The role of hydration in the maintenance of health is increasingly recognized. Hydration requirements vary for each person, depending on physical activity, environmental conditions, dietary patterns, alcohol intake, health problems, and age. Elderly individuals have higher risk of developing dehydration than adults. Diminution of liquid intake and increase in liquid losses are both involved in causing dehydration in the elderly. The water used for drinking is provided through regular public water supply and the official sanitary controls ensure their quality and hygiene, granting a range of va

This study investigated the ability of natural river biofilms from different seasons to degrade the carbamate pesticides methomyl, carbaryl and carbofuran in single and multiple pesticide systems, and the effects of these pesticides on algal and bacterial communities within biofilms. Spring biofilms had the lowest biomass of algae and bacteria but showed the highest methomyl degradation (>99%) and dissipation rates, suggesting that they might contain microorganisms with high methomyl degradation abilities. Degradation of carbofuran (54.1-59.5%) by biofilms in four seasons was similar, but low

Based on the excellent band narrowing and background suppressing features of second-derivative constant-energy synchronous spectrofluorimetry with a Δ⁻υ value of 1400 cm(-1) , the strong fluorescence intensity for benzo[α]pyrene (BaP) obtained in dichloromethane and the use of standard addition method, a highly sensitive and selective approach for the quantitative determination of trace amount of BaP in drinking water has been established in this study. The detection and quantification limits were 0.11 and 0.37 ng L(-1) , respectively, and the recoveries obtained from spiked Milli-Q water, bot

The effect of technogenic pressure on the weight indices of major endocrine glands responsible for adaptation to adverse environmental conditions was studied in murine rodents. The data obtained in technogenic and natural ecosystems were compared. Using the method of morphophysiological indicators, it was shown that exposure to heavy pollution (emissions from lead and zinc smelters) caused a significant increase in the adrenal index of non-reproductive animals (0.45-0.56 mg/g, compared to 0.15-0.33 mg/g in the norm); conversely, the liver index decreased to 0.39-0.49 mg/g (below the lower limi

Comparative investigations were made with two groups of cows (a control) and an experimental one) aiming to establish the effect of prolonged day length during the autumn-winter and the early spring periods on the physiological state of the cows, the yield of milk and fertilization during the lactation period. Results obtained indicate that supplementary illumination with visible rays at a rate of 5 w/m2 from the floor and a 16 h day length including the natural day period, enhances the content of Ca, inorganic P and vitamin D and A of the blood serum, stabilizes at a constant level the quanti

Photoperiod is a stable seasonal signal. Although photoperiodic flowering is well understood in short-day (SD) and long-day (LD) annual plants, the regulatory mechanisms in perennials remain elusive. In a perennial woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca), flowering is induced in SDs in autumn and plants flower following spring, while in plants with mutated FvTERMINAL FLOWER1 (FvTFL1), LDs induce flowering. We investigated photoperiodic flowering of F. vesca through phenotypic and molecular characterization of transgenic lines and their crosses. We studied natural variation in flowering time and g

A mathematical model of enzootic Lyme-disease transmission in a natural focus is presented. This model is based on the life history of the vector tick Ixodes scapularis Say and the primary reservoir host Peromyscus leucopus. Using this model, the threshold condition for the disease to be able to invade a nonenzootic region is determined as a function of the various possible transmission chains operating throughout the year. These expressions show that the transmission chain in which ticks acquire the disease from mice in the fall and transmit it back to mice as nymphs in the spring is the most

In this study, we assessed the effect of a 5-yr maintenance program with ranitidine on the natural history of duodenal ulcer disease both during treatment and after drug withdrawal. Two groups of patients with duodenal ulcer were studied. In group A patients (n = 40), ranitidine (150 mg/day) was given continuously for 5 yr; group B patients (n = 40), received seasonal, 8-wk prophylactic treatment with ranitidine (300 mg/day), in spring and fall. Routine endoscopy was performed every year and whenever ulcer symptoms recurred. After the 5-yr study, the drug was discontinued in both groups, and p

Limited research has been conducted to date on how disaster colonialism shapes, maintains, or destroys social organisations and relationships within indigenous societies. This study was conducted within the Hot Spring Tribal Community (HSTC) of the Rukai people, one of 16 indigenous groups in Taiwan, in the aftermath of Typhoon Morakot in 2009. Based on ethnographic research, the study reveals that the HSTC had endured more than a century of colonialism, resulting in an 'unnatural' disaster long before the storm struck the island. The impact of colonial forces intensified through a variety of

