BACKGROUND: Hindfoot nails are being increasingly used, however significant complications can occur. The purpose of this study was to assess the complications following the use of hindfoot nails at our institution.
METHODS: We identified patients from a retrospective database. All underwent hindfoot nailing under the care of the senior author. Details of complications were recorded.

A simple new method for the treatment of ingrown toe-nails was devised and applied to 33 toe-nails in 22 patients. The entire nail surface, except for the margin, was abraded until the nail became flexible with a Schreu's skin grinder equipped with a steel bar. When there was infection or granulation of the nail wall, the imbedded nail corner was trimmed before abrasion. Between June 1981 and August 1983, six patients were treated with flexible intramedullary nails for both femoral and tibial fractures in six floating knees. All six patients were males averaging 26 years of age and all six were involved in motor vehicle accidents. Concomitant associated injuries were common. The results of 31 fractures of the tibial shaft treated with closed Ender nailing and early weight-bearing are reported. Twenty-five of these fractures were closed and six open. All fractures united between 6 and 16 weeks after operation. No case of deep wound infection was encountered. Comminuted fractures of the proximal and distal third were prone to angular deformities and needed cast protection post-operatively. Nail reinsertion became necessary in two patients.
