BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health, including neighborhood context, may be a key driver of severe maternal morbidity and its related racial and ethnic inequities; however, investigations remain limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the associations between neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics and severe maternal morbidity, as well as whether the associations between neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics and severe maternal morbidity were modified by race and ethnicity.
STUDY DESIGN: This study leveraged a California statewide data resource on all hospital births a

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated whether neighborhood characteristics correlated with early neurodevelopment and whether these characteristics confounded the previously reported association between exposure to chlorpyrifos (an organophosphate insecticide) and neurodevelopment.
METHODS: We obtained prenatal addresses, chlorpyrifos exposure data, and 36-month Psychomotor Development Index (PDI) and Mental Development Index (MDI) scores for a birth cohort in New York City (born 1998-2002). We used data from the 2000 US Census to estimate measures of physical infrastructure, socioeconomic status, crowdin…

Neighborhood social determinants of health have been shown to influence cardiovascular risk and the development of cardiovascular disease, but few studies have been done about early-life exposure as well as the combined effect of multiple neighborhood social determinants of health measures. Each 1-standard-deviation increase in the neighborhood social determinants of health index is associated with increased risk of coronary artery calcification at the year 7, year 15, and year 20 visits (Odds Ratios range from 1.15 to 1.17). The area under the Receiver Operating Characteristics curve ranges b

OBJECTIVE: Older adults who live alone are more likely to report feelings of depression than those who live with a spouse or other family members. This study examines the effects of residential status and perceived neighborhood characteristics on depression in middle-aged and older adults.
METHODS: This study is based on a probability sample of 1049 adults aged 55-98 years (M = 69 years) residing in Allegheny County, Pittsburgh, PA, USA in 2014. Thirty percent of participants reported living alone. We tested a multivariate model using living alone (vs. living with a family member or others) a…

The current study examined the impact of exposure to violence and neighborhood disadvantage on criminal recidivism among Black (n = 69) and White (n = 53) female juvenile offenders. Participants were girls between the ages of 13 and 19 (M = 16.8; SD = 1.2) who were sentenced to secure custody. Using a multi-method research design, the study assessed neighborhood disadvantage through census level data, exposure to violence through self-report, and criminal recidivism through official records. Results indicated that Black girls were significantly more likely than White girls to live in disadvant

Loneliness is increasingly recognized as a critical public health concern, yet evidence on the associations between long-term residential conditions and loneliness trajectories remains limited, particularly in developing countries. Using nationally representative longitudinal data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), this study identified loneliness trajectories among middle-aged and older adults and examined the associations between housing and neighborhood characteristics and trajectory membership. Growth mixture modeling (GMM) was applied to identify latent traj…

Cities are certainly a key factor in the location of gambling facilities. This paper aims to map the location of gambling outlets in urban areas and to examine potential links between neighborhoods socioeconomic and demographic characteristics and gambling supply, taking into account spatial dependencies of neighboring areas. This correlation is of interest because neighborhood characteristics may attract sellers, and because the presence of gambling sellers may cause changes in neighborhood demographics. Using detailed official data from the city of Madrid for the year 2017, three spatial eco…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Housing insecurity is an established social determinant of health, with older adults being disproportionately vulnerable. Despite growing research attention, no studies have reviewed the measurement tools existing specifically for this population. This systematic review synthesizes quantitative measures of housing insecurity used among older adults, examines their dimensional structures, and evaluates their psychometric properties.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across 5 electronic databases with no d

This article presents a practice-based case study illustrating how the action areas and strategies outlined in the Ottawa Charter can be put into practice and reduces neighbourhood-level health inequalities. The Priority Neighbourhood Development (PND) programme in Worcestershire focused on small, high-need geographical areas identified through analyses of emergency hospital admissions and socio-economic data. Work in the socio-economically deprived Westlands housing area is described in detail. Community development workers mapped local assets and deficits, enabling residents to challenge sti

Extreme weather events such as hurricanes and floods cause increasing damage to communities, leading to substantial economic losses and displacement of populations1-6. Previous research suggests that there are disparities in the resilience capacity of neighbourhoods, predicting a recovery mechanism of either segmented withdrawal or reinforcement across different neighbourhood groups7-12. Assessing these hypotheses and investigating if-and to what extent-neighbourhood built environments recover at scale has been difficult because previous measures have relied on aggregated survey data1,7,9-14.

