Severe bronchiolitis in acute Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

We report on a 17-year-old patient with severe bronchiolitis due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. Despite an early 10-day course of clarithromycin, she developed progressive dyspnea, cough, fever, and severe obstructive ventilatory impairment. Sixteen days after onset of the disease a severe hemolytic anemia developed with only cold agglutinins positive at serologic screening. Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection and asthma in children.

A clinical association between exacerbation of asthma symptoms and Mycoplasma pneumoniae ( M. pneumoniae) infection has long been suspected. We studied 80 children aged 5-15 years; 50 with asthma (Group 1) and 30 without an acute exacerbation of asthma (Group 2) for detection of M. pneumoniae by serology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on nasopharyngeal aspirates. Our study confirms that lower respiratory tract infections with M. pneumoniae are frequently associated with exacerbations of asthma in children.

No evidence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in acute myringitis.

Our aim was to discover Mycoplasma pneumoniae in bullous and hemorrhagic myringitis in children <2 years of age. Middle ear fluid samples (n = 37) and samples taken from the blisters of the tympanic membranes (n = 12) studied by polymerase chain reaction for M. pneumoniae were negative. This study does not support an important role for M. pneumoniae as an etiologic agent in acute myringitis.
