Studies were undertaken to investigate the ability of a user of the Nucleus multi-electrode cochlear implant to judge pitch in the context of musical intervals. The subject had qualified as a musical instrument tuner before he received his implant, and was able to judge the intervals between electrical sensations with neither training nor the guidance of familiar melodies. The procedures used were interval estimation, and interval production by the method of adjustment. The pitch of the electrical stimulation was controlled by varying the pulse repetition rate, the active electrode position, o…

Auditory hallucinations take various forms including the perception of tinnitus, voices, and, rarely, music. While formed hallucinations are usually ascribed to psychiatric illness, we describe a syndrome of musical hallucinations in mentally sane patients, who are hard of hearing or deaf. 26 cases from the literature are supplemented by 6 own observations, including the first description of two cases in a single family. The different modes of emergence, the spectrum of clinical features and their course are outlined. Differential diagnostic, pathogenetic and therapeutic aspects are discussed.

Musical hallucinations remain rare, are more common in women, and their onset is often related to ear pathology, particularly deafness. When brain disease is involved, pathology of the right or non-dominant hemisphere seems overrepresented. Psychosis and personality traits play a minimal role in their development. A discriminant function was constructed that correctly predicted the presence of brain disease (89%) and included the following clinical variables: being male, having acute onset musical hallucinations, and absence of deafness, psychiatric disease, and other forms of hallucination.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of cell-specific mental imagery on neutrophil and lymphocyte cell counts. Subjects (N = 30) were randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups that underwent a 6-week training program focusing on images of morphology, location, and movement of either neutrophils or lymphocytes. Music was used to enhance the imagery of the subjects. Peripheral white blood cell and differential counts were determined before and after the final 20-minute imagery session. Results indicated that neutrophils decreased significantly (p less than .04) in the…

The origin of systolic or diastolic musical murmurs was investigated by means of echo-doppler examination in 51 patients with various cardiac diseases. In all cases a typical doppler spectrum was identified, showing bi-directional clusters of frequencies which were concentric in systole and parallel in diastole. The doppler audio signal was musical. A similar echo-doppler signal was obtained by a diapason vibrating in isotonic solution. These data allowed us to identify the site of the vibrating cardiac structure causing the typical echo-doppler spectrum and characteristic audio signal.

Deliberate practice plays a central role in high-quality music learning, yet the motivational and technology-related factors associated with sustained deliberate music practice remain insufficiently understood. Drawing on social cognitive theory, achievement goal theory, and the literature on artificial intelligence (AI) literacy, this study examined the relationships among music learning self-efficacy, achievement goal orientation, AI literacy, and deliberate music practice. A total of 458 music students from a teacher-training university in Liaoning Province, China, completed measures of the…

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by motor disturbances that significantly impact balance, gait, and quality of life. Personalized Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (pRAS) is an emerging rehabilitative approach that utilizes auditory entrainment to improve step and gait control. The aim of this systematic review is to critically summarize the data from the most recent evidence concerning the use of pRAS in gait rehabilitation for patients with Parkinson's disease. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines, including records that evaluated music-base…

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of three common interventions for tinnitus patients: notched music therapy, conventional music therapy, and counseling.
STUDY DESIGN: Randomized, single-blinded, controlled, three-arm trial.
METHOD: This study was conducted from January 2018 to January 2019. Eligible subjects were randomized into three groups. The first group received notched music therapy (n = 25), the second received conventional music therapy (n = 24), and the third received counseling only (n = 26). The three groups did not differ in terms of demographic data including age, sex, tinnitu…

Music is a widely used tool for stress reduction and mood regulation, but its effectiveness may differ depending on individual characteristics and the emotion regulation strategies employed. In the present study, we investigated the association between (un)healthy music use and attachment style, a factor that shapes not only interpersonal behavior but also emotion regulation tendencies. Using a sample of 224 participants, we administered questionnaires assessing attachment styles, general emotion regulation tendencies, attitudes toward emotions, and patterns of healthy and unhealthy music use.…

BACKGROUND: Cardiac surgery causes adverse physical and psychological responses. Listening to music could modulate these responses.
OBJECTIVE: To measure physical/psychological responses pre and post 30 minutes of music (TX) compared with usual care (UC) in patients after cardiac surgery.
METHODS: In this randomized, 2-group trial the impact of listening to music was examined in a sample of adults, ages 18-89 years who had undergone cardiac surgery. Cortisol, immunoglobulin A, vital signs, pain, and anxiety data were collected pre and post study period.
RESULTS: There were 120 subjects, 61 …

This paper reviews musicology, linguistics, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience research on the importance of music in developing human speech and cognition. It cites research from several scientific fields on how the brain processes and reacts to melody, rhythm, harmony, loudness, dynamics and types of articulation and timbre. It also discusses musical concepts and prosodic features such as intonation, rhythm and stress related to linguistic terminology and summarises results of earlier research on how the two systems interact to strengthen or weaken an individual's ability to function wit…

Studies conducted in rodents indicate a crucial role of the opioid circuit in mediating objective hedonic reactions to primary rewards. However, it remains unclear whether opioid transmission is also essential to experience pleasure with more abstract rewards, such as music. We addressed this question using a double-blind within-subject pharmacological design in which opioid levels were up- and downregulated by administering an opioid agonist (oxycodone) and antagonist (naltrexone), respectively, before healthy participants (n = 21) listened to music. Participants also performed a monetary inc…

We investigated how familiarity alters music and language processing in the brain. We used fMRI to measure brain responses before and after participants were familiarized with novel music and language stimuli. To manipulate the presence of language and music in the stimuli, there were four conditions: (1) whole music (music and words together), (2) instrumental music (no words), (3) a capella music (sung words, no instruments), and (4) spoken words. To manipulate participants' familiarity with the stimuli, we used novel stimuli and a familiarization paradigm designed to mimic "natural" exposur…

BACKGROUND A musical hallucination (MH) is a type of auditory hallucination, and is defined as hearing music, sounds, or songs in the absence of external auditory stimuli. There are several case reports of conventional doses of tri- or tetracyclic antidepressants inducing MHs, but no such report for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Here we report a case of a patient with MHs induced by conventional doses of paroxetine. CASE REPORT The patient was a 22-year-old woman with panic disorder (PD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). On the 10th day of treatment with paroxetine 20 mg/d, olanz…
