Intussusception secondary to metastatic sarcoma is an unusual cause of small bowel obstruction. When a patient who has no history of a previous laparotomy, and has a known malignancy which metastasized hematogenously, presents with small bowel obstruction, the diagnosis of intussusception should be considered. The patient should be evaluated and treated accordingly.

Fibro-osseous pseudotumors of the digits (FOPD) is a rare self-limiting lesion composed of bland looking hypercellular fibrous tissue and bone. USP6 rearrangement is a consistent genetic finding in aneurysmal bone cyst, nodular fasciitis, myositis ossificans and giant cell lesions of small bones. We report herein the occurrence of USP6 rearrangement in fibro-osseous pseudotumors of the digits using fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis (FISH). Of the five patients included, three were female and two were male. The age ranged from 33 to 72 years (mean 48 years). Lesions arose in the palm

Lipomatous tumors of the uterus are rare neoplasms which can be divided into three broad groups - pure, mixed, and the exceedingly rare malignant liposarcoma. Lipoleiomyoma is a rare benign variant of leiomyoma with an incidence ranging between 0.03% and 0.2%. These tumors are usually seen in obese postmenopausal women and are usually asymptomatic but may also present with typical leiomyoma symptoms. The most common site of occurrence is the uterine corpus. Imaging plays an important role with magnetic resonance imaging being the modality of choice as it delineates the fat component better. Th

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon tumor initially reported in the pleura but recently described in other sites of the body. We report a SFT of the skin that presented as painless nodule located in the right cheek in a 56-year-old woman. Histologically, the tumor was composed of spindle-shaped cells arranged in a patternless pattern of short and narrow fascicles with interspersed bundles of thick collagen, and numerous blood vessels with a focally hemangiopericytoma-like appearance. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells strongly expressed vimentin, CD34 and bcl-2. The lesion was exci

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy is a rare soft tissue lesion of infants and young children with characteristic triphasic morphology, which typically occurs in the axilla and less commonly in other locations. We reviewed 145 cases of fibrous hamartoma of infancy from our consultation archives. Cases occurred in 106 males and 39 females (mean age-15 months; range-birth to 14 years), and involved both typical sites (eg, axilla/back/upper arm) (n=69) and unusual locations (n=76). Six were congenital. The tumors presented as subcutaneous masses and ranged from 0.4 to 17 cm (mean 3 cm). All displayed t

Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma is a soft tissue neoplasm of low malignant potential, typically occurring in the superficial soft tissues of the extremities in children and young adults. Occurrence outside somatic soft tissues is most uncommon. This report describes eight such cases, involving the lung (three cases), mediastinum (one case), vulva (two cases), retroperitoneum (one case) and ovary (one case), with the latter three locations being hitherto unreported sites of occurrence. Patients had a median age of 48 years, and presented with symptoms related to the mass lesion (five cases) or

Lipomas are mesenchymal neoplasms relatively uncommon in the oral cavity. Lipomas can exhibit histopathological features mimicking atypical lipomatous tumors (ALT) or dysplastic lipoma (DL) in the presence of degenerative changes. Relevantly, immunohistochemistry assists in the correct diagnosis. Herein, we present the case of a 54-year-old male with a sessile nodule located on the dorsum of the tongue. The histopathological analysis showed a diffuse, non-circumscribed adipocytic proliferation constituted by cells of variable size containing cytoplasmic vacuoles and displaced nuclei, some rese

Ectopic pleural thymoma is an exceedingly uncommon clinical entity that has only been described sporadically. Because of their peculiar location and variety of histologic patterns manifested, pleural thymomas may be confused with other neoplasms and may cause diagnostic problems clinically, radiologically, and morphologically. We describe the case of a giant left-sided ectopic pleural thymoma, preoperatively suspected to be a solitary fibrous tumor. A complete surgical resection was achieved and a postoperative diagnosis of WHO Type AB, modified Masaoka stage I tumor was attained. Subsequent t

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) and myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) are genomically complex tumors commonly diagnosed in the extremities or trunk of elderly patients. They likely represent a spectrum of disease differentiated by myxoid stroma and curvilinear vessels observed in MFS but not in UPS. Limb-sparing surgery is the standard of care although the infiltrative nature of MFS mandates wider resection margins than are necessary for UPS. UPS are conversely associated with high risks of distal recurrence, often prompting recommendations for adjuvant chemotherapy. In both histologies, anthr

BackgroundLow-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is an uncommon malignant fibroblastic neoplasm characterized by deceptively bland histology and risk of late recurrence and metastasis. Primary pulmonary LGFMS is rare, with fewer than a dozen reported patients. Because the lung is also the most frequent metastatic site for soft-tissue LGFMS, distinguishing a primary pulmonary tumor from metastatic disease requires careful clinicopathologic correlation.Patient PresentationWe report a 70-year-old woman with a slowly enlarging right lower lobe pulmonary mass on imaging during a 2-year interval. The authors report a case of Mazabraud's syndrome in a patient aged 57 years with a history of fibrous dysplasia of the skeletal system which had commenced at the age of 10. This became associated with myxomas of the soft tissues at the age of 42. This rare association was described by Mazabraud in 1957. A review of the literature up to 1985 shows that 16 cases have been reported. These are reviewed.

