'Half a man? Still a human': Photo-stories to dismantle unsettling representations and re-define the self-identities of men living with paraplagia.

ABSTRACTDisability in anglophone media, film and culture is often depicted in ways that rarely recognise people with disabilities as whole human beings. This creates deficit perceptions on what it means to live with a disability. Through the use of photo-voice, fifteen working-class coloured men living with paraplegia in the townships of Cape Town - South Africa, created photo-stories depicting the ways in which they think main-stream society sees them and the ways in which they see themselves. The analysis of their photo-stories was used to contribute to a discourse on photo-voice as activism

Conceptualizing Consent: Cross-national and Temporal Representations of Sexual Consent in Young Africans' Creative Narratives on HIV.

Sexual violence, comprising all non-consensual sexual acts, is an important driver of HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa. Definitions of sexual violence rely on understandings of sexual consent, understood as a feeling of willingness that is communicated via shared indicators of consent. In this paper, through analysis of young authors' narrative-based social representations, we sought to provide insight into young Africans' sense-making around sexual consent in order to develop a conceptual framework that can guide future methodological and conceptual work. We analyzed representations of sex

Health and Well-Being Consequences for Gender Violence Survivors from Isolating Gender Violence.

Recent scientific literature has published about the Isolating Gender Violence (IGV), the violence exerted by harassers against those who support their victims. IGV provokes suffering to advocates with health and well-being consequences that have been analyzed by more recent research; but IGV provokes also suffering on the victims of gender violence when they see the suffering of those who have supported them and also for their isolation. Thus, the aim of the present study is to explore the health and well-being consequences of IGV on gender violence survivors. The methodology includes three n

Reading, Trauma and Literary Caregiving 1914-1918: Helen Mary Gaskell and the War Library.

This article is about the relationship between reading, trauma and responsive literary caregiving in Britain during the First World War. Its analysis of two little-known documents describing the history of the War Library, begun by Helen Mary Gaskell in 1914, exposes a gap in the scholarship of war-time reading; generates a new narrative of "how," "when," and "why" books went to war; and foregrounds gender in its analysis of the historiography. The Library of Congress's T. W. Koch discovered Gaskell's ground-breaking work in 1917 and reported its successes to the American Library Association.

The big picture: storytelling ability in adults with autism spectrum conditions.

Previous work on story-telling ability in autism spectrum conditions (ASC) has found a pattern of relatively intact use of story grammar in ASC narratives; however, prior analysis has concentrated primarily on whether specific story components are included, rather than how they are included. The present study analyzes an existing narrative dataset, concentrating on the kind of information that individuals with and without high functioning autism or Asperger syndrome include about story elements such as setting, character, conflict, and resolution. This analysis showed that individuals with ASC

Rhinoplasty for Hypertrophied Transverse Nasalis Muscle: A Case Report.

Negatively impacting the aesthetics of the face, nasal deformities can be attributed to many congenital or acquired causes, of which muscular hypertrophy is uncustomary. In this article, we narrate a case of a 26-year-old woman with a prominently wide mid-vault, in addition to other abnormalities of the nose. It was thought to originate from soft tissue because it was thick and firm to palpation. Open rhinoplasty was done where hypertrophy of the paired transverse nasalis muscle was observed and resected. The patient enjoyed a safe postoperative period with excellent cosmetic results and minim

Imaging for Adenomyosis: Making the Diagnosis by Sonography.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate a systematic approach for ultrasound diagnosis of adenomyosis. DESIGN: Stepwise demonstration of the ultrasound features of adenomyosis with narrated video footage. SETTING: In 2015, the International Morphological Uterus Sonographic Assessment group published a consensus on which terminology to use when describing myometrial lesions seen on ultrasonography [12]. However, 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) ultrasound features of adenomyosis are demonstrated most optimally using video clips. INTERVENTIONS: A systematic description, including pictograms of ind

Missed diaphragmatic injury after blunt trauma presenting with colonic strangulation: a rare scenario.

Diaphragmatic rupture occurs in 4%-5% cases of thoracoabdominal injuries. It may present acutely, in a delayed fashion or as a complicated hernia. We are describing the case of a young male presenting in respiratory distress with history of chest trauma 1.5 years back. On investigation, he was found to have left side diaphragmatic hernia containing gangrenous colon with lung collapse. The patient underwent successful operative intervention and discharged after 25 days of hospital stay. Record review suggested that the above mentioned diaphragm injury was missed in his evaluation 1.5 years back

Discursive visibility of physical activity in school time reform: an analysis of district education bureaus' official media narratives.

INTRODUCTION: The organization of school time has been a focus of recent education reform, yet which school time reform practices appear in the official social media narratives of district education bureaus remains insufficiently understood. METHODS: Taking Qingdao, China, as a case study, this study employed directed content analysis. A deductive coding framework of 3 first-level and 9 second-level nodes was first constructed from the literature and policy documents. This framework guided the retrieval of 376 articles from the official WeChat accounts of all 10 district education bureaus. In

Exploring the use of narrative-based approaches in individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: A narrative review.

OBJECTIVES: Narrative-based approaches have been utilized in medicine to better understand the illness experiences of individuals living with chronic conditions. In particular, people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (pALS) may benefit from use of narrative-based approaches, given the potential impact of progressive decline on identity of self. This review explores the use of narrative-based approaches in studies involving pALS to provide further insight to the experiences and psychosocial needs of this population. METHODS: A search was conducted utilizing EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and Goog

Testing the persuasiveness of conspiracy theories: a comparison of narrative and argumentative strategies.

The present study examined the persuasive impact of conspiracy theories (CTs) in relation to two distinct communicative strategies: argumentation and narrative. The final sample consisted of 160 participants, randomly assigned to three groups: a first group (N = 56) watched a video in which a conspiracy theory related to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion was presented in a predominantly argumentative form (mostly argumentative group: MAG); a second group (N = 53) who watched a video in which the same conspiracy theory was presented in a predominantly narrative form (mostly narrative

Personal Identity and Narrativity in Borderline Personality Disorder: A Phenomenological Reconfiguration.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex condition marked by heterogeneity. People with BPD have a profusion of symptoms spread across various levels of lived experience, such as identity, affectivity, and interpersonal relationships. Researchers and clinicians have often resorted to the structuring concept of Self to organize the fragmentation of their experience at the identity level. Notably, using the concept of the narrative self, Fuchs proposed to interpret BPD as a fragmentation of narrative identity. This interpretation of BPD, widely shared, has been challenged by Gold and K

'I felt forced to find an alternative': a qualitative analysis of women medical educators' narratives of career transitions.

OBJECTIVES: While institutional and systemic attempts to increase women's participation in medical education have enabled increasing numbers to enter the field and achieve more senior positions, little is known about lived experiences of female clinical educators. Women clinicians are more likely to change careers and work less than full time. This study focuses on women medical educators' narratives of career change, with the aim of exploring the interplay between factors affecting career decision-making, career trajectory and professional development.  METHODS: We employed narrative enquiry
