The importance of the continuity of the muscle coat and of the presence of an intraluminal bolus for the peristaltic performance of the Rhesus monkey esophagus was studied. Transection and reanastomosis with muscle-to-muscle contact in the striated muscle part of the esophagus did not interfere with the progression of primary peristaltic contractions. However, when the transection with reanastomosis was performed in the smooth muscle part of the gullet the peristaltic progression of the deglutitive contraction waves in the segment below the transection was affected. After deviation of the swal

The cremaster muscle (CM) is a striated muscle showing some unusual features for ordinary striated muscles, in fact it receives, besides somatic innervation, a conspicuous autonomic sympathetic innervation. The autonomic neurons associated with the CM of 4 male intact pigs were typified combining the retrograde nontrans-synaptic fluorescent tracer Fast Blue (FB) and double labeling immunohistochemical methods. We collected the L4 sympathetic trunk ganglion (STG), that our preliminary studies proved to contain the highest number (575.5 ± 152.93; mean ± S.E.M., n = 4) of FB+ sympathetic neurons

The mechanisms implicated in the opening of the bladder neck during voiding are still controversial. We present a study of the reflexes of bladder, urethra and periurethral striated muscles in the cat. The study in vivo shows that a passive muscle tonus of the urethra is able to maintain the continence. During voiding, opening of the bladder outlet is done actively: contraction of the longitudinal and relaxation of the circular muscle layers of the urethra associated with detrusor contraction. There is a local reflex between the urethra, bladder and periurethral striated muscles that completes

Laminopathies are a group of rare disorders due to mutation in LMNA gene. Depending on the mutation, they may affect striated muscles, adipose tissues, nerves or are multisystemic with various accelerated ageing syndromes. Although the diverse pathomechanisms responsible for laminopathies are not fully understood, several therapeutic approaches have been evaluated in patient cells or animal models, ranging from gene therapies to cell and drug therapies. This review is focused on these therapies with a strong focus on striated muscle laminopathies and premature ageing syndromes.

An anatomical and neuropharmacological study of the urethra was performed in 19 patients after prostatetectomy to investigate the mechanism of continence. Anatomically, the urethral segment responsible for the postprostatectomy continence was located distal to the open prostatic fossa in the external sphincter which is comprised of intrinsic striated muscle and is called arbitrarily rhabdosphincter by the author. This unique striated muscle in the rhabdosphinecter appears to be primarily under the alpha-adrenergic influence in view of the change in the urethral pressure profile observed follow

A 66-year-old woman who had myasthenia gravis (MG) admitted for type II respiratory failure and right heart failure. Although she had neither ptosis, eye movement disorder, nor diplopia, she had orbital muscles weakness, reduction of gag reflex, dysarthria, dysphagia, and mild proximal muscle weakness. Blood tests showed anti-striated muscle antibodies (anti-titin antibody and anti-Kv1.4 antibody). A muscle biopsy of the left biceps showed a marked variation in fiber size, mild mononuclear cell infiltration was seen surrounding blood vessels in perimysium and nemaline bodies in some fibers. Im

Poor skeletal muscle fitness contributes to many chronic disease states, including obesity, heart failure, primary muscle disorders, and age-related sarcopenia. Receptor-interacting protein 140 (RIP140) is a striated muscle-enriched nuclear receptor coregulator known to suppress mitochondrial oxidative capacity. To investigate the role of RIP140 in skeletal muscle, striated muscle-specific RIP140-deficient (strNrip1-/-) mice were generated and characterized. strNrip1-/- mice displayed an enhanced endurance performance phenotype. RNA-sequence (RNA-seq) analysis of glycolytic fast-twitch muscle …

Rhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma (RMH), also known as congenital midline hamartoma and striated muscle hamartoma, is a rare congenital malformation presenting most commonly in midline sites of the head and neck region. Since its first description in 1986, 67 cases have been reported to date. We report a case of RMH presenting as a chin nodule in an otherwise healthy 15-year-old male. The patient presented with a dome-shaped subcutaneous lesion on his chin which had been present since birth, but had grown and was interfering with his ability to shave. He otherwise had no history of congeni

PURPOSE: To characterize and evaluate the MR imaging features of early myositis ossificans (MO) without calcification or ossification.
METHODS: The MRI manifestations of seven patients with pathologically proven early MO were retrospectively analyzed with regard to tumor location, size, margins, signal intensity, and enhancement appearance in MR images. Additionally, the surrounding soft-tissue edema and adjacent bone change were assessed.
RESULTS: All cases (n=7) had intramuscular tumor-like masses without calcifications. The lesions appeared as isointense in T1-weighted images (T1-WI) and

The detrusor muscle, bladder neck, proximal, middle and distal regions of the urethra of the female pig were studied by histochemical and immunohistochemical methods to localize catecholamine-containing, acetylcholinesterase-positive and peptide-containing nerves. The peptides examined included: vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, substance P, somatostatin, [Met]enkephalin, bombesin and gastrin. The greatest density of nerves was found in the smooth muscle of the distal urethra, followed by the bladder neck, middle urethra, and proximal urethra, with the least in the detrusor muscle. The greate