Atypical lipomatous tumor/well-differentiated liposarcoma is a locally aggressive mesenchymal neoplasm composed of adipocytes and stromal cells. Gastric cases are exceedingly rare, and their malignant potential remains unclear. We report a case of a woman in her 60s who was found to have multiple submucosal tumor-like lesions of the stomach. Over time, the tumors increased in size, requiring a laparoscopic partial gastrectomy. Histological examination revealed a tumor composed of both fatty tissue and fibrous stroma with nuclear atypia. Immunohistochemistry showed positivity for CDK4 and MDM2,

Mesenteric fibromatosis (MF) is a rare benign mesenchymal lesion that can occur throughout the gastrointestinal tract, especially small bowel. Its biological behavior is intermediate between benign fibrous tissue proliferation and malignant fibrosarcoma. In previously reported cases of MF, we could find colonic obstruction or ureter obstruction, but simultaneous involvement of colon and ureter was not able to be seen. We described a patient that presented with colonic obstruction and hydroureteronephrosis due to MF at sigmoid colon which mimicked submucosal tumor such as gastrointestinal tumor

Leiomyoma is a relatively uncommon neoplasm of the epididymis derived from smooth muscle cells. A case of primary leiomyomas simultaneously occurring in both epididymides is reported in a 58-year-old man, clinically presenting painless intra-scrotal masses. The examination of the epididymis characterizes clinically by a firm solid, well-circumscribe mass, and histological spindle cells arranged in interlacing bundles with varying admixtures of fibrous and hyalinized connective tissue. Clinical, histopathologic and immunohistopathologic features, with briefly reviewed relevant literatures descr

A yearling Arabian filly was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with a history of weight loss, profound anemia, and peritoneal effusion. At necropsy, a large, soft, mottled tan and red neoplastic mass was at the pelvic inlet replacing the left ovary. Additional tumor nodules of various sizes were disseminated throughout the mesentery, diaphragm, and serosal surfaces of the abdominal viscera. Histologically, the neoplasm had sheets of large round to polygonal cells separated into lobules by fibrous connective tissue with multifocal areas of necrosis. Tumor cells stained strong

Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of uncertain cell lineage with indeterminate behavior, hallmarked by EWSR1 translocations. This tumor typically arises in the subcutaneous or deep soft tissues and is composed of bland to mildly atypical histiocytoid cells with frequent intralesional hemorrhagic pseudocystic spaces. It affects both children and adults, without a significant sex predilection. Histologically, the tumor may be mistaken for a lymph node given the apparent predilection for node-bearing sites as well as the brisk lymphoid cuff featuring germinal centers

Calcifying fibrous tumour of the pleura (CFTP) is a rare, benign soft tissue neoplasm with uncertain aetiology. To our knowledge, only 36 cases (including this case) have been reported in English literature. A man in his early 30s presented with an incidental pleural lesion identified following investigation for a persistent cough. Imaging revealed left pleural thickening with calcification, raising concern for a possible malignant pleural process. CT-guided biopsy demonstrated fibrosis without malignancy, and a video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery excision was performed. Histopathology confir

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare type of mesenchymal neoplasm that first was discovered in the pleura but can also affect the peritoneum, lungs, mediastinum, and skin. Cutaneous malignant SFT is an extremely rare tumor that resembles dermatofibrosacoma protuberance (DFSP) histologically and immunohistochemically. Herein, we describe a case of malignant SFT that presented as a recurrent mass on the scalp. The first lesion was totally excised one year before recurrence and was diagnosed as a DFSP based on the histopathology and cluster of differentiation 34 immunostaining positivity. Re-ex

RATIONALE: Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a rare benign soft tissue mesenchymal neoplasm. Although the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is the most common predilection site of CFT, the clinicians, even including pathologist, generally consider it as GI stromal tumor (GIST) or other submucosal tumors such as schwannoma and leiomyoma.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 55-year-old man presented with complaints of epigastric discomfort and abdominal distention for more than 1 year.
DIAGNOSES: On the basis of endoscopic and computed tomography examination, preliminary diagnosis was GIST.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a soft-tissue sarcoma originating from fibroblast cells, characterized by a high rate of metastasis or recurrence. With only 4 cases described in the available English literature up to now, gastric metastasis of MFH is extremely rare. Among them only one case has been reported to lead to gastrointestinal bleeding. We report the case of a 55-year-old woman who underwent total gastrectomy, 14 months after resection of an MFH from the right side of retroperitoneum. The neoplasm was detected at the time of diagnostic workup for upper gastrointestinal bleedin
