AIM: Statins decrease cardiovascular complications, but can induce myopathy. Here, we explored the implication of PGC-1α in statin-associated myotoxicity.
METHODS: We treated PGC-1α knockout (KO), PGC-1α overexpression (OE) and wild-type (WT) mice orally with 5 mg simvastatin kg-1 day-1 for 3 weeks and assessed muscle function and metabolism.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the early use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of diplopia following cataract surgery under peribulbar anaesthesia.
STUDY DESIGN: Single centre prospective study.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: From January 2003 to January 2005 every patient undergoing cataract surgery under peribulbar anaesthesia was included. Any patient spontaneously complaining of double vision on day 1 received a full ophthalmologic examination. The liquid secretion contained only 15% protein and had relatively low proteolytic activity. The reconstituted crude secretion had a murine i.p. LD50 of 10.33 mg/kg and was not hemorrhagic in doses up to 200 micrograms. Psychiatrists in practice encounter patients abusing alcohol and street drugs such as cocaine that can lead to toxic myopathies or neuropathies. Psychiatrists also encounter patients with neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus who are treated with myotoxic medications (e.g., Hydroxychloroquine). Thus a well-rounded knowledge of toxic myopathies and neuropathies is extremely useful. The differential diagnosis of toxic myopathies and neuropathies is expanding rapidly and practical knowledge of these entities is becoming important.

Secondary structure predictions on nine snake venom phospholipases A2 by the Chou and Fasman and Cid et al. prediction methods, have led to the location of two possible "toxic sites", responsible for the neurotoxic and myotoxic action of the basic snake venom PLA2, respectively. The accessibility to the neurotoxic site is blocked by the presence of a small helical structure (helix D in the bovine PLA2). The role of lysine residues is found to be decisive in the venom's toxicity.
