to be of infectious origin. The cause of multiple nodules (n = 6) was posttransplant lymphoproliferative disord

Cavitary necrobiotic nodule imitating malignant lung disease in a patient without articular manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis.

Pulmonary involvement is a serious complication of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and may be seen as airway disease, rheumatoid nodules, interstitial lung disease, and pleurisy. However, cavitary rheumatoid nodules without articular manifestations are rare. We describe a male patient presenting with pleurisy and multiple rheumatoid necrobiotic nodules in the absence of arthritis or subcutaneous nodules. One of the nodules was quite large (5 x 8 cm in diameter) and cavitary, imitating bronchial carcinoma radiologically and bronchoscopically. Definite histopathologic diagnosis was obtained by open lu

Rapid Growth of Lung Nodules due to Combined Pulmonary Vasculitis, Silicoanthracosis, and Chondrocalcinosis.

Background. Silicoanthracosis is a pneumoconiosis due to occupational inhalation of silica and carbon dusts. Clinically, it can be associated with vasculitis or rheumatoid arthritis. In association with these diseases, silicoanthracosis can present within the lung with multiple pulmonary nodules which, as a differential diagnosis, can mimic metastatic disease or multiple abscesses. Case Presentation. We present the case of a 62-year old former pit worker with pulmonary nodules, chondrocalcinosis due to calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD), and a history of renal cancer. Within a short perio…

Benign metastasizing leiomyoma of the lung: A case report and literature review.

Pulmonary benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) is a rare event characterized by benign soft-tissue tumors that occur when uterine leiomyomas metastasize to the lung. The present study reports the case of a 47-year-old female patient who presented with multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules on a chest X-ray during a health checkup nine years after a hysterectomy due to uterine fibroids. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed multiple well-defined nodular shadows in the lung. One tumor of the left upper lung was resected by thoracoscopic surgery. Pathologically, the resected lesion consisted of b

One-stage resection of four genotypes of bilateral multiple primary lung adenocarcinoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of multiple primary lung cancer (MPLC) in China is 0.52%-2.45%. Most primary lung cancer cases have reported two lesions or three in rare cases. We report a rare case of bilateral simultaneous multiple primary lung adenocarcinoma of four different genotypes. CASE SUMMARY: A 58-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital on June 29, 2021, and upon physical examination, four multiple pulmonary nodules were identified in both lungs. Further computed tomography (CT) images revealed the presence of ground glass nodules, predicted to be high-risk cancer lesions by artifici…

A rheumatoid nodule in an unusual location: mediastinal lymph node.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a multisystem inflammatory disease characterised by destructive synovitis and varied extra-articular involvement. Rheumatoid lung nodules are the most common pulmonary manifestations of RA. Rheumatoid nodules in mediastinal lymph nodes are extremely uncommon. We describe a male patient with long-standing RA and subcutaneous rheumatoid nodules presenting with multiple lung nodules and mediastinal lymphadenopathies. Definite histopathology of a lymph node was consistent with necrobiotic granuloma due to RA. Clinicians should be aware of rheumatoid nodules as a potent

Presurgical computed tomography-guided localization of lung ground glass nodules: comparing hook-wire and indocyanine green.

BACKGROUND: Presurgical computed tomography (CT)-guided localization is frequently employed to reduce the thoracotomy conversion rate, while increasing the rate of successful sublobar resection of ground glass nodules (GGNs) via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). In this study, we compared the clinical efficacies of presurgical CT-guided hook-wire and indocyanine green (IG)-based localization of GGNs. METHODS: Between January 2018 and December 2021, we recruited 86 patients who underwent CT-guided hook-wire or IG-based GGN localization before VATS resection in our hospital, and comp

First-in-human use of a new robotic electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopic platform with integrated Tool-in-Lesion Tomosynthesis (TiLT) technology for peripheral pulmonary lesions: The FRONTIER study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: As the presentation of pulmonary nodules increases, the importance of a safe and accurate method of sampling peripheral pulmonary nodules is highlighted. First-generation robotic bronchoscopy has successfully assisted navigation and improved peripheral reach during bronchoscopy. Integrating tool-in-lesion tomosynthesis (TiLT) may further improve yield. METHODS: We performed a first-in-human clinical trial of a new robotic electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy system with integrated digital tomosynthesis technology (Galaxy System, Noah Medical). Patients with modera

Multiple micromeningiomas coexist with primary lung adenocarcinoma: A case report.

Cases of multiple ectopic meningiomas in the lung coexisting with pulmonary malignancies are extremely rare in the clinic. On imaging, it is difficult to distinguish multiple ectopic meningiomas from lung cancer, which puts forward higher requirements for treatment. A 65-year-old female patient was admitted to our department for multiple nodules in both lungs. The patient underwent thoracoscopic wedge resection and segmental resection. Postoperative pathological examination found lung meningioma, atypical adenomatoid hyperplasia (AAH), carcinoma in situ (AIS), invasive adenocarcinoma, and othe

Four cases of pulmonary nodular eosinophilic granulomatosis in dogs.

Four cases of pulmonary nodular eosinophilic granulomatosis are described in dogs. All dogs were presented for chronic respiratory disease. Three dogs had radiographic and pathologic evidence of heartworm disease. One dog had lesions suggestive of past heartworm disease; but adult worms were not found at necropsy. Radiographically, single or multiple pulmonary densities up to 10 cm in diameter were seen. Hemograms on 3 dogs indicated a leukocytosis, neutrophilia, and eosinophilia. A microfilaremia was not detected in any of these dogs. Transtracheal washes yielded eosinophils, neutrophils, and

Not everything is what it seems: malignant pleural mesothelioma mimicking lung cancer.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma usually arises from the pleural surface and progressively encases the lungs. Pulmonary involvement generally occurs at an advanced stage, while intraparenchymal nodules, in the absence of pleural lesions, constitute a less frequent presentation. We describe the case of a patient with multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules, mediastinal lymphadenopathies and left pleural effusion in the absence of pleural lesions, simulating advanced stage lung cancer. Thoracoscopic inspection did not detect any lesions. Pathological examination on one pulmonary nodule revealed malig