Phospholipids (PLs) are amphiphilic molecules that were essential for life to become cellular. PLs have not only a key role in compartmentation as they are the main components of membrane, but they are also involved in cell signaling, cell metabolism, and even cell pathophysiology. Considered for a long time to simply be structural elements of membranes, phospholipids are increasingly being viewed as sensors of their environment and regulators of many metabolic processes. After presenting their main characteristics, we expose the increasing methods of PL detection and identification that help

PURPOSE: In this research, the normal anatomy of urethral sphincter complex in young Chinese males has been studied.
METHODS: The sagittal, coronal, and axial T2-weighted non-fat suppressed fast spin-echo images of pelvic cavities of 86 Chinese young males were studied.
RESULT: Urethral sphincter complex is a cylindrical structure surrounding the urethra and extending vertically from bladder neck to perineal membrane. Urethral striated sphincter covers the anteriolateral urethra like a hat from bladder neck to verumontanum, while it surrounds the urethra in a ring shape from verumontanum to

We sought here to induce the excision of a large intragenic segment within the intact dystrophin gene locus, with the ultimate goal to elucidate dystrophin protein function and stability in striated muscles in vivo. To this end, we implemented an inducible-gene excision methodology using a floxed allele approach, demarcated by dystrophin exons 2-79, in complementation with a cardiac and skeletal muscle directed gene deletion system for spatial-temporal control of dystrophin gene excision in vivo. Main findings of this study include evidence of significant intact dystrophin gene excision, rangi

Carbonic anhydrase III has been localized using the avidin-biotin-glucose oxidase complex (ABC) method in the submandibular gland of the rat and hamster. This isozyme, which is predominant in skeletal muscle, was observed in intercalated duct, striated duct and excretory duct cells in the rat submandibular glands. In contrast, only some striated duct cells in hamster submandibular glands were stained.

1. Activation of beta-adrenoceptors causes relaxation of the urinary bladder and contraction of the external urethral sphincter, which consists of fast-contracting skeletal muscles. A beta2-adrenoceptor agonist, clenbuterol, recently has been developed as a therapeutic drug for the treatment of urinary incontinence, however beta2-adrenoceptor agonists have undesirable effects on cardiac and striated muscle function. 2. In this study, we compared the effects of the beta2-adrenoceptor agonist, clenbuterol and of a novel beta3-adrenoceptor agonist, GS332, on urinary bladder and external urethral

PURPOSE: The structure and function of the lower urinary tract are still a subject of controversial discussion. Experiments in various animals, including rhesus monkeys, are often performed to improve the understanding of human physiology without adequate knowledge of anatomical differences. Therefore, a detailed study of the lower urinary tract of the male rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) was performed to elucidate anatomical correspondences in rhesus monkeys and humans.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lower urinary tract anatomy and histomorphology were investigated in male rhesus monkeys on serial se

In the striated muscle of the upper esophageal sphincter, tonic maintenance of closure is probably mediated via tonic central excitation of the extrinsic motor innervation; relaxation represents central inhibition of this mechanism. The motor nerves are probably cholinergic and act through nicotinic receptors like those of somatic striated muscle. In the striated muscle of the esophageal body, swallowing-induced contraction is also probably a cholinergic and nicotinic response. In the smooth muscle of the esophageal body, the control of contractions is cholinergic and muscarinic in part, but t

Mechanical stress induced by contractions constantly threatens the integrity of muscle Z-disc, a crucial force-bearing structure in striated muscle. The PDZ-LIM proteins have been proposed to function as adaptors in transducing mechanical signals to preserve the Z-disc structure, however the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we show that LDB3, a well-characterized striated muscle PDZ-LIM protein, modulates mechanical stress signaling through interactions with the mechanosensing domain in filamin C, its chaperone HSPA8, and PKCα in the Z-disc of skeletal muscle. 1. The amount of 3-methylhistidine (3-MeH) has been measured in eighty-eight samples of tissue taken post-mortem from five adults. 2. The highest concentration (mumol/g fat-free dry weight) of 3-MeH was in skeletal muscle (3.31 +/- 0.05); intermediate values (2-3) were found in cardiac muscle and those tissues containing smooth muscle; and low values (less than 1) occurred in parenchymal tissues such as liver and kidney. 3. There was little variation between the mean 3-MeH content of striated muscles in different individuals, and no significant difference between the 3-MeH concentrations of st

Regenerative medicine based on tissue engineering and/or stem cell therapy techniques has the potential to improve irreversibly damaged tissues. Surgical injury to the lower urinary tract can occur as a result of radical prostatectomy or bladder neck surgery. Regeneration of urethral sphincters could be an effective treatment for post-surgical intrinsic sphincter deficiency (ISD)-related urinary incontinence. The replacement, enhancement, and/or recovery the urethral sphincter striated and smooth muscles could increase urethral closure pressure to help patients regain continence. Stem cells fr