At temperate latitudes, the annual cycle of day length synchronizes circannual rhythms, and, in mammals, this is mediated via nocturnal production of the pineal hormone melatonin, proportional to the length of the night. Here, we studied circannual synchronization in an arctic species, the reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus), which ceases to produce a rhythmic melatonin signal when it is exposed to extended periods of continuous midwinter darkness and continuous midsummer light. Using food intake, antler growth and moult as endpoints, we demonstrate that when animals living at 70°N are trans

We presented the data on the abundance of immature instars of the taiga tick Ixodes persulcatus Schuize on the common shrews Sorex araneus L. in natural foci of tick-borne encephalitis in the south of Western Siberia. Basing on the results of virological and serological studies we demonstrated a low effectiveness of this host species as a donor of disease agent strains, which are predominant in the territory under study, for ticks feeding on shrews. The analysis of samples taken from the young shrews in winter and spring using reverse RNA transcription with polymerase chain reaction and ELISA

Families with young school-age children experienced unique challenges during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. This longitudinal, mixed-methods study explored links between parent-child conversations early in the COVID-19 pandemic and children's later social-emotional adjustment and conceptualizations of the pandemic. In a socioeconomically diverse (36% low-income) sample of 183 families, parents (94% women, 6% men) reported on the content of their conversations about the COVID-19 pandemic in Spring 2020 with their young school-age children (81% White, 8% Hispanic/Latine, 2% Asian/Pac

The thermal ecology of ectotherm animals has gained considerable attention in the face of human-induced climate change. Particularly in aquatic species, the experimental assessment of critical thermal limits (CTmin and CTmax) may help to predict possible effects of global warming on habitat suitability and ultimately species survival. Here we present data on the thermal limits of two endemic and endangered extremophile fish species, inhabiting a geothermally heated and sulfur-rich spring system in southern Mexico: The sulfur molly (Poecilia sulphuraria) and the widemouth gambusia (Gambusia eur

After decades of high deer populations, North American forests have lost much of their previous biodiversity. Any landscape-level recovery requires substantial reductions in deer herds, but modern societies and wildlife management agencies appear unable to devise appropriate solutions to this chronic ecological and human health crisis. We evaluated the effectiveness of fertility control and hunting in reducing deer impacts at Cornell University. We estimated spring deer populations and planted Quercus rubra seedlings to assess deer browse pressure, rodent attack, and other factors compromising

UNLABELLED: We investigated the prevalence of Mycobacterium marinum lymphadenitis and describe 4 children with the disease. The database of the microbiology laboratory of a tertiary pediatric medical center was searched for all cases of nontuberculous mycobacterial lymphadenitis from 1996 to 2016. M. marinum lymphadenitis was defined as isolation of the pathogen from a lymph node or from a skin lesion with an enlarged regional lymph node. M. marinum was isolated from lymph nodes in 2 of 167 patients with nontuberculous mycobacterial lymphadenitis and from skin lesions in 2 children with skin l

Irrigation for intensive sugar cultivation started in the early 1980s at Richard Toll, some 100 km from the mouth of the Senegal River. Infections with Schistosoma mansoni were first seen in late 1988. This study records quantitative snail surveys for over 3 years from 1992 at sites representing different habitats in and around the irrigation scheme. Populations of both Biomphalaria pfeifferi (the intermediate host of S. mansoni) and Bulinus spp. (mainly B. truncatus, the local host of S. boris) peaked in late 'spring' or early 'summer', depending on the habitat, and then remained low until th

Arctic communities, ecosystems, and infrastructure are increasingly coming under scrutiny due to ongoing attempts at decolonization and reconciliation with Indigenous groups and the potential for geopolitical conflict in the region. There is also increased attention to the region from various industries because of its economic potential, especially as climate change allows for increased access for development. This increase in attention has highlighted the lack of understanding about drinking water sources and infrastructure in the Arctic. In this study we conducted extensive water quality mon

Although Asklepios (Asclepius), the god of medicine, was the main and most famous healing deity of Classical Antiquity, other gods and goddesses also had healing aspects and abilities - especially Eileithyia, the goddess of childbirth and labour pains and the protector of pregnant and birthing women and newborns. Unlike the main ancient deities (including Asklepios/Asclepius), the cult of Eileithyia was practiced in smaller districts, centred around an altar with a statue (sometimes the statue was placed in a small temple) and sometimes located outside the main part of city-states or directly

The polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content of phytoplankton determines the nutritional quality of aquatic basal food resources and influences food-web energy transfer. Field studies suggest that phytoplankton PUFA content is associated with taxonomic characteristics, with nutrient enrichment promoting cyanobacteria dominance to reduce phytoplankton PUFA content. Nevertheless, laboratory evidence indicates that nutrient enrichment can also alter the fatty acid composition of single algae species. The role of intraspecific physiological alterations has long been overlooked. To partition the r
