Fulminant acute Budd-Chiari syndrome stemming from an adrenal tumor.

Adrenal neoplasm is a rare cause of Budd-Chiari syndrome. We report a case of fulminant acute Budd-Chiari syndrome due to inferior vena cava thrombosis stemming from invasion by a clinically nonfunctioning adrenal neoplasm. We also review briefly the clinical characteristics of the seven previously reported cases.

Primary mediastinal neoplasms (other than thymoma).

Primary mediastinal neoplasms encompass a long list of histologically diverse lesions that can arise from a wide variety of mediastinal structures. Recent advances in diagnostic techniques have considerably enhanced the evaluation of the mediastinum with use of noninvasive or minimally invasive procedures. In adults, most primary mediastinal neoplasms can be classified in one of four categories: thymus-derived neoplasms, neurogenic tumors, lymphomas, or germ cell neoplasms. In children, neurogenic tumors (especially neuroblastomas) and lymphomas are most frequently encountered. Because of the

Transrectal ultrasound of rectal tumors.

Since preoperative staging of rectal tumors is important in planning treatment, we evaluated transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) staging of rectal neoplasms. In 35 consecutive rectal tumors, we compared TRUS staging results with final pathologic staging. TRUS predicted the degree of tumor invasion in 19 of 24 patients (79%) and the presence or absence of lymph node metastasis in 11 of 15 patients (73%). TRUS overestimated the degree of tumor invasion in four patients (17%) and underestimated invasion in one patient (4%). The depth of tumor invasion was correctly predicted in all 14 tumors located wi

Utility of 18F-FDG-PET/CT in patients suspected of paraneoplastic neurological syndrome: importance of risk classification.

PURPOSE: To assess the diagnostic impact of 18F-FDG-PET/CT in patients suspected of paraneoplastic neurological syndrome (PNS) based on our own pre-test risk classification (PRC). METHODS: A multicenter retrospective longitudinal study was conducted from 2006 to 2014. We designed a seven-point scoring system using the clinical syndrome characteristics [classical (CS) and non-classical syndromes (NCS)] and its location (central, peripheral, in the neuromuscular junction or combined), onconeural antibodies and tumor markers. Patients were classified as low (score 0-2), intermediate (3-4) and hi

A case report of malignant melanoma of the great toe.

UNLABELLED: Melanoma is reported as the most common malignant neoplasm of the foot and carries with it a very poor prognosis. This neoplasm arises from melanocytes, which are pigment-producing cells found predominantly in the skin, and the malignancy can metastasize to any organ system. Early and accurate diagnosis and treatment are paramount components of a successful course of management, and improve the rate of survival for those affected by this aggressive cutaneous neoplasm. In this report, we describe an invasive case of melanoma of the hallux that was misdiagnosed as a chronic ingrown a

Encapsulated papillary neoplasms of the thyroid. A study of 14 cases followed for a minimum of 10 years.

Fourteen cases of encapsulated papillary thyroid neoplasm in which extracapsular extension was not observed and a minimum of 10 years follow-up was available are herein presented. The cases were divided into three categories: encapsulated papillary carcinomas (five cases), which had cytologic features typical of papillary thyroid carcinoma (vesicular or indented nuclei) and an entirely or predominantly thick capsule with capsular invasion; encapsulated papillary neoplasms of undetermined malignancy (seven cases), in which the cytologic features were also typical of papillary carcinoma but the

Mucinous adenocarcinoma of minor salivary gland with IPMN-like features.

This salivary mucinous adenocarcinoma with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm-like features demonstrates regional lymph node metastases and GNAS amplification. The findings suggest these lesions represent low-grade invasive mucinous neoplasms with secondary ductal extension rather than purely intraductal entities, supporting their classification within the mucinous adenocarcinoma spectrum.

European experts consensus statement on cystic tumours of the pancreas.

Cystic lesions of the pancreas are increasingly recognized. While some lesions show benign behaviour (serous cystic neoplasm), others have an unequivocal malignant potential (mucinous cystic neoplasm, branch- and main duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm and solid pseudo-papillary neoplasm). European expert pancreatologists provide updated recommendations: diagnostic computerized tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging are indicated in all patients with cystic lesion of the pancreas. Endoscopic ultrasound with cyst fluid analysis may be used but there is no evidence to suggest thi

Benign Biliary Tumors and Precursor Neoplasms: An Updated Clinicopathological and Molecular Review Based on the 2026 WHO Classification.

