Recurrent idiopathic transverse myelitis occur in multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO). In NMO, acute optic neuritis and myelitis occur, either monophasic or relapsing, without clinical manifestations of involvement of other parts of the central nervous system (CNS). Recent evidence suggests that NMO is different from multiple sclerosis. The authors reported two patients having severe recurrent transverse myelitis sparing the optic nerves and cerebral hemispheres. Both patients had longitudinally extensive myelitis in some attacks with poor neurological outcome despite aggres

Although the association between transverse myelitis (TM) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been reported previously, it remains a rare clinical condition. Our experience treating three women with lupus TM within a few months is presented. In each patient, spinal cord dysfunction was accompanied by laboratory or clinical evidence of SLE. Further neurologic manifestations, such as optic neuritis, developed in all patients, suggesting other diagnoses, including multiple sclerosis (MS), Devic's syndrome, and lupoid sclerosis. The outcomes for these three women were severe disability, dea

A 46-year-old man who was an extremely high titer hepatitis B surface (HBs)-antigen carrier had three attacks of acute demyelinating transverse myelitis associated with signs of meningeal irritation. Each episode showed good response to corticosteroid therapy. The cerebrospinal fluid was characterized by elevated levels of myelin basic protein (MBP) and predominating CD4+CD29+ helper-inducer T cells during the acute stages, and also by persistently positive HBs antigen. There were neither autoantibodies nor evidence of vasculitis. However, circulating immune complexes composed of HBs antigen d

The Zika virus (ZIKV) has been associated with several complications, including acute transverse myelitis (ATM), an acute inflammation of the spinal cord, with rapid development of motor, sensory and dysautonomic symptoms. It is a rare disease, and its clinical features, as well as differences in relation to idiopathic ATMs, are still not completely known. The objective of this paper is to review the literature in search of clinical features and complementary exams of ATM post-ZIKV infection, alone or in association with other neurological conditions (mixed diseases), as well as its treatments

BACKGROUND: We recently described magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of children with transverse myelitis (TM) at first event with important and unique differences depending on the underlying disease entity.
OBJECTIVE: To study the resolution of lesions over time in children with TM due to MOG-antibody associated disorders (MOGAD), multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) or double seronegative TM.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, 78 children from 29 different medical centres with TM as part of MOGAD (n = 34), MS (n = 20), NMOSD (n = 5)

As of January 2022, there have been over 350 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the world. The most common symptoms in those infected are fever, cough, malaise, and myalgia, however pulmonary, hematologic, gastrointestinal, renal, and neurologic complications have also been reported. Acute transverse myelitis (ATM) is an uncommon neurological syndrome characterized by acute or subacute spinal cord dysfunction that can lead to paresthesias, sensory and autonomic impairment, and even paralysis. Etiologies are often unclear; however, potential causes include infection, neoplastic, drug or tox

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary parasitic infection is extremely uncommon, and clinical presentation of Brown-Sequard syndrome is even rarer.
CASE PRESENTATION: The authors report a case involving a 57-year-old woman with Brown-Sequard syndrome, in whom magnetic resonance imaging and clinical and epidemiological features were similar to those of acute transverse myelitis. Myelotomy suggested inflammation caused by latent parasite eggs in the spinal cord. Antiparasitic and steroid therapies were administered postoperatively. To the author's knowledge, this is the first report to describe a surgical

Transverse myelitis in multiple sclerosis is typically a short cord lesion with patchy distribution. Rarely, longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis can be seen in those with highly active disease or frequent relapses. The recognition of this uncommon phenotype in multiple sclerosis is important as the treatment is largely different from other demyelinating diseases. We describe a patient with highly active relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis on interferon beta-1a who developed LETM after multiple relapses.

INTRODUCTION: West Nile Virus varies in presentation from asymptomatic to a febrile illness often associated with malaise, weakness and maculopapular rash. West Nile neuro-invasive disease often manifests as meningitis, encephalitis, and less commonly acute flaccid paralysis in a "polio-like" presentation. Acute transverse myelitis (ATM) is a rare manifestation. We present a case of neuro-invasive West Nile Virus infection with radiographic evidence of longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM), a subset of ATM.
CASE NARRATION: A 42-year-old male from Massachusetts presented with pro

INTRODUCTION: There are rare reports of the occurrence of acute transverse myelitis and Guillain-Barré syndrome after various surgical procedures and general/epidural anaesthesia. The concomitant occurrence of these pathologies is very rare and is called Guillain-Barré and acute transverse myelitis overlap syndrome. In this article, we present the case of a second trimester pregnant patient who developed Guillain-Barré and acute transverse myelitis overlap syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 16-year-old female patient who underwent a therapeutic termination of pregnancy two w

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS). A typical finding on spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of NMOSD is longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM). However, patients with NMOSD presenting with short-segment transverse myelitis (STM) during myelitis attacks associated with breast cancer are uncommon. We report a case of a 35-year-old woman with STM and left eye optic neuritis. The patient was positive for serum aquaporin-4 antibodies (AQP4-IgG), and a biopsy of the left breast showed invasive

Opso-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) is a very rare and severe condition. Ataxia, opsoclonus, myoclonus and/or behavioral and sleeping disturbances define that autoimmune disorder syndrome which is paraneoplastic or triggered by an infection. Here, we report a 3 year-old immunocompetent boy who developed an atypical OMS which was later complicated by an acute transverse myelitis. Screening for neuroblastoma was negative and extensive infectious screening revealed an active HHV-6 infection confirmed by blood and cerebrospinal fluid PCR. A parainfectious disease was suggested and immunosuppressive trea

Association of dengue fever with longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis in pediatric age group is a rare entity. We describe a case of 15 year old adolescent male who presented with dengue fever and in whom symptoms of transverse myelitis developed 4 weeks after fever (post-infectious stage). Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the diagnosis of longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis involving dorso-lumbar cord. Patient recovered almost completely with minimal residual neurological deficit after a six weeks course of corticosteroids and supportive management including physiotherapy

STUDY DESIGN: A case report of staphylococcal transverse myelitis.
OBJECTIVES: To illustrate the clinical presentation of acute transverse myelitis due to Staphylococcus aureus, without a contiguous source of infection.
SETTING: National Neuroscience Institute.
CASE REPORT: A 79-year-old female was diagnosed with acute transverse myelitis. Clues to an infectious etiology included fever, raised inflammatory markers and cerebrospinal fluid neutrophilic pleocytosis. Staphylococcal etiology was established based on cerebrospinal fluid and blood cultures. Despite extensive investigations, no con