Living in a disadvantaged neighborhood is associated with poor health outcomes. Blood or Marrow Transplant (BMT) survivors remain at risk of chronic health conditions requiring anticipatory management. We hypothesized that among BMT survivors, neighborhood disadvantage was associated with poor self-reported routine health care utilization and health. We leveraged data from BMTSS - a retrospective cohort study examining long-term outcomes among individuals surviving ≥2 y following BMT at three institutions between 1974 and 2014. Participants in this analysis completed the BMTSS survey (sociodem

IMPORTANCE: Differences in neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics are important considerations in understanding differences in risk vs resilience in mental health. Neighborhood disadvantage is associated with alterations in the function and structure of threat neurocircuitry.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations of neighborhood disadvantage with white and gray matter and neural reactivity to positive and negative stimuli in the context of trauma exposure.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cross-sectional study, survivors of trauma who completed sociodemographic and posttraumat

Prior research has documented a link between perceived neighborhood safety and functional limitations including incident mobility limitation, yet no research has explored the association between perceived neighborhood safety and recovery from functional limitations. This study investigates whether perceived neighborhood safety independently predicts recovery. Using longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) (1996-2008), discrete-time event history models with multiple competing events were estimated using multinomial logistic regression. Robust standard errors were used to ad

In this study, we examined the influence of word-level phonological and lexical characteristics on early phoneme awareness. Typically developing children, ages 61 to 78 months, completed a phoneme-based, odd-one-out task that included consonant-vowel-consonant word sets (e.g., "chair-chain-ship") that varied orthogonally by a phonological characteristic, sound contrast similarity (similar vs. dissimilar), and a lexical characteristic, neighborhood density (dense vs. sparse). In a subsample of the participants-those with the highest vocabularies-results were in line with a predicted interactive

Released prisoners diagnosed with psychotic disorders have elevated rates of violent reoffending risk and their exposure to adverse neighborhood environments may contribute to this risk. We identified all released sentenced prisoners in Sweden between 2003 and 2013 (n = 47226) and followed them up for a median period of 4.4 years. We identified prisoners who had ever been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder (n = 3782) or prescribed antipsychotics (n = 7366). We examined 3 neighborhood characteristics: income, proportion of welfare recipients, and crime rate. By fitting generalized mixed-effect…

BACKGROUND: We examined whether higher access to parks and greenspace is independently associated with an increase in physical activity and lower rates of obesity when neighbourhood walkability is accounted for and whether neighbourhood walkability and park access have synergistic effects on these outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from the Canadian Community Health Survey between 2007 and 2014 for adults aged 20 to 74 in Ontario, Canada. Neighbourhood-level park access exposures included size of parks and number of parks within 800 m of residential areas, and neigh

Maintaining meaningful access to the surrounding community is increasingly recognised as a key component of well-being, quality of life, independence, identity, and social citizenship for people living with dementia. Institutions often act as gatekeepers, mediating residents' access to the surrounding neighbourhood. Yet little empirical evidence exists on how residential care facilities act as institutional mediators of of residents' access to the neighbourhood beyond the institution's premises. This cross-sectional study draws on survey data from 423 directors of Portuguese care homes to exam

BACKGROUND: Research on home-based eldercare has increasingly moved beyond physical safety and accessibility to consider psychological wellbeing and everyday activity. However, older adults are still often treated as a homogeneous group. Less is known about how different psychological profiles are associated with residential preferences, activity patterns, and perceived environmental support among early-stage aging adults.
METHODS: This study focused on early-stage older adults and applied a human-environment systems framework to examine the relationships among psychological characteristics,

BACKGROUND: Multi-level factors, including demographic and neighborhood social conditions, related to disparities in oral cavity cancer (OCC) are not fully understood. We examined the association between these factors and survival outcomes among patients diagnosed with OCC.
METHODS: We identified 14,416 patients diagnosed with OCC from 1995 to 2020 using population-based data from the Texas Cancer Registry. Neighborhood-level social vulnerability was measured using the 2010 US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Neighborhood Social Vulnerability Index (CDC-SVI). We examined race and