Benign biliary tumors and precursor neoplasms of the biliary tract are a heterogeneous group of uncommon neoplasms with significant clinical and diagnostic implications. Their importance lies in their variable malignant potential and morphological and molecular similarities to pancreatic neoplasms. The sixth edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Digestive System Tumours (WHO DST6), published online in 2026, introduced major revisions to the classification of these entities. According to WHO DST6, benign tumors and precursor neoplasms of the liver and intrahepatic bile duct

Primary mediastinal tumors. Part 1: tumors of the anterior mediastinum.

Primary anterior mediastinal neoplasms comprise a diverse group of tumors and account for 50% of all mediastinal masses. Thymomas are most common and can be locally invasive and associated with parathymic syndromes. Thymic carcinomas and thymic carcinoids are rare malignancies with a propensity for local invasion and distant metastases. Thymolipomas are benign thymic tumors. The mediastinal germ cell tumors are a heterogeneous group of benign and malignant neoplasms. Mediastinal lymphangiomas are rare tumors and predominantly occur in young children. In contrast, mediastinal goiters are relati

Central Depression among Pretreatment Endoscopic Features is Associated with Submucosal Invasion in Gastric Fundic Gland-Type Tumors.

INTRODUCTION: Fundic gland-type neoplasms show a relatively high frequency of submucosal (SM) invasion despite their small size and low-grade biological behavior. Reliable pretreatment endoscopic predictors of SM invasion, however, remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the association between pretreatment endoscopic features and SM invasion, focusing on central depression. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included fundic gland-type neoplasms treated by endoscopic SM dissection between January 2010 and August 2024. Only pretreatment endoscopic images obtained before biops

Expression of p150 in cervical neoplasia and its potential value in predicting survival.

BACKGROUND: A recently cloned novel p150 protein was found to be overexpressed in human breast carcinoma. To the authors' knowledge, no data on p150 expression in any other human tumors have been published previously. METHODS: To investigate whether the expression of p150 correlated with the clinicopathologic stages of cervical neoplasms or the prognoses of patients with these neoplasms, the authors conducted an immunohistochemical study of archival formalin fixed, paraffin embedded specimens. Seventy-two precancerous lesions (CIN), 75 clinical Stage IB invasive squamous carcinomas, and 20 sa

Decreased expression of epidermal growth factor and its receptor in the malignant transformation of trophoblasts.

BACKGROUND: Gestational trophoblastic neoplasms comprise the neoplastic spectrum of nonmalignant hydatidiform mole, invasive hydatidiform mole, and truly malignant choriocarcinoma. Increasing evidence indicates that epidermal growth factor (EGF) acts as an enhancer of trophoblast function to produce human chorionic gonadotropin and that EGF and its receptor may provide a growth advantage to certain carcinoma cells. The current study was undertaken to evaluate a possible link between malignant transformation of trophoblast and expression of EGF and EGF receptor. METHODS: Cytologic localization

Intraductal oncocytic papillary neoplasm of the pancreas: a radio-pathological case study.

CONTEXT: An intraductal oncocytic papillary neoplasm is a rare pancreatic tumor with the potential of developing invasive carcinoma. Its differentiation from other cystic-like neoplasms of the pancreas, such as intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms, is a challenge for pancreatic imaging. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 76-year-old male with painless jaundice caused by an intraductal oncocytic papillary neoplasm of the pancreas. The imaging findings on computed tomography, magnetic resonance including diffusion-weighted imaging, and (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomograph

Update on the pathology and genetics of exocrine pancreatic tumors with ductal phenotype: precursor lesions and new tumor entities.

The majority of pancreatic neoplasms show a ductal phenotype and can be classified as ductal adenocarcinomas. Pancreatic duct lesions have been discussed as tumor precursors. This review presents a recently adopted standard system for these lesions which distinguishes among three grades of pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN). Molecular studies revealed that PanIN-2 and PanIN-3 lesions represent a distinct step towards invasive carcinoma. Another focus of the review is the advances that have been made in the further immunohistochemical and molecular characterization of special pancreat

Two-photon polymerization of miniaturized 3D scaffolds optimized for studies on glioblastoma multiforme in spaceflight-like microgravity conditions.

The obtainment of innovative models recalling complex tumour architectures and activitiesin vitrois a challenging drive in the understanding of pathology molecular bases, yet it is a crucial path to the identification of targets for advanced oncotherapy. Cell environment recapitulation by 3D scaffolding and gravitational unloading of cell cultures represent powerful means in tumour biomimicry processes, but their simultaneous adoption has consistently been explored only in the latest decade. Here, an unprecedented bioengineering approach capitalizing on spaceflight biology practice is proposed
